    The RT was a really great bus. Everything London Transport learned working with the RT went into the design of the RM. The result being a truly magnificent bus. 50 years running in London streets. No other vehicle of any type could possibly equal that record. Incidentally I visited Bow depot when it housed trolley buses but that's another memory.

    • @warmike
      @warmike Před 2 lety

      "No vehicle of any type" is a claim too bold. Trams such as Tatra T3 and RVR-6 have served for more, and even among buses the RM has rivals like the Ikarus 280 and LiAZ-677.

    When you consider how much revenue they lose now it would have made sense to keep the conductors. Mind you they'd need a stabproof vest with the Londoners there today. I first rode the RM in 1959 when London was civilised.

      @@rabd9881 The original RM great that it was caused the demise of the trolleybus. They binned the trolley because they needed a big order to cover development of RM. The trolleys were the oldest so they went. A network of trolleys that were large, quiet and environmentally friendly lost forever. A lot were sold to Spain.

We had to the trip, many childhood London memories in southern Argentina. The only downside they had painted it blue and had to put a Mercedes engine in it, the old LT engine given up the ghost for lack of spares.

    You don't have to be in a wheelchair to be disabled. The majority of disabled users were people that benefited from having a conductor onboard to assist them.

      There was a heritage day on the number 11 in October. The bus stopped at a bustop with a wheelchair user wishing to use the bus. She couldn't as it was a Routemaster and had to wait for the next bus. The Routemasters were also a pain for buggy users. Other than that so iconic, with a long life set to come.

    Its the same as the Taxi trade. We had to change 500 vehicles in my area to accommodate wheelchair users at an additional cost of 15K per driver. We probably pick up 10 wheelchair users a week in total across our driver network. There must be a better way. I would love to see the wheelchair user stats for the buses and what it has cost to change all the buses.

I didn't think our flight club owned any planes younger then 20 years and if an old Cessna can maintain flight at that age I'm sure a london bus can do better!

      Its politics and the PC brigade that killed them. You can get wheelchairs on an RM we used to do it. and on the PD3's (similar) and old trams, at Blackpool The conductor leans back pulling the handles and the person with them gives the footrests a nudge up. The wheelcair fits safely in the conductors cubby hole by the staircase. Despite what the PC lot say, wheelchair users are rarely on their own. I only remember one occasion, and my driver came around and helped us then
