What moved the Russian government to declare war on Ukraine is that Ukraine supposedly broke a treaty they made with Russia.
The general response from Russias government is that Ukrainians are their brothers but that the country must be punished.
To make things worse is that during Russias peek occupation the government gave official state membership to multiple Ukrainian provinces.
This means Russia will not accept any peace offer unless they get to keep the new Russian Republics which they claim willingly voted to become part of Russia.
I know you have high hopes in Russias government and people but again this war is not solely of Putin’s doing, it’s the whole governments choice.
The Russians who protested the war either left the country or got locked up for conspiracy. Truth is while Russia is weaker then ever it’s government is experiencing new levels of internal power.

The evident emotion in this wonderful man, his strength, his bravery, his unwavering belief in democracy for his country fill me with admiration. I wish the mediocre, dithering leaders of Europe would WAKE UP and send Zelensky ALL the arms that Ukraine needs to defend itself and destroy the Russian army. Without compromise.
Both Ukraine and EU benefit from this show. Ukraine wants to get into EU and wanna join the European family and the protection that gives, and joining the EU would also be the final nail in the coffin for those who dream about Ukraine becoming a Russian province.
And for the EU its good publicity to have a person who is celebrated like a rockstar taking a visit. This war has welded EU togheter like how the war against Spain welded togheter the Netherlands, or how the war against France welded togheter all German states.
The EU have found inspiration and energy, after some troublesome years of economic crashes, Brexit, migration controversy and so on. Now have the Russian question finally been dealt with by France and Germany now sending weapons and setting down the foot against Russia. And Eastern Europe can finally feel like their concerns have been taken seriously and take a sigh of relief.
Germany joining the USA in this fight in Ukraine have also muscled overwhelming economic and military force for the Ukrainian camp, so that China have not ever taken the idea of intervention seriously, and thus escalating this war into a world war.
I do not like the EU, and I want it to cease to exist. But credit is credit is due. Its work with cutting down Russian energy imports have been impressive. And its economic support for Ukraine has been crucial. And for willingness to fight and for propaganda points have the EU-Ukrainian link been of a great help to Ukraine. And while Germany and France have been hesitant to help Ukraine from time to time, have the EU however always stood behind Ukraine since February last year and Ursulas words have been supportive of Ukraine.
That has not been unimportant in towing Europe towards an unified respons of helping Ukraine.
And helping Ukraine has been a noble goal. Its a country defending itself against foreign aggression according to the UN charter.
It is a country victim of a genocide and terrorbombings against hospitals, kindergartens, apartment buildings and bomb shelters.
Even I, the harshest of critics of the EU will take my hat off this time around for the EUs work for Ukraine so far.
Hungary have tried to sabotage things. The energy dependency has been high in central, eastern and southern europe. South-western EU have felt trouble with the motivation to get involved in this war which they might feel is far away and do not affect them..
and Hungary, Italy, France and Germany have for various reasons felt skepticism to help Ukraine.
But here we are today, and the EU have managed to push through sanction packages, and have helped to aid to Ukraine despite all those obstacles. Even Hungary have to a limited degree agreed to cut down its energy imports from Russia.
I feel happy that Ukraine is getting so much help. And I am happy that all European countries finally did take the choice to finally do the right thing and help Ukraine, and not stand idle and letting evil win when it had started an unprovoced, unjustified illegal war and commited genocide. Especially for Germany with its complicated history do I feel happy that they now do what they can to compensate for their historical harm, by trying to stop a genocide from happening today.
They can feel pride in that. And we all can feel that now. Even neutral Switzerland and Sweden have made contributions to Ukraine.
And small countries like Iceland, Estonia and Latvia have made contributions despite their small populations. I am still waiting for Hungary to do more.. and I remain hopeful. Putins days seems now to be numbered, and with that will Orbans best friend be gone.

I think it is very problematic that, although the countries within the EU are equal partners, an extra meeting was set up with the leaders of some of the biggest countries. These countries too were present at the speech in the EU Parliament the next day. (The UK meeting was ok, as UK is no longer within the EU).
Zelensky: please don't! You know that all countries together are making big efforts. "Many a mickle makes a muckle". You want to be part of the EU? Then it is important that you understand the concept. The countries outside France and Germany got a bit irritated by this.
If you are going to become a member in time: Ukraine is a quite big country. An attitude of size over quality, like in Russia and the US, is not the concept of this Union. If EU turns into a place where smaller countries are just vassals of the big, we might experience growing movements in countries wanting to leave the EU.
True but Ukraines war and the U.K. economic crisis both proven that regardless of the downs it’s still more beneficial to be part of the E.U.
That said I personally believe the E.U. will become a super country like the U.S. is, it’s biggest issue will be language barriers which lets be honest is not as big of a issue then it was fifty years ago.
Zelensky are not visiting the Baltics because they have already given everything they had to Ukraine. And it is in the big economies where you can find the amounts of heavy weapons that Ukraine desperatly needs right now. I don't think that Zelensky would hesitate to visit little Greece if it was willing to give away say 100 tanks to him.
