Scarified my not bad looking 50msq lawn a few weeks back, looked like the Somme when I'd done 2 opposing passes.. over seeded at 50gm/Msq and top dressed with a soil/ sand / compost mix, well raked level with the back of the rake which I'd extended with a strip of steel. Watered every 2 days when no rain etc. Looked grim for a few weeks but now it looks pretty good. Top dressing filled the hollows etc, AMG hardly present. Always raked the old lawn with a spring tine rake to 'fluff up' any AMG previously present. Other thing I've done is swap out the front rollers on the mower (1964 Qualcast battery electric one) with 2 small wheels, this stops the raised AMG stalks being flattened again by the front roller, lots more in the grass box too. Love the vids.... very instructional, swapped to all liquid feeds / treatments now too..

I've finally found a use for my otherwise useless oscillating saw fitted with the rounded blade, the patches of poa I was getting were the size of large dinner plates and the grass was tuft like, I tried cutting a cross hatch pattern into them, raking out and removing the material with a spring tine, then too dressing with fine compost and fine fescue seeds, it seems to be working well 😅, I also brush my lawn after cutting and watering to enhance the stripes, my neighbours possibly think I'm nuts, but they can't get stripes in their plastic lawns 😎

40% of golf greens are poa and they have verticutters with blades super close together..so no but it keeps it down...i think the best thing is do what wimbledon did ..they used fescues and bent grasses up until the 90s..they had poa problems because fescue grows seeds dies grows seeds dies..so poa can get in..someone invented dwarf rye and now they dont get much poa because rye grows..it doesnt seed its nut off and die..so poa has less chance of getting in..wembley and wimbledon use mm50 seed for £5 per kg but you have to buy a big bag..or just get johnsons tuff grass from b&m..that is also dwarf rye..no point using anything else in the uk unless you have a golf green and you would use bent.green keepers would be better using dwarf rye on the fairways and tees but..they are so called experts and think they know better..reality is they are 30 years behind the rest of the world..so id scalp the lawn verticut up and down side to side and overseed with dwarf rye.top dress done

Poa A. is a prolific seed producer and nothing short of a yearly program of preemergent + xonerate + a kicker (Tenacity/Pylex) will provide consistent control (PoaCure is great but only available if you are a golf course). Most everything done here is just spreading the seed heads. In my climate Poa germinates nearly year round and I've had to do considerable research to come up with a management strategy as well as quite costly chems (mentioned above). If I couldn't get access to those chems and PRG was a good grass choice, I would renovate every 3 years or so. Manual removal with Poa A, if you miss just a few plants that drop seeds, will become impossible the following year. Lastly, Poa A tends to root very shallow and checks out during heat waves. You can take advantage of this if your climate allows, as they will drop seeds before dying and then once temps drop and rainfall comes back it will regerminate. Time your pre-emergent correctly and don't aerate during that germination window.

very interesting, here in the U.S. midwest Poa is also a problem, most use a pre-emegent to control it as well as other crabgrasses, one weedy grass extremely tenacious is quack grass, which spreads by rhizomes and is perennial. if anyone has had success managing it please comment. thank you!

quack grass, and I know it will get out of hand if left to go. you cannot dig this out. I take a small paint brush ,and brush roundup on the leafs. If you spray it, it will kill a lot more grass than you intended. The roundup will control. keep doing it till you don't see it any more. If you try to dig, the rezones will just keep going and create more.

Proper verticutters are too damn expensive in the UK. I've been using the thick blade cartidge on high settings to lift the grass but i'll try the scarifer cartidge with thin tines next on high settings which should do a better job but i'm worried it might take too much good grass out too.

bosch verticut.the blades are about 10mm apart ..which is closer than the allett cartridge and good for overseeding .the height setting is -10mm,-5mm,0.+5mm..about £100....dont get me wrong they are not super close like a commercial golf green verticutter but like you say they are at least £2000..the scarifier cart is alot less aggressive than you think..its more of a brush

I bought a cheap electric scarifier , removed the scarifier head and dismantled the cutting blades . I then sharpened them up with a grinder until they were as thin as a knife .
I found that on a high setting it does a fair job between cutting and lifting the lateral growth . After this , the lawn does not look like it has been wrecked . Overall it is a help with the Poa . Just a pity we could not get a product to eliminate it .

I used a weed burner with a small tip with succes, the seeds will burn/ be killed before the actual gras is burned. You will hear the seeds pop, just be careful not stay on the same spot to long then you will actually kill the grass.

    • @Premier_lawns_official

      Great question. Yes and no
The roller does help bend the grass over, adding to the stripe
But its main purpose is to keep the cutting unit stable ensuring it moves straight and cuts at a consistent height.
