    Really didn't like the call from GB to switch the order mid race for the mixed relay. Make the call beforehand, then stick to it, regardless of how the race is going. Obviously it made the last leg more interesting as a viewer, but I think it's pretty cut and dry now that you should bookend a mixed relay with your fastest runners.

    You’ve had so much success this year Callum, everyone has bad days. This is a wicked lesson for anyone to learn, you’re a million miles away better of an athlete than I can ever be. But a slap in the face is one of the best lessons I’ve ever had as an average club runner & I think that’s universal. You’ll be back & stronger for the experience, I know this. It was a great event to watch on the red button. Very well organised, no sooner had one race finished and been wrapped up then you were on the starting line for the next one! Lovely few hours sat in front of the screen!
    To improve the event; scrap the U23 category. The best runners in this age group could easily compete in the senior race, runners are maturing earlier these days not just in Africa but Europe too. In the senior race go back to a traditional X Country format; 8 to run 6 to score. This would be a true test of a country's depth in the sport. Three to score doesn't really put this to the test. If it was thought necessary it could be stipulated that each senior team must contain at least two U23 runners; this wouldn't have weaken3d the UK team at all. Women's team would have been strengthened!

    • @the.distanceproject
      @the.distanceproject  Před 6 měsíci

      On the team scoring… it was 4 runners to count for years but GB was very dominant, so they moved down to 3 to score to try and make the team event more competitive. Not saying I agree with it, just an explanation 👍🏼

    This is an exceptional video of a fantastic event. GB distance running is in very, very good shape. The last leg of the mixed relay was tough to watch. Do you think changing the order mid race was a mistake or would it have played out like that regardless?

    • @the.distanceproject
      @the.distanceproject  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I always say the relay result is the average time of 4 people. Yes the order can sometimes effect how people run, but if all 4 gave their maximum effort then you'd think the result would be the same whatever order they ran!

    It's unfortunate that Europe's love of cross-country running has not been matched in the United States. I'm especially impressed with the many age categories. America does offer cross-country programs in its public schools and there are a very few championship races for the elite high schoolers staged by a couple manufacturers of shoes and athletic apparel. But our events pale in comparison to Europe's annual events.

    • @the.distanceproject
      @the.distanceproject  Před 6 měsíci

      True. I think the scale of the US doesn’t help… here in Europe fans from many nations can take a 2hr flight for £100 and be at the other side of the continent supporting friends!

    • @donshields2379
      @donshields2379 Před 6 měsíci

      The way the championship events are pretty much same time doesn't help. You have NCAA's then NXN, followed by Running Lane and Footlocker. National club championships ND Footlocker fell on same day. One in Tallahassee and the other in San Diego. Opposite sides of the country. Which o e do you go in person to spectate. Sho stores could push local Running clubs and events.
