    Race indoor, rip some fast times and get used to competing/racing earlier so when outdoor comes along you are already familar with racing on a track and from there it's all about getting specific race stuff in.
    Best of Luck!!!
    Either way it will be fun to watch your journey this coming year.

    Big question for me would be - what will make you, as an individual, stronger at the 1500 come the outdoor season? Do you get stronger off the long stuff or the short stuff, and what will get you the most gains? That would be my way of assessing the winter plan.
    Look at Jake and Josh over the 2021 and 2022 winters respectively - Jake did some 3000 work because he needed that strength, and did a bit of sprint technique work; Josh did a half marathon (amongst other things).
    You know you best - chat with Nick, see if you’re both on the same page… and smash it

    I'm in no position to give elite athletes advice but (my tuppenceworth) after the 'buzz' of Riga I think there is the temptation to both overthink and over train. Indoors sound good as they are both fun and great tactical race sharpeners.

    Back in the day, when I used to be half decent, I'd do a very short xc season, hit indoors Feb/March then grind out the training again before starting the outdoor track season in May. Only you know can decide what will work for you. I think you'd have a decent shout of making the World Indoor team if you gave it a good crack

    Not just commenting for the algorithm... If you're contemplating x country, why not come along to Wimpole parkrun one Saturday and have a crack at the course record? It might be wet often during winter, but nowhere near as boggy as the end of that Mansfield course. That looked horrendous!

    Liverpool short course, Euro xc relay, indoors including BU Valentine (finish indoors end of Feb) March back to strength work and mileage, April start to re-sharpen for track, May start outdoor track. Excited to see how things unfold, keep up the good work. No downside to going a bit faster provided you keep some of the base work through until the summer

  • @user-bg2ld2gi4u
    @user-bg2ld2gi4u Před 6 měsíci

    Simple for me, it’s all about the summer , do you need to be ‘fitter’ faster or improve speed endurance - long XC , can’t see how that would fit in. Look at what others like you have done. Cram and Coe were poor XC runners , Ovett could do anything . I would do some shorter (5 mile, 10k) road races. What is strength everyone talks about - it’s an illusion , all good XC runners have good VO2 max .
    May be a few 3k indoor for a change but just to see how you’re going

    • @the.distanceproject
      @the.distanceproject  Před 6 měsíci

      Every runner approaches things differently! Some 1500 runners no further than 5k… some do half marathons!

  • @stuartwalker6786
    @stuartwalker6786 Před 6 měsíci

    I think if you are looking at the Olympics and maximising your potential then you should (probably have) a coach that will outline a path that will allow that to happen. At your level, you can't afford not to tick all the boxes and making sure they're the correct boxes to make the goals happen

    • @the.distanceproject
      @the.distanceproject  Před 6 měsíci

      Me, my coach & my management all work together to work things out. Some athletes just do what they are told and take no interest in the "why", which is cool... but I like to be involved :)

    • @stuartwalker6786
      @stuartwalker6786 Před 6 měsíci

      @@the.distanceproject which makes sense as only you know you. I suppose the tricky part is dovetailing that with the micro-planning that is needed for the necessary marginal gains required at that very stratospheric level and the content creation (which don't stop because it's fantastic!, and although it may be a pain at times, is probably a great distraction technique, from a sport that can sometimes involve too much self reflection!) ......................But then again, maybe they do over-complicate things these days!...Alf Tupper always showed those toffs how to win and he fuelled himself on hard graft and Fish & Chips 🤣, Keep up the great work and content, among the best out there! 👍🦾🏃💙🤍

    • @the.distanceproject
      @the.distanceproject  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I don’g stop the watch, I press “lap” so I can see the distance/time/pace for that given lap (rep). It then keeps running during the rest so I can see how long until I need to start the next rep :)

    I, m an old guy so my views are very old school. Wouldn't even think about racing indoors, wouldn't bother with "short course" X Country races - what the hell are they? - but would have a full winter of training and racing 6-7 miles X Country. All the great coaches in running history - Ceruty, Lydiard, Igloi, Gerschler - stressed that winter is the time for strength work. Ceruuty called it "conditioning". Lydiard called it "aerobic conditioning" but it means the same thing.
    Run X Country until end of March, April and May speed up, race June onwards. Your winter training isn't all slow plodding so you are not going to get slower if you don't train or race at 800/1500 pace for 6 months. With a good solid winter behind you it should be possible to race pretty regularly from June onwards.

    • @the.distanceproject
      @the.distanceproject  Před 6 měsíci

      Starting to race from June onwards won't suffice when the Euro Outdoor champs STARTS on the 7th June... so they'll be picking that team in May! Schedules are so different from years gone by, but many of the same training principles remain - I hear you!

    My humble opinion would be your a "Miler" from a footballers background a anaerobic athlete. I race cross this side of Christmas short course. Then indoors which you look like you are built for and I think you would go well and make GB team. Also something else is when do you have to get the Olympic qualify time by its Olympic year you might as well go all in. I think you could do it. Never shy away from speed all year round you don't have to race 10k cross to keep the strength.

      @@the.distanceproject also, in my (pretty irrelevant) opinion, I think it would be beneficial to go with the 2nd option. ie long cross + some serious indoor races. There's enough time post indoors so that the summer build wouldn't be a rush, especially if you're looking at racing in Aug/Sept. Is there any potential for qualifying to world indoors? Not sure what the policy is, but I know Josh and Jake are both ducking it. Good luck with whatever you do and maybe see you at Telford 10k.
