- Did someone say “more Mystery Menu”? Yup, we did. It’s here, and it’s a good one. In this installment, Sohla and Ham are challenged to make dinner and dessert in under an hour using Tajín. Can they do it? (Duh.) Will it be amazing? (Double duh.) Watch to find out.

About NYT Cooking:
All the food that’s fit to eat (yes, it’s an official New York Times production). - Jak na to + styl
New York Times, you hit the JACKPOT with these two. KEEP THEM HAPPY AND KEEP MAKING MORE! My week is made when I see a new Mystery Menu
💯 Yes!!!!!❤
These 2 took advantage of and abused all previous projects for all they could until they failed, blame others, then move on to the next.
@@emboe001 What's the source for that lol
Absolutely 🎉❤
@@emboe001can you elaborate please?
It’s so so so fun to watch two people who are so brilliant and in tune with each other. Whatever you’re paying them isn’t enough! Love these guys!
Also the sheer generosity of the two. Feeding the whole crew because that's what they want to do.
One hopes. When Asoka was being used by BA she, like all non white men got salary screwed. If NYT pulls the same crap I'm done with them, too. So you are correct. PAY YOUR D'ED CONTENT CREATORS!
Chefs: "I don't want this to be fancy. I want family style California fish tacos."
Also chefs: *adding trout roe to the guac*
also, uni
I love these episodes where Sohla and Ham are excited about the unique ingredients. I‘m really glad you changed it up from frozen pre-made stuff
Taijin is a great condiment--maybe next time Chamoy?! 🤤
Would 100% go to a Mystery Menu popup. That uni guac looks INCREDIBLE 😍
OMG! That's a great idea!! 💡 ❤
Yes please!
And the menu can be the drawing board printed! That would be so fun!
I would so go to that!
Ditto😊
I loved the mini timelapse at the end with the whole team eating together! It just felt like this episode was a big 'we care about you and we are going to make yall some GREAT food' from Sohla and Ham to their team
highly recommend watching their gingerbread house episodes. it goes from intense contest to how much caviar can we give our camera crew over the course of 3 years
@@nixthrice Yes! I just rewatched all 3 of them 🤣 It's so funny
Gosh these two are so knowledgable. I’m really glad Sohla told up for herself against Bon Appétit because she really deserves to be paid big bucks for her knowledge
Too bad she ws a total c**t to everyone she worked with though including Gaby, the immigrant who worked there. She's a terribly hypocritical person considering her claim to fame is calling out oppression.
She had no issue with BA giving her a career after her real world failures, then after using them up, ruined them to progress her own career. Classic narcissist.
@@emboe001if so many other chef’s didn’t have the same complaints as her, (and some extra ones) BA would have survived without her.
But they didn’t survive.
@@emboe001 how can you genuinely think a company who drastically underpaid their non-white employees was the victim here?
@@emboe001Why are you so triggered by Sohla? She's brilliant, likable, professionally trained, and great on camera. I hope she continues to live rent free in your head.
It's so weird how much I learn about cooking watching these two. I'm even picking up stuff they don't talk about directly, like using a food storage bag on the tortilla press (because plastic wrap is too wimpy). I can't believe how much more I'm learning about cooking in a video that sits between a recipe video and a game show.
I think part of that is that Sohla and Ham are kind of like natural educators. They can weave techniques and tips and methods through something that is mainly entertaining, without taking away from either the tip or entertainment. Learn so much from both of them every time!
I don't like the taste of raw onions so knowing that you can simply wash it a little in cold water is great. They have so much culinary knowledge, it's incredible.
Same. Simple syrup in the microwave? Duh-but I never thought of it! 🤯
Totally agree. Tasting my pickling liquid? If they say so, I'm gonna try it!
There's a 100% chance I'm going to use that avocado trick.
Don't get me wrong I love when they give Sohlam (Sohla + Ham) curveball ingredients like Jell-O or hot dogs 😂 but I kinda want them to keep leaning in this direction they're going, like where the ingredient is more uncommon rather than just being weird or wacky. I love that I get to learn about new food types that I've never heard of like durian, tajin etc. and it gives them free range to do more variety of meals and flex their skills a bit
Exactly. Rare and underappreciated, not just wacky.
@@Ryan_gogaku underappreciated that's exactly the word I was looking for, thats why I love Sohlam because their meal ideas are so original and creative it lends itself perfectly to this concept
I kind of enjoy there being a balance. Like sometimes underappreciated and uncommon, but sometimes left field that leaves them scratching their heads. I think both situations have their merits and puts forth different ways for them to shine
There's Ranch ice cream. Not sure how desserty it actually is?
"I don't want this to be fancy."
Proceeds to top guac with trout roe, uni, and micro greens. 🤣 Love Sohla & Ham!
This series is so fun to watch. It's incredible to me the way that Sohla and Ham can just pull menus out of thin air like this.
Please never stop with this show, but also; show the staff feasting on all that delicious food!!
If Sohla and Ham ever did a pop-up restaurant anywhere, I'd be there in a minute. I'm sure so many NYT viewers would love to go to a S&H taco party.
They already caused their restaurant to fail almost immediately.
@@emboe001dude you're obsessed
@@lc360right? it's sad and pathetic
The amount of money I would pay to be invited to a taco night at Ham and Sohlas 😅
Right!?!?!!
I can't stress how much I love Sohla and Ham. I am Sohla's biggest fan. If she has one fan its me, if she has no fans I'm dead. She seems so cool and chill and positive and nice and passionate and just such an interesting fun watch but also relaxing vibes. Sohla is like NPR. I love it. I hope she continues making videos forever and feels the appreciation from her fans without feeling overwhelmed. I appreciate all her hard work she's done up until this point so I can watch and enjoy her videos. This made my Friday :)
Same. I watch everything she does.
A MYSTERY MENU POPUP??? that would be incredible!! All their tasting menus have been building up for this moment ahaha. The end montage of Sohla and Ham making the tacos for everyone is so sweet.
can these be weekly??? i remember when it was just sohla with cameos from her husband, but I love that they are working together for this show. they are super talented and creative.
My opinion - these two are Wayyyy better than so many of the food network chefs and shows. Ham and Sohla - you are delightful!
These are the best days. I love these two so much! MORE PLEASE FOREVER!
The blue cap is the reduced sodium version, which I use. The mix of chili peppers, sea salt, citric acid, dehydrated lime juice, gives this a spicy tartness perfect for flavoring pickling liquid. Brings a brightness to fatty dishes, like fried food. Glad you posted this video!
Agreed. I use the blue because I can always add salt. I use it EVERY DAY. It sits next to my salt and pepper. Goes on so many many things.
We finally got Tajin in Australian supermarkets, but it's the regular green capped one, and it's SO SALTY. I don't know how anyone can enjoy that version. I can only hope I can find the reduced sodium version soon!
@@mysticseraph2213 In the US, Amazon will ship the 5 oz. blue cap bottle seen in this video for $2.63. I'd send you one if I could.
@@mysticseraph2213its meant to be, like a crisps seasoning. Its traditionally used on fried foods as the only seasoning or fruit (like unripe mango or watermelon)… thats where it really shines cause you get the salty/sweet/sour/spicy
@@mysticseraph2213 The regular sodium powdered version is best lightly sprinkled on fresh fruit or veggies (Mangoes and watermelon are my personal favorites). It is very salty but it’s assumed that will be the only sodium added to food and used very sparingly. I do prefer the reduced sodium one much like most people and would recommend buying some online if the original is way too salty for you. Fair warning though, reduced sodium doesn’t denote low sodium.
I also recommend trying the liquid tajín sauce which is chamoy based (chamoy is a sweet, sour and a bit spicy condiment made from pickled plums). It’s not as incredibly salty as the regular seasoning and not as spicy as it may appear from its dark maroon color. It’s used very similarly to the dry seasoning.
It’s exciting to hear these products are now being sold in Australia as I grew up with it in my Mexican-American family. Hope you enjoy it!
As someone who's been a cook for 20 years but not a chef. I enjoy watching new innovative chefs teaching me new things. Places I work don't offer the choice or chance of creativity. Helps me experiment at home.
The chemistry and love between these two is so precious! Protect them at all costs, NY Times!!
My CZcams dream would be for Sohla and Ham to collab with Hot Ones and make a unique dish with each of the 10 hot sauces and get interviewed by Sean ❤
i swear EVERYTIME i open up youtube I hope there is a new mystery menu episode and whenever there is it's like CHRISTMAS
sidenote: im so happy for the success of Sohla and Ham. I was so concerned for Sohla after the whole test kitchen thing happened so Im so happy that she’s still thriving ❤
Sohla is such a good artist. She should design some merch.
honestly like if she made shirts or tote bags with her meal plans doodled onto them, i'd buy them in a heartbeat
Congrats Sohla and Ham on the baby news!!
Producers: don’t forget to have them EXPLAIN what the secret ingredient is, in terms of flavor profile, usage, maybe history. A lot of folks don’t know what tajin is.
This one was pure JOY!!! Lots of love to Sohla and Ham and everyone who makes these episodes possible :)
Hands down the best episode yet. I like the editing direction and the upgrades to drawing board time. I also feel like the mis en place was better this time and the shift in tone from “competition cooking” to “how to entertain like a chef” is a welcome one.
Syd and Carmy coming up with the menu. Love ittt!!!
Yes omg it would be amazing to do a Mystery Menu Pop-up fundraiser!!
I'd pay for a ticket only knowing the Mystery Ingredient but not knowing the menu
“Remember that time we didn’t make our own tortillas?!” 😂😂
I love their sparkle and excitement this season - these unusual ingredients, paired with their creativity, make for SUCH a charming and educational show. I re-watch these often - it's so much more fun to see them stoked rather than frustrated with the ingredients!
You know it’s going to be AWESOME when they kick off the episode with Ham quoting Bootylicious. 😂
I don’t know why my favorite part of these videos is when Sohla draws out the entire menu. I would totally be ok ordering off a menu based only on her drawings. I might not know what’s I’m exactly ordering but I’m pretty sure it would be good.
I would travel to any pop up you guys start
PLEASE more Mystery Menu with Sohla and Ham! I know Sohla's on maternity leave probably so that's fine, but when she's ready to come back, I would be so happy to have her
I love Sohla and Ham! I just wish the videos were longer so that I could see more of how the prep the ingredients coz they both drop those knowledge jewels and tips
I love how Sohla clarified it was “California Mexican” inspired, and not Mexican Mexican. It is really respectful and healing. It’s the little things that make all the difference. Sohla is punk.
"healing" lmao get a grip
"Nothing fancy. Just what people eat at home" - cracks out fish roe and uni. Uh huh, lol.
this is my favorite series on CZcams right now
Im always so impressed by how much these two can accomplish in an hour. Really a testament to their skill. It takes me an hour just to cook a standard dinner for two 😆
I love the moment where Sohla is adding salt to compensate for the Tajin being low sodium, it's like:
NY Times: "Hey, we'll make it low-sodium Tajin, maybe cut down on salt, why not."
Chefs: "No."
They probably picked it so that Sohla and Ham could control the salt level to their taste a little bit more. Kinda like how baking recipes have you use unsalted butter, then add salt!
@@erinpetenko5215 great point, hadn't thought about that.
I've watched almost all of these, so I can say with total certainty: I would marry Ham too. They are amazing together.
It's so much more fun when they actually like the ingredient! Love it
With Ham and Sohla, if it’s not caviar, it’s uni. They are the best!
First of all, love the two of them. However, I am never ceased to be amazed about Sohla's ability to sketch on the fly like that.
HAM did sm!
Scratch made Torts (w/Sohla help)
Pickled Onions
Avo Crema
Tajin Guac
Fish Batter
Fry Fish
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Ham is like a technical knowledgable genius and Sohla is like a generational artist but with food. LIke honestly what a match. the way yall cook and the way NYT captures it is just amazing. Almost like a privilege to watch. If yall ever open a restaurant I would work for you, LOve
The whole show is amazing but I'm an AEW mark so everytime Ham rocks a shirt from them I love it even more!
Enjoyed Sohla when she was on her own, but, dang!!!! Throw Ham onto the mix, and it’s the full meal deal. Look forward to new episodes, rewatch the old ones, they inspire my cooking.
This is in my top five of all time favorite shows on CZcams! Thank you Sohla & Ham for being curious, particular, talented, adventurous, and opinionated! I love this sooooooo muuuuuuuuch! I think about food in new ways!!!!!! I think about making things in new ways!!!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I absolutely love the chemistry between Ham and Sohla ❤ This is such an amazing series, and I get so excited when I see a new video up! Keep up the great work yall!!!! You guys are killing it 😎
Craving every single thing Sohla and Ham created here. Wow, that's looks amazing. There may be a Tajin fest in my kitchen tomorrow. I say it every episode: this is the BEST FOOD PROGRAM anywhere right now.
These two are delightful. They kind of read each others’ minds. I want them to be my neighbors.
The fact that they shared a taco meal with the whole crew just melt my heart. -- the roe and umi on the guac kind of was a little bit tew meuwch but 100% LOVE THIS ONE!!!!! Awesome content … also: please do make the one with ranch … pleeeeease
I love this episode. Now let's see if I can get a taco party together for the weekend because all of this looks delicious and perfectly doable at home.
The enthusiasm went up to 11 this time! Love this series and this genius duo! Each episode is like the best kind of Christmas morning. ❤
This series is so effortless to watch and so rewarding, thank you to everyone there who puts in the work. It always makes my week to see new Mystery Menu is up.
Sohla and Ham are rockstars. Saw this and instantly clicked watch! All of this looks next level good!
Would definitely go to a mystery menu pop-up 💯💯💯💯
The pure joy in Sohla’s reaction to the ingredient just made me weep in happiness.
I'm mexican and I thought that I used Tajín for everything but no, no, no, no... this is really using Tajín for everything! And the plus is the very creative use of the masa, I would never imagine 🤯
Ham and Sohla are singlehandedly curing my kitchen depression. I love to eat, but for some reason, being in the kitchen making food makes me sad, because I keep thinking the electricity bill's gonna go up, or I'm gonna burn down the house, or I don't have ingredients for anything I want to eat, and just the usual pandemic stress. It's... a lot to think about, everything going wrong. But when I watch them cook together and stick to it despite all the challenges and commit to their crazy-delightful menu ideas, it gives me hope that I too can be happy in the kitchen again. They're so.. immersed, and knowledgeable, and one can tell that they love doing what they're doing together. It's infectious. I love this series.
I WAS ABOUT TO HAVE LUNCH WITH NOTHING TO WATCH AND THIS ARRIVED AT PERFECT TIME
This is one of those shows that I feel bad that future fans haven't discovered it yet.
I love how much Sohla and Ham just want to feed other people!
I love that we get to see everyone eat the food at the end!
IDK how no one has never done uni guacamole before. maybe the best idea of all time in the history of the world.
i have never been so hungry after watching an episode like this one
Good god my mouth is droooling. That's one lucky production team.
He was a bacon king. She was a durian queen. Can I make it any more obvious?
Another incredible Mystery Menu ep, love it NYT!
Tajin folks are about to see a bump in sales! Everything looked so yummy and accessible... except for maybe the fancy guac toppings.
Sohla and ham are so enthusiastic about food its just lovely to see them riffing off each other.
"That's my pot full of lard." That's the way to start!
@11:05 "Tips on tips on tips." Blessing us and the cabbage with their essential tips 🙏
This is what talent means. Sohla and Ham are the best cooking content on the internet today.
You can really see and feel that they love each other very much. It makes me very happy.
Me, already excited when I got here: :)
Me after seeing a Jamie Hayter T-Shirt: FEERRRRRRAL
I’ve watched every episode of this series and I’d be devastated if it ends so please keep on making more videos like this. So awesome watching these two create wonders with unique ingredients.
What a beautiful spread! Bring back the ranch seasoning another time though please - I bet Sohla and Ham could make a killer sweet-savory ranch dressing ice cream.
Omg, pressing avocados through a wire rack. Here I am with my single purpose avocado cutting tool. Haha!
@nytcooking keep these coming and compensate these two well! Such a showcase of their amazing brains and creative talent.
Seeing everyone eat together at the end warms my heart
I love seeing the ending where the meal is eating together with the camera crew because that’s so heartwarming to see everyone enjoying food.
One of the first episodes where I wish all of these recipes were on the website!
When I Konmari my CZcams subscriptions, I only keep NYTcooking for these two, because they bring me SO much joy
My favorite cooking duo! Also love the fact that Ham always wears the Clementine cap from the walking dead video game.
Imagine if Ham had never hosted a cooking show. He's so naturally good at it, it's hard to believe this format was a happy accident.
God the absolute chemistry between them was so amazing to watch, almost as amazing as the cooking! LOVE both of them
Those fish tacos looked SOOOO good! I think it would have been cool to use sliced Jicama instead of tortilla with that slaw! Super fresh and soft crisp crunch! And jicama goes soo good with tajin
Love this series so much.
This was incredible and I love these videos!
Ham wearing the AEW gear the last couple episodes... my loves collide! FOOD + WRESTLING!
That was so awesome to watch ❤
I love these 2 and this show!
This series always brings me so much joy
So glad they got Tajin and not ranch. I'm sure they would have made great ranch dishes, but those Tajin dishes are amazing!
I love it when they’re excited!!
