Facts About Beagle Dogs 101-All You Need to Know

  • The American Kennel Club categorizes the beagle as a hound. Not many people are aware of what hounds are and what exactly they were bred to do. Hounds are really hunting dogs, and they may struggle at times to adapt to living in a domestic setting. Sure, they love to eat food and sleep on cozy beds, but they still have a strong desire for doing what they were bred for: tracking scent.

We have three beagles. I saw your video and couldn't resist watching it. We love the little guys, we've had them about ten years, but everything you said about them is spot on. I struggle to keep my wife from over treating them. One beagle became quite fat and we put her on expensive diet food (metabolic diet food) from the vet. Then I started rationing her food to 1/2 cup science diet morning and evening and she looks really healthy now. One time I let one of them off the leash while walking through fields. She ran about 200 yards away from me. I called her name and she stopped for a few seconds and looked at me, then turned back around and continued following her nose, just like you said. I have often had to climb over farmers gates and fences to retrieve one of my beagles and one time had to run part way up a mountain (Utah) so they only get off leash at the dog park now. My wife wanted to let the beagles sleep in our bed but I put my foot down. Two she-beagles sleep in our bedroom on a dog bed inside a plastic walled mini-corral. Or other he-beagle sleeps on a dog bed in the living room. Sometimes we feel like tearing out hair out after they get into garbage cans or pull food down from the counter followed by a three-dog feeding frenzy. But just like you said, you can't stay mad at them very long, they're just too lovable. And I love the smell. It's just a beagle smell. People on the river trail have told me I must spend a lot of time grooming the beagles, I replied that I spend no time at all grooming the beagles, so the wash and wear comment is true! Great video!

Little known fact: Beagles have large ears for finding scents, they waft scents to the nose rather than for hearing. Which explains why those big ears don't really help when you're yelling "STOP! COME BACK!"

I am making my yard into a jail due to the fact I live in the woods with bunnies and when my beagle escapes from his chain It means hours of tracking him and trying to catch him. I am running out of tricks to catch him because the same trick never works twice. They are VERY smart dogs and will find the weak link to any system. Of course after I catch him it means snuggles and puppy kisses so I can't complain too much.

We have one beagle, the nose on four legs is very accurate. Everytime we go out for walks he doesn't wanna go potty. His nose is always on the ground not even paying attention to what's in front of him.
All of these facts are so true about the beagles, especially their pleading eyes when they see you eat or about to throw food away. Ours would sit in a corner with those eyes just waiting knowing we will somehow give in. That's why we always take him out for a walk so that he won't go fat.

Beagles are great dogs who are loving and intelligent.. My Dad loved his Beagle until he passed on. He used to howl like a seal screaming so they're not suitable for apartment living . My Dad's Beagle used to run up the mountain when he followed a scent and would come back hours later, so we had to be careful when we opened up our garage door so he wouldn't Escape! They're not very tolerant of young kids. I would recommend them but definitely find out if they're suitable for your household.

My beagle, Peaches really didn't have a smell either. At least not an offensive one. My son and I would bathe her. And lather her up real good with Pantene Pro-V shampoo and conditioner. @zadoknelson6046 Před 3 lety

@erozpl01 It makes them smell sooo good! You know you have an awesome dog when you can compare them to an air freshener! And the Pantene conditioner makes a beagles fur exceedingly soft. If your beagle is a bit portly, you'll have a super-soft fur-ball friend with the aroma of an awesome air freshener that lasts a serious 3-4 days! Lol! I'm not even kidding. Then you just repeat the bathing process, and your beagle will stay in the cycle of super-soft fur-ball friend with the aroma of an awesome air freshener. Perpetually. No pun intended, believe it or not. Just be patient enough to get them completely dry. Even a smell good beagle, doesn't smell good while wet.

Thank You Very Much for this CZcams vlog which is very informative & helpful to future Beagle owners. My bestie has 3 wonderful Beagles named Jackson (7yo Male rehomed), Barley (3yo Male adopted) & Hokie (approximately 6yo Female & rescued from Envigo Breeding Facilty, Cumberland VA). All 3 pooches bring him joy, comfort & companionship after a 12-hour hard day's work shift. Jackson is the smarty pants in the pack, loves to dig holes for "escape routes" & hates other dogs but Loves humans; Barley is the athletic one who has "Balleyetis condition" - constantly playing with balls which he loves to chew on & destroy! Hokie, on the other hand is a very sweet & cuddly Mama doggie whom Envigo used solely for breeding. She was born & raised most of her adult life in a kennel & therefore was not house-broken, socialized with other dogs nor taken for walks outside esp. on grassy areas. She always poops & piss inside the house after her 2-mile walk although she's learned to mark her territory along the route when we take her for a stroll. Guess we'll have to keep the training pads forever! Has anyone rescued an Envigo Beagle? If so, then how did you tackle the "house/potty" training?

That little look back at you and not come when they're called is so true and drives me nuts still. Ive been able to change my expectations of her and now I patiently wait for her to decide to come. She's always the last to come to the house when I call mine in. Im not mad at her now since I now know that she really cant help it, it's her nature. Love my little girl. In not sure your nationality and therby the accent you carry over into English speaking; however, i do admire your appeal to humor and personification of the "beagle experience."
I feel you and i could likely be friends with the place your imagination and humor is being drawn from.
I think youre cute in that regard. May i come over and cuddle on your beagle? Lol.

Jokes on you! When we go for a walk, I don’t call them by their names, I just say “wanna a treat?”
Excessive shedding and odor are not normal in beagles. Ask your vet, it might be a skin problem. One of my doggies smelled really bad even after 3-4 days after a bath, he got a treatment with a special fish oil and he sheds very little now and he can even go a whole month with no baths and he doesn’t smell bad at all.

My Beagle from my youth would only respond to one thing if he escaped: You calling out names of various foods/snacks/treats.
Then he'd return home faster than you could possibly imagine and of course expect said food, snacks & treats.

It's so cute that your beagle's recall consisted of the names of snacks! Yes we did mention the fact that beagles are chow hounds. It's one of one the most "beaglish traits!" At minute 3.54 "beagles act like they are starving when they just ate 15 minutes ago, with their pleading eyes asking for food as if on the brink of extinction. Dog owners cannot resist doling out foods, just to "save them" minute 5;34 "there are obese beagles , when owner have table scraps the beagle strategically places himself next to the trash as if saying "why not feed me instead of the trash can." when not stealing food from the countertop of raiding the trash can, beagles are feasting on rabbit poop in the yard. They are a handful. Be aware that they will ignore you or even walk away when you call them. Its maddening. I used to get so upset with my girl. She'd just look at me when I called her and sometimes would look me in the face as she walked off in another direction. Arrrggggg!! It was very hard to adapt to that beagle mentality for a while. I finally accepted that that is just her nature. Now I just laugh (most of the time) when she ignores me at first. THEY ARE STUBBORN AS HELL. Love her to death though. She has helped one of my abused dogs come out of its shell and PLAY! That made me cry to see my scared girl play with her new beagle sister! They love each other.

    "Gaping throat"
Ill be honest most dogs make ZERO noise from the domestic enviornments ive seen. I am 28 and ive patiently waited out having a dog. I live on a legitimate farm and while theres already a bunch of animals i dont personally have one. It affects my quality of life and community because my mates are a couple and im a third wheel to everything taking place.
I know that having a dog and defining our relationship on my shoulders instead of fitting a "square peg in round hole" trying tirelessly for attention. consistenty, and affection
Im 28, male, single. My heart is more readily open to provide maintenance of care and high quality of care to a canine vs a female. Not comparing value and slandering the greater woman i know exists. Ive just seen the darkside of that coin too many times and placed WAY too much confidences in actually being treated decently.
You said it best, "There are no stupid beagles" just like for example "there are no stupid people" and yes as far as learning patience and TRULY caring for a dissimilar entity i feel like id be personally touched and rather content to "go beagling." Id feel implored and honored to be his/her lil buddy. Im sure he/she would save my heart from breaking completely.
    Cheers. Darby laurel oregon

Beagle sounds like a overly dramatic motivated dog with a Quest! lmfao.. they are great to have if you live on the outskirt of a city and an avid hunter.. yard big enough for them to roam and exercise.
