To craft the mask for the Zoidberg Project, effects artist Frank Ippolito has to first make a realistic duplicate of a head to sculpt on. This is done through a process called lifecasting, in which Frank covers Norm's head with silicone to make a perfect mold. That mold is then filled with plaster to create Norm's creepy double.

Norm looks weird enough without glasses, and then you made him bald.
I think this is the longest Norm has ever shut up. Willingly or otherwise
XD
.........came here for this comment.......thank you
Neon Green hair... My goodness that's stunning
Complimentary with the silicon color ;)
That girl's green hair was cool! Usually, that color doesn't do well, but she got it right. Good for her
This is my favorite video with Norm.. dunno why...
probably because he's not talking as much LOL
maybe :D :D
MachineFight i was about to make the exact same comment lol
Fuck. That cast is amazing. It had a crazy amount of detail.
Nice detail on the molding. Zits and everything, way he said "every single pore" @ 16:25
Very cool! This is the stuff they haven't shown us on "Face/Off". It's fascinating to see how those casts are made in the first place.
I love how Will is standing in the back with a giant cut in his head doing commentary. Great video guys!
"So what are lifecasts used for?"
After he just explained it's so the make up is made specifically for the person wearing it 10 seconds earlier...
He mentioned washing a car from the top down. I used to work a place detailing cars all by myself. It seems counter intuitive but I learned if you're gonna wash the whole thing in one sitting. That if you go from the bottom up, your soap won't bleed down and cover up spots you've not cleaned yet. So, you can get everywhere in one go. Not having to rely on drying or a second pass to get it completely clean. This wasn't always useful and sometimes the car would be so small that it wouldn't matter, etc. If you're washing a large SUV that's pretty dirty try it. You have to rinse it in the same way you wash it so the water isn't covering up your progress, I know people will say, "You're letting dirty water from the top run down the side over the parts you just cleaned!" Once the dirt particulate is loose then it doesn't adhere to the car again. Especially if you're continually rinsing it. Just a bit of experience that might help someone.
Well done Norm tolerating the process. You are a true professional sir.
All those smooth-on containers, I can't image how much money is wrapped up in that studio. XD
Welcome to the world, Norm 2.0!
Very cool and detailed video of the whole process of life casting someone!
This seems terrifying for mouth breathers...
I have sinus issues that keep me from being able to breathe out of my nose comfortably... this would be brutal.
True
I was thinking the same thing. I have a cleft pallet so my noise doesnt work that good.
That's why you can now get your head 3D scanned and have the mold 3D printed. Without having to be stuck inside silicone and plaster.
@@themikatoon It's still not really nearly as realistic. It won't have all the pores.
Could put straws in your mouth maybe. Kind of annoying but it would work
I hope this isn't expensive. It would be cool to have one made every 10 years of my life.
Great idea!
That green hair
my first thought as well. looks incredible!!!
Im really enjoying this project, i love that Norm got full head casted xD
that would be so fun to do someday :D
i love her bright green hair in the background, it's so pretty, perfect shade, and shine for the color. ^^ ♥
that was really really cool! also - love the assistant's full commitment to green hair. woo! nice. :D can hardly wait for the next phase.
Every special effects makeup studio is run by creepy out of shape men with young neon haired / tattooed female assistants.
Thank you ! Thanks to this video I finally know how to efficiently get rid of all the water trapped in my plaster bandages !
that haircolor is AWESOME!
This was so awesome, I loved watching Frank on Face off!
Way to go tested and frank. Also norm, nice job sticking it out, looks like it was worth it!
Mummifying a member of the blue man group.
im dong an art project at the moment and found this really useful for tips, thanks tested
and by dong i mean doing
Loving the Atlas Shrugged tshirt that he is wearing, though I'm more of a Rearden Steel fan...
God, is really really detailed, amazing work o:!
Man that is awesome.
That was awesome.
I've had a life cast done just my face but it is more comfortable than you think. And we use alginate instead of silicon because it's only a temporary mold.
hello and thank you for your gorgeous video !! do you have the part 3 where you make the zoidberg modeling AND the making of the silicone mask?
thanks again... this video is unpayable worthful for me !!
We're learning lifecasting in my special fx class tomorrow! Super excited to do it, but not to get it done on me lolll
Those two look like they really enjoy their job! Haha what a cool thing.
Cool looking hair.
The plaster head reminds me of that one Rammstein album
I should've watched this before embarking on my latest experiment. That wet paper towel trick would've saved me a lot of time.
Frank's T-shirt is just amazing
Love this video for two reasons, Number 1 it is really descriptive and helps me when I'll hopefully be able to life cast properly in my sfx career, and Number 2 this is the only video where Norm has stayed quiet and it makes me happy, he's so bloody annoying when he comments on things that Frank is already doing
So I know that the alginate casts do not last very long before having to cast in plaster or resin or whatever before they deteriorate...how long do the silicone molds last? I'm guessing they have a longer lifespan. Or is it more of a limit of how many new casts can be pulled from the silicone mold before deterioration from the recasting?
Long shot ask in the hopes of an answer from one of the peeps in the video.
The ladys hair colour is intense and so vivid, any chance I could find the brand and colour of that dye please?
frank needs his own channel
Lifecasts just look so stoic don't they? Norm's a pretty typically nerdy looking guy, but his plaster head has all the decorum and fortitude (and about as much hair) as a Buddhist monk.
I wonder how many pints of Body Double was used for a lifecast this size. Obviously dependant on the size of the person but would be a good gauge knowing how much was used here. Or maybe I missed it at some point in the vid :/
THAT GREEN HAIR
how many lbs are typically needed to cover a head.. this is the one thing I can't figure out lol.
How much of the stuff do you have on his head? How much should i buy to do it once, and does it expire while sitting in its can?
I'm pretty much in love with the assistant.
I'm interested in making a headcast for myself, what would i do about the baldcap? I have hair thats really long and thick.
2 questions
1. Could you use resin instead of resin?
2. What would you need to do if you wanted the casting to be hollow?
Super interesting stuff.
there's some casts of adam's head on an old ep of mythbusters. the struck by lightning one. that one had its mouth open in a scream. how was that made? was the mouth altered after the first casting?
Also, what do you do for people with longer hair.. ? Do you do the hole pony tail thing or do you wrap the hair around the head and put the bald cap on?
So cool!
Nora should make guest appearances as often as possible, please and thank you.
at 5:06 norm looks like princess Leia haha
AM_ Productions thank you so much!
Brass Brook hahahaha
Awesome!
Funny about the sticking you hand in plaster story. A guy in my Makeup class at the Art Institute did that . He filled a 2 Liter soda bottle with Ultracal 30 and put his fist down into it. Needless to say, for anyone who has worked with Ultracal, it started to burn his hand and arm. We got chisels and mallets and did an emergency rescue ha ha. Not sure how he thought he was going to get his hand out anyway once it cured.
well done Norm!
about the breathing, cut 10cm piece of 5mm diameter drinking straw and heat the ends with lighter until the edge curls into ball shape, then it will be safe to put it in your nose, it will not cut you even if you bump it. what about the eyebrows and eyelashes, is there any way to protect them better?
More Nora on Tested Please!!!!
agreed
Agreed.
it took me a long time to realise he had a gun wound in his head
Nah, just a really bad case of acne. :/

@tested is there a product list you could provide of all the products used in this video?
Hey there, question for you! Do you need to cut the back with scissors? Can't you just pull the silicon off like a shirt or it won't work that way?
Because I'm planning to do this soon!
Oh and nice job of yours!
^_^
Can someone list all the products used during this process. I'd like to experiment at home. Thanks!
Norm, respect! Around 7:30-8:00 You actually look like statue while around you, they're discussing everything that could go wrong, pretty brave!
can you use pam cooking spray as a release on a persons full bust (spay them in the face)instead of petroleum jelly? I saw a video on using it as a seam release and it got me interested. Also where can I find links for purchasing silicone casting kits?
I'm researching different ways before I try it for the first time
i know plaster cant touch skin but is it the same for plaster bandages? can they go directly to skin or is it better to silicone first?
I've done the hand in plaster! It got a little warm, made my hand red. It was a little hard to remove my hand but I covered it in vaseline. I didnt do it to my wrist so I could remove it. Did I get lucky?
How much body double silicone does something like this take? Would I be ok getting the 400ml set or should I go with the gallon?
What is the name of the solvent that he used in 02.06???
wow, Norms really being tested. But I guess it's better than a lion's den where you'll be "tasted"
i have had a lifecast made of my head before it actualy is very relaxing
dang! that chick's hair is bang'en!
that picture makes that the best comment ive seen this year!
"Norah" (I assume that's really her name, no clue why I put it in quotes) was definitely my favorite part of this video.
James Dreger twitter.com/norastarrr
I LOVE that girls hair! Soo cool
Seriously, TESTED, Frank needs his own videos. This is infinitely more interesting than anything I've seen on FACE/OFF. And unlike that show, I actually LEARNED how to do what I watched. Face/off is like a lame cooking contest show, where you think you picked up techniques and ideas, but really learned nothing. We need more videos like this.
Norm with nothing to say, imagine that.
Does anyone know more about the T-shirt that guy is wearing? It looks like the Silence from Doctor Who, its a pretty neat shirt.
Norm was in this video? Sorry I couldnt keep my eyes of Nora! Shes lovely.
Captain America makes an appearance at 6:09
Yo Daddy lol
Hello. Can u answer please, what u adding in part A in 2.40. Thank you.
I have a torso piece of armor I made of foam, what materials would i use to do this for that?
how do you put long hair in a bald cap? if your working with someone with long hair?
Can anyone tell me what thickening agent they use? I can't find it on smooth ons website.
Love watching professionals work, all about a set system done in a specific order and with a technique you only gain from countless trial and error. Onya Frank you are a master in your field... And you have good taste regarding your assistant choice (not only cute but skilled and able), makes the workshop a better place and never hurts to have some eye candy about. Keep on Testing
15:30 "It's like Norm but backwards" xD
That green hair.. I love it
What was the additive for making it easier to work with facial hair called?
Could you tell us what brand of bald cap? and that cap-solvent your using? Also where do you buy a large quantity of smooth-on?
camazotzz The description says Smooth-on provided materials.
I find it a little annoying how no one is able to specify an approxiate number of plaster rolls needed for the average head. There must be some kind of standard. Like "it usually takes 7 rolls". I've seen people say that 2 doses of the Smooth-On stuff is usually enough, but they never seem to talk about the plaster.
how much body double did they use ?
Her hair is bad ass
*Badass
Very old video, but what would be used to make a master mould?
She's gorgeous ;ooo love the medusa and snake bite lip piercings ;o
Very much like special effects makeup, you can tell me where I can buy the material that I am a Chinese person in China can buy the material it? Where can I learn special effects makeup. I am using translation software translation of these words, if there is an error, please forgive me
And what plaster do you pour in to the mold?
Where did the plastic on his ear go because I would like to make one?
i would love to have that job
Why does everyone hate my boy Norm?
Because he's annoying af...
