don't sweat it Sam...the irony of the whole thing is why they were there. The Titanic holds us all in morbid attention and for some, they couldn't get enough either, hence the irony of the Titan's demise. I think it is because when we see something like this...we try and put ourselves in those shoes. We wonder what WE would be feeling and doing in their place.

They also said that the Titan was normally carried ON a boat/ship, not DRAGGED by the ship. It cost a lot more to put the Titan on a ship, and dragging it was cheaper, which they did drag it. They said the dragging was a threat to the integrity of the Titan’s carbon shell.

The ice breaker they were using as the mothership was not certified to launch deep sea submersible craft. They would have been breaking the law to carry it on the deck, so they dragged it to get around the law through a technicality. I've heard that Canada is going to be up the owner's ass since they knew they were circumventing the law, but they were just greedy.

Then lets go cheap on the materials, fire all the experienced guys and hire a bunch of hipster know-nothing children who crave being told how smart they are. Then lets drag it the whole assembly over the surface of the ocean, beating the crap out of it in the process in the worst weather we've seen in a while because we're too cheap to get a support vessel that could actually accomodate the thing on board. Finally lets bet our lives on it, dropping a quarter mil in the process to see something that's been seen hundreds of times before.

The Navy heard it immediately and knew exactly what it was.
Back in the '70s a Russian sub imploded about 1600 mi north of Hawaii.
The Navy's sonar net in the Pacific was advanced enough at that time to where they located it and was able to recover it later on.
The sonar net we have today is far more advanced and they hear everything that's going on under the ocean

As a former sonar supervisor on submarines, I have a theory about the “banging” noise. The fact that it was every half hour is very telling. If it were humans signaling an sos, they wouldn’t do it briefly every 30 minutes, it would be as frequent as possible and somewhat chaotic. The predictable timing of the noise is likely from some automated mechanical source. Likely sources are drilling rigs, commercial fishing, or even sounds of another ship or submarine. Due to convergence zones in the ocean, sounds can occur from many hundreds, and even thousands, of miles away, yet sound extremely close.
Your theory is rubbish. I happen to know that in the navy they are trained to bang on the hull of a submarine every 30 minutes. So it will have been those trapped inside the tin can signalling to those at the surface etc they were alive.
this is untrue, they teach Submariners to bang just like that for a few mins each 30 so that it doesnt blend into the background sound of the sea, its very loud in the sea so the sound stopping and starting makes it harder to miss.

It’s definitely possible that you’ve been there more recently than I have. I was taught to tap the hull in the SOS pattern, pause briefly and repeat. The CP (casualty procedure) doesn’t say to stop for 30 minutes in between. If you aren’t tapping SOS, you are to tap in random patterns. As a sonar supervisor, it’s very difficult to tell the difference between a machine knock or a person tapping, if it is a steady beat. If it’s every 30 mins exactly, it’s a machine on a timer. You listen for chaotic patterns or time intervals that wouldn’t be programmed. What subs did you serve on?

For the people concerned about the cost, when I was in The Navy in the early 80's we loved to lend a hand to anyone in need out at sea. We are normally doing exercises and it was wonderful for us to be able to help when we could. As far as the Coastguard goes that is their job.
Real world experience is great but the cost is born also by the taxpayers. Imagine if that money paid for healthcare of a child.

Only a minor point: the Oceangate vehicle was a submersible not a submarine. A submarine operates on its own systems, while a submersible needs a surface mothership to perform its function.

Submarine just means under the sea. It's derived from 2 Latin words. For example, under sea telecoms & power cables are also called submarine cables. Submersible just means the ability to be submersed.

When a company like OceanGate refuses to conform to regulations and testing of their submersible, this should be a giant red flag for anyone thinking about paying $250,000 to travel down to those depths. Everything about the Titan would make me nervous. What if it got snagged on some part of the wreckage? How maneuverable was that thing?

There is NO excuse for avoiding non invasive testing on the core and attach points. Carbon fiber was making cracking noises. It was deteriorating from each dive. Tests would have shown this. This was inevitable.

I think that OceanGate knew pretty quickly that the submersible was lost. However, hoping against hope is a human characteristic. While the company's CEO Rush was an idiot with a death wish, he seemed willing to risk the lives of others who believed they'd be safe. And the Titanic indirectly added 5 victims to its tragic total. 💙

TITANIC CLAIMS 5 MORE LIVES -- should be newspaper headline if people still read newspapers. The CEO risked his life in his belief... as flawed as it may have been. Although I don't agree with his logic, I respect his commitment. The passengers were informed the vehicle was experimental and not certified by any authority, so they also willingly took a risk. Sadly the risk proved fatal, but it is hard to gain something without risk...

The only thing different is that visiting the Titanic is one of high risk and one only available to the wealthy. As long as people aren't vandalising the site, there's nothing wrong with visiting it. We should be glad people still care enough to want to visit the wreck, as it keeps her memory and that of the tragedy alive. The sea has claimed many lives and many ships, most of which have been forgotten or which don't get nearly as much attention as the Titanic.

The after banging might easily have come from various bits of equipment failing / imploding but I believe that the initial implosion was catastrophic and that those inside were killed instantly.

@@JD-Media maybe or maybe they were echo's after all who knows how loud an implosion is under water at that depth after all there were echo's going on for a day after that asteroid hit Russia a few years ago and detonated with the force of 500 megatons of power so the implosion might have sent out a loud bang that echoed around the oceans for hours or days after all it was the first sub implosion that was being monitored right after it happened

The frustration in all this is that the tragedy was avoidable. If Stockton had heeded the warnings of his own engineers and dozens of experts in the field, those five people would be alive today. My heart goes out to the families for their loss. 💙

They waited eight hours, because in the past there had been problems, and the sub did come to the surface after many hours. So they weren’t going to report it until they were sure that the sub was not going to surface. It makes total sense from their point of view, considering that at one point the sub had been lost for six hours, and did finally surface when it dropped its ballast.
I bet they hesitated because they didn't want to incur Rush's wrath just in case it worked out. Bad press and all. But lives were at stake. They should have escalated shortly after losing contact. The topside crew failed those passengers completely.
That says a lot about how unsafe and incompetent they were that they would wait 8 hours because of previous issues. They should not have been in business, taking paying customers.

@@BambinoAmericano people who went on test dives before said they heard loud creaking and popping noises which caused them to resurface. So that was probably the last things they were hearing
Also investigators say they had sent a message to the mothership saying they were having some difficulties and dropped the weight in an attempt to resurface, but something failed and caused them fo descend further
I am a retired Saturation diver having spent over 9,000 / 10,000 hours living at depths of 600mtrs and breathing Helium mixed gas ; all of our diving systems were constructed from high grade steel as are all underwater submersibles so when I first heared of a system being constructed from Spun Carbon Fiber I knew that it was only a mater of time before we would all share this tragedy.

You are correct. When I was in the Navy I worked for the command that was responsible for laying listening devices on the Pacific (not the Atlantic) Ocean floor but of course the Navy is not inclined to give details of this system for security reasons.

While I feel for the families of those lost, I can’t feel sorry for the Owner and the Pilot of the Craft. The owner, the Captain of the Sub knew there were problems with the Craft yet kept taking people down. He caused those people to die, he is totally responsible for their deaths. He had been warned many times about the problems with the Craft yet continued to risk people’s lives. He killed those people, no if ands or buts about it….
Those passengers were responsible for their own lives. While they didn't build a death trap they didn't research the safety of the company, people, or equipment they would depend on to survive a hostile environment. Whether or not the Navy delayed making its findings public had no bearing on the fate of the Titan and its crew. Awaiting third party confirmation, rather than making a premature announcement, is a reasoned response to the circumstances. 💙

Try looking at the public news conference held by Pelagic Research Services that owns the Odysseus 6K deep water ROV; they arrived at the dive scene from Buffalo NY in record time. There were no other ROVs capable of reaching the depth of the Titanic, although several from different countries (and the US) were already on site and one had been destroyed in trying to exceed its depth to get down to the required depth to search.. Odysseus arrived on June 22, prepared to do a rescue. It took that long to pack and crate this behemoth ROV and it's tools and support crew, fly it to St. John's, and transport it by ship to the titanic wreck site (from St. John's to the wreck site takes 16-18 hours, with more time to set it up and launch it). THERE WERE NO DELAYS AT ANY. POINT. That story that the Military was holding things up is is a bit of fraud on the part of some ambulance chaser. In fact, there were NO delays anywhere.

In the case of the Titan, what is remarkable is the speed at which everything happened, once it was determined that the submersible was truly missing. It took nearly 75 years to find the titanic, and just 4 days to find the Titan! See my comment earlier explaining why it took those many hours to find and analyze the sonar anomaly. I wonder if they will ever recover the Rubik's cube that was on board. Apparently, the 19 year old was trying to create a depth record for solving the Rubik's cube over the Titanic. Probably, not unless it was made from Titanium. We have heard from multiple sources that they died instantly. Though I still think that there had to be some noises before it happened. I’m curious to know what it was like for the five people on board the Titan. I’ve been looking for a documentary or something to read on research about the play-by-play of what all happened that day, but can’t seem to find much information on it. I can’t get enough of the story. Something that most you tubers don't acknowledge is that the sub was at a depth of 3500 ft not the 12500 ft that some would like everyone to believe, that only sensationalizes the tragedy. Another thing is that body remains were recovered, how much how many or who has not been revealed and not talked about simply out of respect for the families involved. I'm sure they have photos but I doubt they will be released for along time.
I have to agree with the Navy not saying anything without some kind of proof. As stated they wanted to keep the search going. As a Marine veteran, who served time on a few Navy ships, they are some of the hardest working and dedicated individuals in the military. 💙
The navy knew the sub imploded. They didn’t want to tell the public.
The Navy didn't keep it a secret; they told the Coast Guard as soon as they had found the sound. The Coast Guard did not regard the sound as being definitive enough to call the search off.

When a vessel on or in the sea goes missing, they are in search/rescue mode until physical evidence shows no hope of survivors. Once they have that physical evidence, the mission becomes a recovery effort. In the case of Titan, physical evidence of the wreckage turned it into a recovery effort. Had they passed the 96 hour mark (also considered physical evidence) without finding anything, that also would have turned it into a recovery effort. At the time it was deployed, the Odysseus 6K ROV was fitted with equipment to lift the Titan from the bottom, because it was still a rescue mission at that point. This was the first ever implosion of a small submersible at depth, and would probably present as more of a "pop than a boom," like a large metal submarine. The Navy had no precedent for identifying the anomaly they discovered in their recorded data, so they could not say with certainty that it was an implosion, only that it was "consistent with" an explosion or implosion.

The 'banging' sounds may have been caused by maintenance work on ships working in the area. I think the implosion happened the first day when they lost communication with the sub on its way down to the Titanic.
That noise would be continuous, not intermittent every 30 min.
We know it imploded the first day. It would of dropped ballast and returned if not. Also it was heard. And the banging was determined to likely be a faulty wire / wiring according to Canadian coast guard.

This video left out important information: the Titian descended too fast and when problems arose Titian was unable to quickly ascend. It was these two problems that resulted in Titian’s destruction.

Yes, I think the repeated sounds that were picked up on lidar were from the sub. If the implosion is loud enough to send out a sound wave to the surface than it is loud enough to echo off of the ocean floor hours later.

Critical thinking may have saved some lives. Even someone like me who has minimal knowledge of carbon fiber knows going down to the bottom of the ocean in a cf tube is probably not a good idea. I am amazed it lasted several dives tbh.
I am not sure this is a correct statement. Yes Carbon Fibre has properties that are not ideal for a sub, but it also has properties, which are ideal for use in a sub.
I see no scientific reason why you could not build a safe sub from carbon fibre. It is just more challenging, and actually a more professional company was working on a carbon fibre sub to go to the challenger deep, which has 3 times the pressure of a trip to the Titanic.
Clearly the Titan was not this safe carbon fibre sub, but for all its flaws an amateurish construction it did still last several dives to the Titanic, which in itself is an indication that you probably could do an improved version that was safe. All it would take would probably be 25% extra redondancy, better quality control between dives and a more professional construction method. Oceangate reportedly cut corners in both quality of carbon fibre, uni directional layering, lack of curing, etc. Whether you should is another question, as a safer and better tested alternative exist, and after the Titan it way be a while before anyone tries again.
But given that we use carbon fibre hybrid constructions in airplanes, F1 cars and in spaceflight, I would certainly not rule out that we in the future figure out safe way to use it for subs as well, and Ocengate was right about one thing. Unless we try and test things, we will never learn. Just dont use a “tourist” sub as your test vehicle with humans on board …..
The fact that OceanGate did not report the incident for 8 hours is testament to the fact losing communications between the Polar Prince and the submersible was a regular occurrence and they weren’t ‘concerned’ about it initially - what a way to run an operation with human lives aboard?! Something inherently unacceptable had been ‘normalised’. I hope it was really quick for those on board and that they couldn’t see it ‘coming’. Unfortunately, with what is left of the vessel, we may never know with any accuracy. 💙

Knowing that the navy is listening, I think it might be worthwhile for submerged vessels to continually send ping signals that contain the craft's signature, much the same way aircrafts do with their transponders. The moment the ping no longer transmits, the navy knows you're in trouble. If an implosion happens simultaneously, game over.

The pressure at the depth of the Titanic is over 400 times atmospheric pressure and the temperature is near freezing so you must have materials that can expand/contract evenly with pressure/temp extremes such that the seals are not damaged.

The multiple ‘knocks’ could be from the cavitation where the air inside the Submarine gets compressed to the point where it explodes and expands again, only to be compressed again. This repeats until the pressure difference has been neutralised. So not just one shockwave from the explosion, but multiple
