Pokémon is even bigger than it was 4 years ago now lmao with covid, collectibles have skyrocketed. Top loaders are sold out even. Funko pops. Anything.
I don't give a crap about Pokemon, but I don't care about MTG either. You're just an entertaining dude, do whatever you want Rudy. (like talk about retro game collecting too)
1000 dragonite boxes- 175 each 1000 mega gyra boxes- $150each 1000 charizard boxes-250 each. Assuming the cost was about $15 a box. That's actually insane. For roughly $45000 if rudy sold today would be worth $575000 yeesh
@@anthonycobb4867 Yeah he would. The idea with sealed investing is that you sell it back slowly when you're ready and it gives you passive income for a few years. Mind you in Rudy's case it'll be decades rather than years. He's also got his patrons which would help him unload faster than most.
I've watched this video at least a few times a month for like four years because I like watching the alpha videos for fun in any combination. It helps remind me why I started and people might not always be excited at the time. After all, there's nothing too exciting about a retail item at release. However, there is something exciting about a nostalgic set 5 years later still sealed in great condition like the day it was released. That's why we stay the course and ride out all the tacos both floppy and crunchy and anything in between lol.
Derium's Pokemon , Man How a bout when Charizards base set went from 50$ to like nothing ... I was like .. welp ,Im not to pressed about loosing the entire set ; now look !
I think one of the more interesting things with Pokemon is that a vast majority of their specialty products are standard legal. Pokemon considers promo reprints legal for standard, where as in MTG shit like Duel Decks, From the Vault, and Commander can't be used in standard. if Wizards made some rule like "This duel deck will be legal as long as the correlating block that the story is in is still in standard." IE: Nissa vs Ob should be BFZ legal, Blessed vs Cursed should be SOI legal, etc.
I'm interested in a 2020 update of this. Compared to the wild swing for MtG this year, where are these sets at and are they having production issues for new sets this year? Also, was this bullish activity in 2017 sustained to now or was it mostly driven by Pokemon Go? That's an interesting idea: how much does synergy drive value?
I'm a fan if Pokemon myself and I think its pretty cool how you're investing into something like this. I think a pretty good ex box to look for would probably be the Shiny Raquaza ex box. I believe it also has 1 or 2 roaring skies boosters. Its not out of print so it might not be something you are looking for but I think in time it will become more valuable along with some if the older ex boxes from previous sets, like you mentioned
Yeah, I thought it could be something like that. But even if some people get so easily distracted, repeating it once or maybe twice should be more than enough. And the funny thing is: most of the times he just repeats that he is going to say something crucial rather soon, not just the actual "core message" itself ;)
Noumenon1987 and to make it worse: He often forgets to say the crucial part! he seems to distract himself! (Or maybe it is on purpose, all part of his master plan)
It is not about emphasizing a point. He either doesnt realize how much he repeats himself as he circles around what he needs to say, or he is very aware and wants to stretch his videos for ad space. I'm going to lean towards the latter.
The comparison videos are really interesting too. Would like to see more direct comparing between the business models of different card games. Good stuff!
Damn... I could NOT hold back with that much stuff. I got two booster boxes of pokemon this month and we opened both haha. I'd really be interested if you start doing a few pokemon videos every once in a while
So... I'm no investor but I do notice things. I actually started MtG before Pokemon but I fell out of Pokemon overall (video games, tcg, anime, etc) because someone stole my Gameboy games in middle school. I clung to Magic because it was what I had left and it grew with my friends and community. I look back and I often think I would have a massive Pokemon collection instead of magic if my games were never stolen or if I didn't distance myself from it because of it. Getting older I am slowing significantly in my collecting of mtg and my interest in the new sets (though Amonkhet is tickling my history fancies) but Pokemon has recently become more enticing. Additionally I have come to realize many of the advantages of Pokemon such as the ease of play, the ability to redeem physical purchases online without an additional payment and that the pokemon themselves are almost universally relatable. I also noticed the incredible deals they have in these specialty products, from trainer boxes to the figure packs there's a lot more than what either magic or even yugioh offers. Tell me if I'm wrong but I think you are definitely on to something Rudy.
Very interested to see your Pokémon videos going forward. It's always felt like a stronger game than a lot of tcgs due to its age and I've noticed that it draws bigger crowds than a lot of games (locally only Magic and X-Wing seem to be more popular). Plus there's nostalgia as a factor as you mentioned.
sadly, pokemon does not have any mainstream, popular "eternal" type of format, closest thing is Expanded and that is from BW1 (2011) onwards, so a lot of the cards that were very powerful are not very valuable at all. However, most older sealed boxes are worth a lot because there are a lot of sealed product collectors.
I don't know anything about magic except what I've learned watching your videos. I've learned alot about collecting and valuing cards watching your videos. The fact that you have a couple videos about pokemon makes me happy. Also, when I got back into pokemon collecting, before I know anything about anything, I bought 36 blisters of pokemon evolutions from eBay. From alpha investments ironically enough! Good shit.
your videos are crazy informative. i play yugioh but almost all the topics you bring up are very relatable to all card games and the finances that go into to collecting cards and buying and selling. thanks man
Brother I really enjoy your channel. You’re articulate and informative, you have personality and camera presence. I’ve watched a ton of your videos, and I think that this one’’s my favorite. It was well explained and I really enjoyed the information. I’m a subscriber and I look forward to the next one. My mom was raised in Jacksonville and I still have a bunch of family there, I’m stoked to check out your shop when I come down there.
So I just recently got back into the pokemon tcg and I bought 2 of the Mew and Mewtwo super premium collection. I just wanted to know your opinion on larger special investment products like that since am holding on to one of them.
My understanding is that the card game tends to have a very large power creep, and they do devalue quite a lot, so I am unsure as to how investing into sealed products actually would work out.
I'm a MTG only guy, but it's good to keep an eye in anything besides your yard. I will prolly never deal with Pokemon, but it's still an interesting topic.
When Pokémon first came out, I brought 2 1st edition boxes to make a set, it cost me $170 and I sold the set for $1,000. Now if I didn't open the 1st edition boxes, that year Christmas on Ebay, each 1st edition unopened box sold for $3,000. $85 per box to $3,000 within a year!
The interesting thing about the box sets is, as of right now, there's two legitimate money games to play with them, especially at wholesale, mass quantities of buying. The short game, breaking them down to component pieces and just flipping them. Like Rudy mentioned, Statues a couple bucks each, codes up to a buck each (Who the hell is buying codes for a buck each? I wanna meet them, I got something they can buy), and packs are just free money at that point. The long game, where you hold on to boxes like people held on to Base Set, Jungle, etc, from the WotC run, and hope they hold the value like those original sets did, sealed. I'm more confident on the short game than the long game, especially while Roaring Skys is legal (Seriously, how many Shaymin are in that room right now? I shudder to think.)
In mtg the money is in singles and sealed product, but for pokemon unless your buying the oldest stuff the money is only in singles (specifically older ones). trust me
I have actually jumped ship from Magic to Pokemon. I love to collect these cards, which is something I didn't like to do with Magic. Also, the online version is pretty great. The cards are also pretty awesome and I love the diverse products that come out.
I have too. I genuinely think it's the better game now, even if XY Evolutions is a little weak. I've been spending the last few weeks trying to pick up Pokemon staples, and I've actually been brewing decks, something I haven't done in Magic since...oh god, I can't even remember it's so long. Time Spiral/Lorwyn era maybe. Minus a few rough spots, I think Magic was better up through New Phyrexia, then the whole thing went straight to shit. I still love *old* M:tG for sure, but WotC has really pushed me away as a customer.
Getting a code for packs is what drew me to Pokemon recently. Being able to play IRL then go home and hope online for a little bit and play more. I've been able in the last 2 month build super high competitive decks by just trading in the online game. Other card games really need to keep an eye on Pokemon because with the EX format and them getting some serious cards for competitive play this game is crazy good right now.
The revival set for Cardfight Vanguard looks like it has some pretty good value based on the reprints that are announced for it. They have announced several reprints on high value staples. Might be a good investment considering Bushiroad doesn't like to do reprints, for whatever reason. That being said it might not be a good long term investment if the set does well, Bushiroad might start doing reprints.
Rudy how do you value the promo code that comes with the Pokemon special products? If I'm not mistaken it can only be used for online products. Will the code even be valid in 5 years?
I'm really looking forward to your views on Pokemon Rudy, Growing up I played both Magic and pokemon (mostly for fun, never in any big tourneys). I still love watching people play magic but as far a my own collection goes, I ended up swaying towards pokemon! I love the specialty boxes and the art and just the cards as a whole. When it comes to casual playing I find the TCGO experience better in pokemon as well! I've been watching your magic videos for a while and will enjoy the same style of investment talk on Pokemon! thank you for sharing!
As someone who plays both quite frequently, this is the video that made me subscribe. Pokemon has the pack opening experience down to an art. Magic could learn a lot from it.
Rudy, 1)you can't afford 1000 of each product 2) those sets aren't worth shit as themselves 3) you are correct in your claim that a random product inside could spike at any point 4) you'd have to open the cases and part them out 5) you're better off buying booster boxes. Sealed boxes are worth the most. Promo cards aren't worth shit Charizard first edition base set is 40k psa10. Sealed first edition base boosters go for $1,200. Sealed booster boxes of first edition base, go for 100k. Nostalgia plus gen Y and millennials plus scarcity is insane.
Yeh the cost basis for Pokemon in those box sets is insane. You end up spending like 1.50 a pack after selling of the promos, codes, and etc. Then the packs themselves have a base value of about 1.15 even for the worst set not including your rare/foil slot. I know a few vendors who realized this early and made a killing, now all the vendors I do business with are moving into Pokemon. It's creating an interesting dynamic.
Rudy, I collect Pokemon and trust me keep the mythical collections and the charzard pikachu and blastois and Venusaur boxes for about a year more and they will skyrocket so fucking high you won't believe your eyes
I’d like to be able to buy in bulk. How can I go about getting so much because I’m more interested in the discounted prices that come with buying in bulk and avoid registering as a business
There are a few interesting pokemon recent pokemon sets that would surprise MTG people. From 2012 there are about 5 sets that have booster boxes that went up in value from $100 to $250-500.
I've still got 2 original charizards, 3 dark raichu, all NM. My local game store said the newer stuff sells better than the old and didn't offer much. I kept them.
To be honest, I have never meet a single person in my entire life who plays or has played Magic The Gathering. Half the people I grew up with played Pokemon.
Rudy, I started playing magic at the same time I started playing pokemon, the last time I played pokemon was in 2000, and I dont feel any nostalgia towards pokemon other than watch a few cartoon episodes of the first series. Magic and pokemon are two different beasts, there is many ways to feel nostalgic about pokemon without speding money on it (watching cartoons, playing videogames, even pokemon go helps a bit), magic has only one.
Pokémon Sun and Moon (VGC) / Pokémon XY Evolutions (TCG) beg to differ. www.ign.com/articles/2016/10/28/pokemon-sun-and-moon-are-nintendos-most-pre-ordered-games-ever
Rudy I totally agree with you! I was thinking the same thing before you made this video. Ever since the Pokemon company split from Wizards they totally evolved their product while Wizards really hasn't done anything special.
Did you buy them in Pallet Town???
LOL
Brayden Fath Comedy.
Brayden Fath boo
Brayden Fath damn nice one
Gotem"... catch em all. Smile.
Rudy, who is your favorite starter Pokémon???? Do you like mega evolutions? What's my grandson's name again?
This guy^^
Prof, I love you.
God bless you sir
prof*-*
Damnit man, your the reason I got back into this game! Haha
Not so funny now to everyone who was talking shit. This video definitely aged appropriately.
Pokémon is even bigger than it was 4 years ago now lmao with covid, collectibles have skyrocketed. Top loaders are sold out even. Funko pops. Anything.
Twelve minutes in, and I still can't find the Kaladesh Inventions box.
Tyler Palmese Alpha Revolt?
He spent it all on the Pokemon...
It's full of Shaymin EX now.
I don't give a crap about Pokemon, but I don't care about MTG either. You're just an entertaining dude, do whatever you want Rudy. (like talk about retro game collecting too)
Boy, this video has aged incredibly well.
Very well!
Very Well
Very well 👏
Very VERY well
Yes it has
Charizard ex box $225 now. Was $25 back then.
1000 dragonite boxes- 175 each
1000 mega gyra boxes- $150each
1000 charizard boxes-250 each.
Assuming the cost was about $15 a box. That's actually insane.
For roughly $45000 if rudy sold today would be worth $575000 yeesh
Wouldn't he have to slowly unload? To not impact the market value? I always wondered about that
@@anthonycobb4867 Yeah he would. The idea with sealed investing is that you sell it back slowly when you're ready and it gives you passive income for a few years. Mind you in Rudy's case it'll be decades rather than years. He's also got his patrons which would help him unload faster than most.

Oh, I will! I'll still stop by here time to time to be in awe of Rudy's sealed collection though... *drools*
I want to take Derium out for drinks...
good stuff
Derium's Pokemon , Man How
a bout when Charizards base set went from 50$ to like nothing ... I was like .. welp ,Im not to pressed about loosing the entire set ; now look !
Derium's Pokemon told me to come and check this video out cool
Very happy you are covering Pokemon. I have been heavily investing in Pokemon for a good decade, very similar to your timeline with Magic.
do you think modern pokemon cards will be able to hold value like older cards have done over the years?
Yes. 5 to 7 years hold sealed product
You are rich now huh
Yes
I don't know who made pokemon go, but we should get them to make pokemon go to the polls
I literally wanted to kill myself after I heard that
TMFaster And vote Trump! ; )
Eh, no.

I am glad I am not the only one who noticed this.... Rudy is an expert in spreading a 5 minute story out over 25 minutes
Noumenon1987 It's a rhetorical strategy, emphasizing your point as people often get distracted and stop paying attention at some points in a speech

Happy to see the integration, always was curious about pokemon poking its head up with the large amount of varied products in the last few years.
Loves watching this and seeing how right you where 4 years later. Love you creepy Rudy a true legend

It's 2018 and he opened these boxes, not all of them but he did.
how did you order pallets of pokemon cards can you tell me how
I would love to see your warehouse. It must be huge with all the pallets you buy
How much inventory is a pallet?
its alot what you see in this video is probebly a pallet
How much are your gains on those pallets specifically, from when this video was made, until Nov 2020?

Where do you store all your boxes if you tend not to sell?
Well you selling them yet?

What do you do to address storage? Of course, no identifying info, but do you lease a warehouse or something?
So I just recently got back into the pokemon tcg and I bought 2 of the Mew and Mewtwo super premium collection. I just wanted to know your opinion on larger special investment products like that since am holding on to one of them.
Hey Rudy, can you make a storage tour and show where and how you storage all those boxes? Thanks, keep doing great videos!!
My understanding is that the card game tends to have a very large power creep, and they do devalue quite a lot, so I am unsure as to how investing into sealed products actually would work out.
Rudy how do I buy some sun and moon booster pack boxes from you?
I'm a MTG only guy, but it's good to keep an eye in anything besides your yard. I will prolly never deal with Pokemon, but it's still an interesting topic.
where did you get your pokemon pallets from

Where do you buy the boxes in wholesale?
The interesting thing about the box sets is, as of right now, there's two legitimate money games to play with them, especially at wholesale, mass quantities of buying.
The short game, breaking them down to component pieces and just flipping them. Like Rudy mentioned, Statues a couple bucks each, codes up to a buck each (Who the hell is buying codes for a buck each? I wanna meet them, I got something they can buy), and packs are just free money at that point.

Those mythical boxes are now $100. Crazy return.
Deckbuilder's toolkits definitely have multiple packs from different sets. In fact, the Kaladesh or Eldritch Moon ones had BFZ, OGW, SOI and EMN.
just curious whats with the trunk shaker bass drop at the start of each video? PS glad you're doing Pokemon content moving forward.
whats your favorite kind of card sleeves
How do you buy a pallet!?!?! Plz help
They used to have mixed packs of magic. They used to have the old throwback group packs at walmart.
MTG needs to do these specialty boxes if they want to be on par with Pokémon.
what would be your suggestion for getting rid of and UNL Black Lotus?
I have actually jumped ship from Magic to Pokemon. I love to collect these cards, which is something I didn't like to do with Magic. Also, the online version is pretty great. The cards are also pretty awesome and I love the diverse products that come out.
George McBain I'm another such person. The Pokémon online version is so much better than mtgo is why I switched
I have too. I genuinely think it's the better game now, even if XY Evolutions is a little weak. never go full timmy :(
How or where you buy pallets?
Hey how do you get the at 11?
The lowest I get them is 16 to 18
Where do you get the space to store all of your product? It must cost more than the cards themselves.

Rudy's finally lost it.
Rudy, should I sell my PSA 10 1st edition-HOLO Fossil Articuno on ebay now or sit on it for a while longer?
So, would pokemon be a better entry point for investing in trading cards?
Alpha Investments: Click for the piles of old Magic boxes, stay to learn about finances and investing.
CP6 japanese booster box are good to hold? considering there is a base set holo in everypack.
Outside of Japan, the demand for it won't be that high. A lot of the other japanese booster sets do not sell for that high outside of japan
As someone who plays both quite frequently, this is the video that made me subscribe. Pokemon has the pack opening experience down to an art. Magic could learn a lot from it.
How do you feel about Heroclix? Ive been interested in it for a month or so, wondering if those figures wil hold any value.
Where do you store them, Rudy? Storage places?
Rudy, 1)you can't afford 1000 of each product 2) those sets aren't worth shit as themselves 3) you are correct in your claim that a random product inside could spike at any point 4) you'd have to open the cases and part them out 5) you're better off buying booster boxes. watching this after the pokemon bathroom video lol
good time to get in, if you wait too long Derium will open all of the product.
what distributor do you buy your pokemon from?
Do you still have this stuff??
Rudy, I collect Pokemon and trust me keep the mythical collections and the charzard pikachu and blastois and Venusaur boxes for about a year more and they will skyrocket so fucking high you won't believe your eyes
Great advice
are you only doing English poke cards or will you diversify with Japanese cards as well?

How has it gone?
Rudy, I started playing magic at the same time I started playing pokemon, the last time I played pokemon was in 2000, and I dont feel any nostalgia towards pokemon other than watch a few cartoon episodes of the first series. Magic and pokemon are two different beasts, there is many ways to feel nostalgic about pokemon without speding money on it (watching cartoons, playing videogames, even pokemon go helps a bit), magic has only one.
But i am not saying its not a good investiment today, But i wouldnt rely on the nostalgia effect that magic have.
Pokémon Sun and Moon (VGC) / Pokémon XY Evolutions (TCG)
beg to differ. www.ign.com/articles/2016/10/28/pokemon-sun-and-moon-are-nintendos-most-pre-ordered-games-ever
Rudy I totally agree with you! I was thinking the same thing before you made this video. Ever since the Pokemon company split from Wizards they totally evolved their product while Wizards really hasn't done anything special.
Are you wanting to see if the value of the packs in the specialty products of Pokémon go up before you sell them?
Rudy what's your view on the ufs tcg.
