    • @skunkjobb
      @skunkjobb Před rokem +1

It could have a tough skin but still be buoyant thanks to a filling of maybe not cork (too compressible) but syntactic foam so it's not technically contradictory. But of course it's not made that way in reality and conning towers don't float.

I was once a crew member of a submarine. I've also been in a DSRV, there is at most room for a dozen people in a DSRV. A hit by two torpedo's would certainly flood the engineroom causing the boat to go down by the stern not the bow. None of these people would survive.

Reminds me of that old book called "The Shepherd" by Frederick Forsyth. Anyone read that one? A Royal Air Force fighter pilot is flying home from Germany on Christmas eve. His aircraft (a Dehaviland Vampire) experiences an electrical malfunction and loses its navigation instruments and radio. Now lost on a cold, dark, and foggy night, far above the clouds, running out of fuel, and panicking that he is about to die suddenly sees an old WWII fighter (a Mosquito I think) flying at his wingtip. The old plane escorts the lost pilot through the fog and down to the runway. Once safely on the ground he inquires as to who the fellow was that saved him as he wants to thank him, but discovers that he is a well-known airman who died a few years earlier in the war. Its quite a creepy yet stirring story. As a kid I read it many times and used to love the black and white paintings in the book.

conning towers normally don't break off, the sub fractures rather then beer canning, and all air becomes super compressed to the toxicity level of oxygen poisoning. following that, the contents get "DIESELED" due to the air mass being compressed beyond tolerance and stuff goes whoof. but you'd be dead way before that happens. 500 meters isn't a working depth of most subs, since the sonar isn't exactly hitting much when your below the other guy. also RUSSIANS are spec'd for a max depth of the Akula class diving to depths of up to two thousand feet (609.6 Meters).
each 10 meters (33 feet) of depth adds one atmosphere (1 bar, 14.7 psi, 101 kPa) of pressure on a hull per square inch (6.4516 CM squared), so 300 meters (1,000 feet), on a hull is withstanding thirty atmospheres (30 bar, 441 psi, 3,000 kPa) of water pressure for those area amounts.
the United States SEAWOLF SSN: Attack Submarine, Nuclear-powered Class with it's exceedingly strong hulls are shown for a Test depth of 1,600 ft (490 m), that's TEST. not max depth, and the real limits for crush, or working depth are CLASSIFIED.
but the russians and chinese hate those boats...because they also are some of the quietest things ever made for snooping about and standing ready to repel other subs, limited only by food on board for mission length.

While I pray we never find out the ACTUAL crush depth of ANY of our subs, I'm sure the actual crush depth is far in excess of 1600 ft. The Thresher had an official test depth of 1000 ft, unofficially 1300 ft at the time of the accident. However evidence shown she didn't fold until over 2400 ft down. Add 50 years worth of technological advances, and i wouldn't be surprised to learn that our newest classes of SSNs and SSBNs could survive into the 3000 ft range.

  • @johnbower7452

From something I watched the waiting would be the worst part; once it happens it's so quick you wouldn't feel anything; you'd be dead from the mix of superheated air; pressure and the explosion before your brain had time to feel it.

  • @leszekandhisrandomstuff.9228

Ok the story is kinda cool and I liked it. I even clicked the thumbs up button.
Now I am going to make fun of the technical mistakes because that to is fun. Lets see, going from memory and only watching the video once:
    1) Active sonar when cruising. (A pet peeve of mine.)
    2) Wrong volume of active sonar. Loud enough to give yourself away but not to actually echo locate anything at any useful range.
    3) Actually all the sound from that boat seems to be all wrong from start to end.
    4) Bow planes and fair water planes on the same boat.
    5) Those torpedoes would have mangled that boat a whole lot more and probably just killed the crew outright.
    6) What are those uniforms they are wearing?
    7) That sub interior is in great shape for a ship that just got hit by 2 torpedoes. That boat should be saveable. Did the crew even try to blow the ballast?
    8) How do you fit the crew of that thing into that DSRV.
    9) That crew member wakes up and doesn't do anything like try to blow the ballast.
    10) That computer is special. It, like, knows things.
    11) Crush depth is not exact. It might be around 500 meters but you don't know exactly when.
    12) That crew member gives up without doing anything and takes a seat between diesel engines. Well I guess that sub didn't have to be nuclear.
    13) The hatch that closes when he enters the sail. Star Wars!
    14) The sail is not going to float, and not that high if it does, and not that stable. I am going to be generous and say it will survive the implosion. Because ghosts.
    15) Through out the whole thing, the interior of that sub is nice and flat and level. The exterior of that sub is in like a 90 degree dive. This isn't a mistake, you are just not supposed to know about this classified technology.

When the thresher imploded a couple hundred ft off the bottom at 4,000psi, it disintegrated the entire boat. Like an airplane crash. Our nuclear submarines used to have 2 inches of hy80. And at test depth they string a piano wire across the sub, and measure how much it sags in the middle. They do not look like the raisin surface between bulkheads like is shown in this video. That is called artistic license. And the bulkheads would do what if 2 inches of hy80 went in at supersonic speed. Nothing of the interior would be recognizable even the people. You would die so fast 1/1000th of a second you would feel no pain at all. You would be and then not. The Russian submarine off hiwalya failed at a very moderate depth so everything inside was still good including the people.

Are you talking about the K-129? That's the only russian sub I know of lost off Hawai'i. It was discovered at 5,500M or 18,000 Ft., not exactly shallow water.
Its a fascinating story in itself. The CIA with the help of the Navy and Howard Hughes managed to engineer a giant "claw" to reach down and grab the K129 and bring it to the surface. They were partially successful, we know for a fact. Allegedly the sub broke while on it's ascent and we only recovered 40' of the now. There are rumors however, that we actually retrieved the whole thing, or that we went back a second time and got the rest.
      Fascinating story either way.

As the sub approaches crush depth and you hear the metal and parts creaking and getting squeezed, you hear the voice of Willy Wonka, though you cannot find him anywhere in the sub. And he is singing the infamous "Wonderous boat ride song", with some lyrics changed for the submarine:
"There's no earthly way of knowing,
    Which direction we are going,
There's no knowing how deep we're going,
Or which way the submarine's going,
Is it raining, is it storming,
    Is a hurricane a blowing,
Not a speck of light is showing,
So the danger must be glowing,
Are the fires of hell are glowing?
    Is the Grizzly reaper mowing?
(Creaking grows more and lasts more)
YES! The danger must be growing!
For the submarine keeps on diving!
    And it's certainly not showing,
(Creaking and squeezing sounds grow even higher, as pipes start leaking out like crazy inside the sub)
    Any signs that it's ascending!
WOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOH! OH OH OH AH AH AH!
    (BOOOM! BOOM! BOOM BOOM!)

This story really has nothing to do with submarines. It’s about a strange man with strange fantasies of little girls in places nobody will find out about. It also shows we have spies in the military. How else would he know the conning tower detaches after implosion and you float to the top. Problem is now your under arrest for being a pedophile and they kill him in prison slowly. Story over

Torpedo strike was in the stern. Flooding in the stern results in a stern-heavy descent with the bow pointing up, not like you see here. If you can't do an emergency blow the sub continues to crush depth "backwards", maybe vertically.

Well, if we're going to nitpick you also wouldn't see a random sub with a dsrv on piggyback, you wouldn't see a direct torpedo strike like that since it's less effective, the worst sub crew in the history of ever wouldn't abandon ship at such a shallow depth.
I mean, this list goes on and on.

Just a FWIW: It's essentially impossible to see the full length of a submarine (much less attacking torpedoes AND a submarine) underwater because maximum ocean visibility is usually a little over 100'. In absolutely perfect conditions you might get close to 150' but at that distance whatever you saw would be a blur. All the submarine movies - even and especially big budget ones - show these panoramic views of the entire submarine (or multiple submarines as in Hunt For Red October) and sometimes even backgrounds. Hey, I like it and it's fun, but just remember it's Hollywood and CGI.

no submarines have a attached dsrv all the time. dsrv is only deployed when dissub is announced and US sub forces arrive in time before all is lost at sea. All these events don't necessarily happen at all. So other options are used.

The suggestion was that he climbed inside a pressure vessel. The conning tower, if otherwise flooded, wouldn't be crushed. The pressure inside and out would be equal, aside from the inside of the pressure vessel.
Why it all floated, though, is beyond my ken. Not only floated but bobbed around on the surface like a soap bubble.

For you simple minded, technically accurate, perfectionist critics: Some people read. Some watch movies mainly to see how many "errors" they can find. I guess it makes them feel "pretty smart". But wait⚠️, life isn't that simple. Miracles and especially the supernatural usually don't have an explanation and are downright weird. I tell you, I just loved this short film so much, I saw it 3 times! Oh, not to continue searching for unrealistic events so as to congratulate myself more but for it's theme. As a kid, I liked cartoons for their point -- not the nonsense. The heartwarming point in this was that the man lived after being forgotten and thanks to the little, precious girl spirit. There is a play titled: The Lass who loved a Sailor. Could not that apply in this case? (she saved his life)✝️
