    I have owned the Mark 3 for a couple of years now and I agree with the assesment. It's the best camera, digital or analog, that I've ever owned ( over a 50 year period of owning professional cameras). In fact, I traded in a full frame A7 for the Mk3 and haven't regretted it. The lens is fantastic. Yes there are some focus issues but they're not hard to work around and I dont notice them any more. That said, I would like to give the MKIV a try because I've heard they fixed the minor focus issues.Plus there are some other features that sound interesting. But at $1700? It's going to be hard for me to afford that so I guess I'll just plug along with the MK3 until the V comes out. Of course that means the camera will be even farther out of reach. Then that's the time probably to buy the IV!

      Hi . its diffucult really as the rx10iv as amazing as it is in normal every day use it will struggle to a degree. i have used it upto iso 1000 in dull light and with a little tweak in photoshop if needed with the noise control. just keep its iso between iso 64-400 generally i shoot 95% of the time at iso 100 defo its sweet spot. its a tiny sensor so just bare that in mind it isnt designed to replace a dslr or larger mirrorless its to work next to it. i have the a7r2 and today the a7r3 aswell as the rx10iv . my rx10iv is for wildlife and action and every day snapping where the other 2 are for super high quality no compromise work. hope that helped a little. you might find though that the forest during the day might not be as dull as you think.

    How is the EVF like on this camera? I don't hear alot about it. I have an RX100 V which apparently the video quality looks identical to this RX10 IV but the viewfinder is quite small even though its a good quality one, but it makes sense cause the RX100 V is small. But the RX10 IV looks so amazing, and it can do like everything and I want to use it for general photography especially macro. I know it's not true 1:1 but it's really compelling

    • @sjm.photos

      video quality is very similar on the rx100 but minus the huge wide to zoom lens which aids massive difference in image quality and bokeh etc. the evf is pretty good not quite big enough really but very useable still. with macro is great at 600mm and it has a 72cm minimum so really good for insects etc. and you can focus to the sunhood at 24mm wide so also great for close up wide angles. also. i love the camera even 5 years down the line

      slightly less depth of field due to sensor not being quite as big as an apsc sensor. also there is evidence of noise above iso 400-1000+ but once you get to know the camera and expose well for each situation its fine. the 600mm is awesome to have and the camera is sooooooo useable as an everyday camera. all depends if you want something you can pick up and go or you are happy changing lenses. i have the a7r3 also and the rx10iv i have captured more chance photos than ever because there is no lens swapping i keep it at iso 100 as much as possible and its brilliant in good light. go play with one if you can before you buy.

      You even have 4K with 720mm with an even smaller sensor for about 400$ in Panasonic compact cameras! That's probably not the point why to buy a bridge camera that is almost 4 times the prize of its class! :D
      And you have to keep in mind this small 1" sensor. Depending what you like to take pictures of you might be better off with an APS-C camera or a MFT (or FF if you prefer this)! :P

    • @sjm.photos
      @sjm.photos  Před 6 lety

      the rx10iv walks all over a £450 panasonic compact i know my sister has a tx90 which is a great camera but extremely limited . the huge difference between the rx10iv and that is it has f2.4-f4 where the panasonic has f3.5 -f8 so very difficult shooting in anything but good light. the rx10iv just works. and its convenient compared to swapping lenses over all the time when by then you have missed the photo. nothing is perfect but the rx10iv is a 8-9 out of 10. the features it has inside and how fast it focuses and tracks stuff and the 24fps bursts mean you miss only one or 2 images every now and then but because its shooting so fast you didnt miss it at all. well worth every penny it costs.

    • @MusikPiratCH
      @MusikPiratCH Před 6 lety

      Why should I use the RX10iv? The limited 1" sensor doesn't allow me to shoot in low light (there I'd probably take a FF camera). For Wildlife an APS-C and so on. To spend that much money for a Bridge Camera seems crazy to me.
      On travels I might be better off with a much smaller camera! So at least for me I see no use for the RX10iv! :P

      the a9 came just before the rx10iv did so im guessing the same will also happen so if you can wait i would and see what they release. i miss hardly anything with the rx10iv its range 24-600 f2.4 to f4 allows so much and imagine the time wasted swapping lenses over from a wide angle to large zoom lens you miss the shot. also 1kg so can take it everywhere :) anyway i cant believe this video is still being watched. thankyou

    How do you compare this model with the previous RX10ii in terms of image quality (both, photo and video)? I really prefeer a 2.8 f camera with ND filters that 600 mm zoom (I reality Sony need many zoo) but only if the quality of sensor, lens and processing is on the same league. My priorities are in orden: photo and 4k (and slow motion /time lapse quality) for potrait and landscape 2.- Autofocus (obviosuly M104 win here) and only later 3. Zoom... If the video 4k/slow motion /timelapse quality its equal, And both cameras are equally capable for landscspe, potrait and some of street photography, by the price Rx10ii is enough to me... Have you try both cameras?

      It all depends on your useage what do you do and what do you need. do you need a camera that allows changeable lenses with more options i bought the rx10iv as a 2nd/ 3rd camera that i can pick up and use any time instead of carrying a bigger bag with lots of lenses etc. i have the a7r2 and a6300 for work the rx10iv even though its a back up for me its also a camera i pick up and take with me everywhere just incase i see something worth photographing or videoing . i hope that helped. the rx10iv is awesome but it is limited by its sensor size for lowlight (video uploading now about its lowlight performance) also limited by its sensor size for noise levels and depth of field isnt anywhere as near as a full frame sensor for example. still it does so much and works so well. it is defo worth trying out to see if you like it. it has 2 bits i dont like 1 the touch screen i dont get on with. and it cant zoom back out forward whilst you are focus locked so you have to let off to zoom out or in which ive now got used to so not a biggy hopefully they will do a firmware update.

But in low light... bye bye 1 inch sensor can not help you. I wanna buy it also is a great camera and you forget lens but is not for everything and noy super professional. could be usefull for sports, wild, some macro and more. but you can't do high resolution pictures or things like that. you have a good point but when the sensor gets bigger so will the lens and the camera will have to become bigger. the rx10iv is designed to do well in most conditions and it does at iso 64-1000 with zero issues. it cant keep up with a 1dx but it did do rather well and for what it is and how big it is and as we know its not always about the kit its about being in the right place at the right time and getting the shot and the rx10iv allows that . ive taken more shots recently that i just wouldnt of captured using a dslr or mirrorless because by the time you have changed lenses etc the moment has gone. and thats what it is about.

    Hi Stuart. Great video, thank you. Just two things. 1. The image used at the start and finish state it has a 28-600mm lens not a 24-600mm. 2. You state that you can use it in the rain. Is this really true? Thank you again for such a brilliant video. I'm subscribed!

      Thanks to Stuart for a great review, accompanied by some great photos. I just received an RX10iv, upgrading from the RX10iii, and am still learning the new camera's tricks.
      Regarding the second question here, about using the camera in the rain: I recently used the RX10iii on a trip in which I ended up carrying it around for several hours, mostly uncovered, in unanticipated bucketing-down rain. I was trying to shelter the camera a bit, but that was kind of impossible, so I decided to put the "water resistant" claim to the test.
      It worked fine for two or three hours of this treatment, still taking good pictures when I could get under some cover, while I and my companions were getting absolutely soaked. (The hot-shoe cover was in place.) Finally, the camera started to misbehave: it was telling me that an unrecognized accessory was attached (water got into the hot-shoe area, presumably), and later was telling me that the camera was in all sorts of crazy modes, though I hadn't moved the mode dial (water getting into that control, I guess). At that point, I popped out the battery and gave up on any further photography that day. The next day, the camera was still going into crazy modes at times, but then suddenly it came back to normal, started taking excellent pictures again, and I have seen no problems since then.
      So, water-resistant, but there is a limit. And, in my case, no long-term damage even after such abuse. Your mileage may vary. I wouldn't feel bad about using this camera in a gentle rain for a short time, if necessary.
      OK, that's the model iii and not the iv, but I think in this respect the cameras will probably be identical.

      @sjm.photos  Před 6 lety

      hi Scott thanks for the comment :) i had a similar issue with the a7r2 and have had the hotshoe replaced due to salt water getting on the contacts which did exactly the same did crazy things and messages this accessory not supported. i have used everything ive had in heavy rain konika minolta 7d, a700, a900, a77,a99, a7r, a6300 and a7r2 and only ever had 1 issue the hot shoe getting wet. i even dropped the a99 into a rock pool completely submerged for a few seconds. and it carried on working . and with much alcohol wipes later when home never gave me an issue. :) hope you enjoy the new rx10iv :)

    Your one of the better camera vlogs -- you give real info and not just hyperbole. I am about to go on a 3 month motorcycle trip to South America. I suffer from camera overload. I have a a7rii, RX100 iv and even an iphone X. So which to bring on my trip where I have very little space to carry. Biggest issue is low light shots -- which lens to carry with me because of weight and size. Bugs me :). So after your video I'm thinking of bringing a RX10IV because of the lens range for most landscape shots -- and bring a a7rii with either a 35mm 2.8 or 55mm 1.8 for night time low light, portrait and for lightweight shots -- just an iphone. I hate weight generally when walking around in adventure travel situations. Further, if you bring out a beast of a camera and lens in these small remote towns -- the subjects get upset and overwhelmed. Any thoughts?

      @sjm.photos  Před 6 lety +2

      the rx10iv for big zoom to take discreet photos of people at hip level with screen facing up is ideal. the low light performance for night time landscapes ie light trails and stars it is very good at f2.4 at 24-35mm ideal for that. and iso for milkyway etc fine for upto iso 3200 with some noise reduction later on via photoshop. turn off in body noise reduction for long exposures because it applies after each shot and takes about the same time again to do it. i am a a7r2 user aswell and for work its nuts for quality and sharpness with the great lenses available but the rx10iv for a all rounder is just amazing i pick it up daily over the a7r2 just because its so quick and easy to use captures sharp presise images once you learn which focus setting to use for each moment etc. yes it could be less noisy and the sensor is small but thats what makes the camera so good its only a 1 kg camera 24-600mm and has tonnes of features. if it was me i would take the rx10iv . yes you might find a few shots would have been better done on the a7r2 but you wont be carrying an a7r2 a 24mm, a 50mm a 70-200mm and a 150-600mm lens. its all about the way we use the cameras not actually how good they are . i have taken shots with the rx10iv that i could of never got with the a7r2. and at the end of the day its about getting the photo taken and being creative. and pixal peeping is over rated when do we really ever zoom in that close ? most of the time we may crop a bit then maybe print it and view it at the full image. so to get a crap photo looking good is difficult but if you take a good photo on any good camera it will look awesome. its all about what is available to you at that moment. and if you have 24-600mm at f2.4 to f4 and good quality at iso64- iso 3200 with a tad of noise reduction if needed. should i say more lol.

    Hei, I’m wondering if this camera is good and sharp enough for nature/landscape shooting? I’m not a photographer so I don’t have very high demanding for the photo quality, but the quality should be reasonable (at least better than the smartphone:-) ) Currently I have Nikon d810 with a 24-70 nikkor lens, but it always too heavy to carry it out with some quick shoots, sometimes I also feel a 24-70 lens is not enough to shoot the landscape....Sony r
    X10 m4 looks like a good option for me due to the 24mm to 600mm range

    Thank you for this great review. I have recently bought this as a walk around camera when I want more flexibility than that offered by the A7R4. I absolutely loved it and was amazed at the quality. However, it let me down badly last night. I attempted to talk a picture of the train of lights at night. I pre focused on the spot when I knew it would emerge. I used a wider open aperture and an ISO of 3200. It was hand held. However, as iI started shooting on high burst mode, it froze and shut down. I completely missed the shot. Do you think this is a fault with the camera, SD card or user error?

    I have been buying many used cameras to understand what I can get, and I just bought a fujifilm x-a10 for 200 dollars and it has really beautiful pixels/noise/grains. Some cameras produce pictures that look really ugly when you zoom in . I took two pictures with the a10, one large and one small, 16mp and 4mp. and I could not tell any difference between them unless I zoomed in to see pixels. That was really eyeopening for me. A good camera has almost nothing to do with pixels. I have a Fuji HS10 that I used a lot for photographing nature in Lofoten for later doing paintings and its really sad that the quality of the image is not good enough for printing larger prints. I realized too late that on pixel level it was ugly and mushy. Even an old canon 20D that I got for 50 dollars is better. I wanted a RX10 but everyone was saying its not good enough so I kept looking, and I think the Lumix G9 might be close to a perfect camera because of its wonderful stabilization. Listening to you and looking at the fantastic pictures you take I realize I have been misled and that this camera is the best I can get for what I do in Lofoten.

    • @sjm.photos
      @sjm.photos  Před 6 lety

      i looked at this in a logical way the lens is f2.4 at 24mm and the aperture doesnt actually move the lens gets longer the aperture becomes the equivalent of f4 due to less light coming into the lens. so its only the fact the lens gets longer it becomes an f4 . but its very useable an still get great shots from it. if it were to be an f2.4 or f2.8 through the range the camera would be massive so sony obviously looked at it and decided it was the best way forward. i love the camera it performs so well and is for me a pick up and go camera where i can get amazing shots easily without carrying 6 lenses and the a7r2 or now my new A7r3 . hope that helps
