  • Watch part 5 of our lawn renovation journey. We undertake our first cylinder cut after 8 weeks aswell as verticutting the lawn to get rid of the dreaded POA and Yorkshire Fog
NOTE- the mower is Austin's kit mower from the shed- no surprises leaked! Unfortunately we have no mowers available to use for videos as the next unsold Liberty's are not coming off the line until August. Another great year for us so thank-you for your support!

I have learned two tricks in the fight against poa annua:
-Pregerminate your seed in dump soil to fill holes faster.
-Let the lawn grow a bit higher every two weeks because the seedheads will then be in cuttinghight.

I've got a few trays just like yours at hand in which I keep seeding grass with roughly two weeks intervals. When I remove the Poa Annua I immediately fill up the hole with some grass which I transplant from the tray. This way the soil in this spot is not exposed to sunlight and new or dormants weed seeds won't germinate.
Lot's of Poa Annua everywhere in lawns in The Nerherlands this year. Couple of reasons for it I believe being:
    A) Cold and wet weather in this spring
    B) No mow policy by cities during the month of May (good for the bees👍) but spreads seeds everywhere.
    C) The popularity of robo mowers which only mulch and thus spread the seeds all over the lawn. I literally see peoples lawns get ruined within two years after switching to robo mowers.
I'm curious how others feel about this.
Well, off onto my lawn now for my daily 10 min. Poa Annua battle. Have a great day everyone.

I hear you OTW, we had that no mow bullshit in the uk, turning all the public grasslands into weed and pollen factories that when they finally did chop they just mulched smothering the grass, it also blew into the roads and shit where it gets wet, gets slippery and dangerous.
They should have baled it for the farmers, the council had a better crop at the roadside than in some of their fields! 😅

After killing off small rear lawn twice trying to solve the poa annuaa problem I was once again inundated. I have spent most of spring and summer hand picking out. I have even been applying herbicide with very small paintbrush carefully to individual poa annua leaves. I found this quite effective although leaving many brown spots. Still have 10 to 15 minutes hand picking out plants after every now. At last I think my efforts are paying off and hopefully I'll see the real benefits next spring. I have doubted myself a few times as to whether I'm doing the right thing. Your video has convinced me I am so thank you for that; I'm not going mad.

It's astounding how quickly the poa finds its way back. I wonder how much of it is dormant seeds waiting to germinate just under the soil surface waiting for an opportunity. The brush cartridge would also stand the stalks and seed heads up but of course not cut them of like the verticutter. I don't know how effective it would be to use this cartridge on my liberty 35 as it doesn't have micro adjustment.

I honestly think you’re fighting a losing battle Austin. Until we’re able to spray out Poa Annua in the UK trying to regulate it but hand is far too labour intensive. I also find the cylinder mower with roller helps to keep the stalks flat even with verticutting. It’s almost easier to use a rotary first then cylinder after 🤦🏼‍♂️

Hi Austin, great series of posts. I am quite new to lawn care, and have over the last 4 year learned a tremendous about grass varieties, lawn care regimes, mowers etc.
I have just concluded that my premium Rye Grass mix from Rolawn is turning me into a slave for my lawn, having to overseed every year etc. I want my lawn and nature to work for me instead. So have decided to perhaps I need to start over with a Bent/Fescue mix instead, to get that stoloniferous lateral growth working for me, and hopefully no more overseeding every year.
Your exeperiment with the different seed mixes has been very useful indeed. I have only one question for you:
How well is your Fine 1 or more specifically Fine 2 area of the lawn doing with regards to preventing Poa after 2 years?
If I go ahead with my plan, I'll be saving up to get a Allett mower with a verticutter to assist in my grooming regime, and to hopefully get those solons cut and dense growth to follow, with no room for poa!!
    😃

Hi! Good to hear from you. Fescue & bent is a beautiful lawn at any height you choose. Better colour in the winter (no ryegrass winter die-back). But you need to have the thatch reduction equipment ready and germination is slow. That’s the worst time for Poa ingress.
