I think the problem people have with the switch in handheld is that most games UI are designed for a TV, making them incredibly small in handheld play. I've played so many long ass jrpgs while squinting
Same problem on the Deck but definitely worse. Unsupported games that still run assume you're playing a pc game on a monitor, not a handheld pc.
Still, the devs that have updated their games for the Deck show just how much small changes can improve the experience.
*That's why I wish nintendo would just make a portable switch monitor*
I just have bad vision. The switch oled is a little better for me but it’s still a very small screen to game on personally. It depends what kind of game it is though. But if it’s a game that requires a lot of reading….ew no thanks.

Yeah I noticed this on the switch screen playing things like Kirby it’s hard to see depth when dodging on the small screen but on the tv the screens to big so the graphics don’t look as good it really bothers me
I know people are ragging on this but accessories like this are a big part of the charm of the switch for me. With products like the switch pad pro, fixture s1 and s2, the flip grip, among a hundred other third party accessories, the switch is a Frankenstein of a handheld console that can physically change and be augmented to suite your needs depending on what game you are playing.
I think it's a good idea but this is some miserable execution
The S2 is the absolute best for the switch oled I cannot recommend that accessory enough. So cool to have the switch at whatever angle you want on top of a regular pro controller
Swapping the beautiful OLED screen for a low quality giant LCD screen is a no brainer.
The Orion screen is an interesting concept, but not really worth it imo. I'd rather get an Asus portable monitor for $170-200 depending on the model, or a little more to get one of Huion's or XP-Pens screen drawing tablets. I actiallu have an XP pen screen tablet, it can be powered with a battery, and works awesome with my switch and dock.

honestly, if it was a decent screen i'd be into it. chronic fatigue keeps me in bed a lot when sitting is too much and it'd be nice to have that bigger screen y'know?

100% this. I am in the same boat. I don't think a lot of people understand how many blind gamers there are. While the Switch does have some accessibility features, they are nowhere near as useful as it would be to simply have a larger screen. I don't even just need it for bed/tabletop. I actually would use it on a plane, train or automobile. This is why a simple portable monitor (which I use for hotels and hospital stays) is an option, but still not ideal. Keep gaming!

As someone who mainly just plays their switch while laying on the couch watching TV and doesnt care about having the power adapter plugged in... This thing is a dream come true. The price is a bit high for what youre getting but I've been wanting something like this since the switch first released.
I'd rather a portable oled monitor, that way I won't feel the need to upgrade to the fancy oled switch.

As a person with some certifiably shit vision, the original switch works for me for all but my worst eye days tbh. Idk how much this would do for people who are near or legally blind tbh, with the lowered color contrast and blown up pixels. The larger relative text size would be a quality of life improvement tho!
@@inkynewt Yeah, I rarely play on TV because of my eyesight is bad for long distances so I don’t mind the V2 model Switch. I wish in game menus added options for text sizes but I use the zoom in feature sometimes. But yeah, I agree with your point.

TBH I've always kinda wanted something like this, just a bit better. Imagine a 1080p screen like this that let you play "docked" portably. Better graphics/performance on the go.

Me too and the weight is no problem when rested on a pillow, table or lap.
Even cooler would be a Joy-Con Grip for a convertible laptop like the ASUS ROG Flow X13 or the Z13.
Would be the perfect portable handheld gaming device with Win11, tons of power with a beautiful 13.4" 4K 60 hz or 1080p 120 hz touchscreen and when docked with the eGPU it can be connected to any monitor and has the power of a desktop gaming pc.

Considering the Switch would be in Docked mode, that would lower battery life a fair bit too. Handheld mode lowers visual effects and resolution.
But I think that's also part of the appeal, for the games that run better docked. A number of the games I like I can't play handheld cause the downgrade or lost frames becomes too much for me. Though, a handful actually are better performing in handheld, which I'll never understand
@@Chronoflation most games perform better in handheld since the hit in resolution often outweighs the hit in allowed power usage, digital foundry's switch videos are all great I highly recommend watching them

@@JackLowry I've watched a number, but I still don't like how far that tradeoff usually goes for Switch games. A few, like BotW, actually pull it off surprisingly well, despite the docked version only being 900p or something like that. But I've also seen a number that either fall to just horrendous handheld resolution or frame rate, so I still prefer docked play most of the time.
@@jordanscherr6699 1080p requires double the power of 720p. So, unless docked mode only improves framerate but keeps the internal resolution the same, its probably not going to run better. But in theory, it should run better docked just because the switch gets ramped up to full power.

I helped fund the Orion honestly I'm happy with how my money was spent. It was sad that the screen was not true 1080p but however the device worked as intended and for someone like me who is larger in terms of body frame this definitely helped. also they are supposedly working on new models

Got it when first came out, first and last time I ever used it. I might be only one who would buy it, but would absolutely love an official Switch 10.1" Tablet w/ Pro Controller. Think that is why this appealed to me so much at first, but even with the "convenience" of sliding switch and joycons in, still a pain in the rear with little to no gain in visuals and pure awkward bulkiness.

TO ME if youre doing all of that you need to get an OLED switch ... mainly bc of the power delivery issues. the color looked awful and if you want a bigger screen, have it docked to a monitor.

I think the video lags because the way it plugs into the display, it's not actually the display itself. If you were to dock the switch in the official dock and use the HDMI into it, it wouldn't lag. I know because I have a portable monitor and when I plug the switch right into it, it'll lag but when I use the official dock it doesn't.

I bought an external monitor to play switch at the cabin with my wife. It's never been used to play switch.

I mean the best use I could see for this is if you like playing in tabletop mode, but I personally don't know anyone who has actually uses the Switch in tabletop over handheld, so a kinda small market I'd imagine that would be interested in this product, but I'm sure there are at least some niche amount of people who play in tabletop a lot

Ok Bob, this is THE PERFECT SCENARIO FOR A CONTRAPTION LIKE THIS (for me).
I absolutely love playing Overcooked with my cousins at my grandpa's ranch. Note, this ranch is in the middle of nowhere and barely has 4G internet and although there's like a fridge and stuff there isn't a single TV in the complex. It's super hard to play 2 player Overcooked in a Switch, even an OLED one, so, again, this is a deal breaker. I've thought about taking a PC monitor but not only I'd risk it since the road is so bumpy but there's barely any plugs... So, no

As a blind gamer, I am always looking (no pun intended) for anything that will help my very, very low vision in gaming. I bought an external monitor, but it would be super helpful to have everything mounted together like this. I realize this is a niche audience, but this is a HUGE help for people like me. Unfortunately, things like this (because they are so niche) are way more expensive than they need to be. Thanks for making folks like me aware of a new product, though! I'll put it in my wishlist and hope that I can pick one up used.

I could see it being nice to play games in docked quality on the go. A lot of games are better and smoother while docked. There are the rare few that are better in handheld, somehow, but I think this concept makes some sense. If it was actually a 1080p screen and had a more reliable power source, and some better protection for your Switch's screen, I think it's an idea a good few people would like to buy into. As is, it seems like it's more dreams that follow-through. I give them props for getting this far with it though. Good on them

Situations that the Orion(or a similar device that doesn't exist yet) would be better to me than the switch in it's vanilla state:
I'm out of the house a lot. I'm a bartender and I actually don't game much in my room. Taking this over to my parents down the road or just hanging outside under the car port with a pro controller sounds pretty nice to me. Or even taking it to work and playing a bit before my shift starts or afterwards when I'm having my shift drink. As someone who HATES the joycons and handheld mode, a larger screen with a built in dock and kickstand is a product I've wanted since 2017
My current "portable" setup is a gaems guardian pro. A true 24" beast of a setup with excellent picture quality, sound and.... The biggest pain in the ass to carry around and set up at the bar next to mine after work for smash bros games. This screen and audio of the Orion is much less grand, but it's also SO much more convenient. If I wanted to power the GAEMS off of battery, I'd need to get an expensive power bank with an inverter to content a 120v power supply to. It's also crazy heavy to carry around, at about 40 pounds
In short, the Orion is a shit replacement for handheld mode, but a godsend for tabletop mode and I wish upswitch had been smart enough to advertise it as such

made a 15.6" version years ago. heavy, but it's nice to have for 4 player games anywhere while travelling.
If it had a decent 1080p screen and the official dock hardware in it, i would get one for playing tabletop mode. Not for the bigger screen, but for the docked clock boost. Xenoblade 3 is gorgeous but i have to play mostly in tabletop and resolution drop absolutely murders emotional cutscenes.
It's hard to take a character seriously when they walk away from the camera and fade into pixels
I would use that in table top mode. Maybe to play co op games or multiplayer.

Bahb, the nexdock 360 is what I use. The switch will drain its power like none other but its a bit more... presentable. I mainly use the dock with my phone or desktop but the switch gets a keyboard and full 1080p

Bob needs a blitzwolf portable monitor that works as a switch dock via usb c and supports pd and allows passthrough switch charging and a usb port, or just straight hdmi if you have your own dock you believe in more, theyre light as and do hdr to some degree too, 10/10 prefer mine to this “hulk switch fist”

For those who are unsure about Vessi's, they're awesome. I own two pairs of them (both weekenders). I was washing my car recently and accidentally sprayed my Vessi's and my feet stayed completely dry. I definitely recommend them especially if you can get a discount
