  • Fraternizer's Hymn (I'm Dreaming Of Home) was composed by Philippe Rombi for the movie Joyeux Noël (2004). It is performed by the boys' choir Libera.
    On December 24, 1914, with no orders from superiors, German, British (Scottish), and French soldiers across the Western Front put down their weapons and celebrated Christmas together. It is called “The Christmas Truce of 1914.” It was not a unanimous event. In fact, there was still fighting going on in certain sections. Nevertheless, about 100,000 German and British soldiers took part in the ceasefires. The truce lasted for almost 2 days. It has never happened again to that extent.
    The troops met in the middle of no man’s land. They would share drinks and food, show family pictures and family stories, talk about themselves and their dreams for after the war, exchange addresses, and ask for letters to be delivered to loved ones caught on the “wrong side” of the line. They would also sing Christmas carols and shared in communal Christmas Masses.
    Troops also decided to use the time to bury their dead and, in a few cases, to exchange prisoners.
    One of the most memorable events that took place were the games they played. There were card games, chess games, and, of course, football (soccer) games.
    At the end of the truce, all troops returned to their trenches with a new appreciation of their counterparts. They all had the same love of life, freedom, country, and love of family. They all had dreams of a peaceful future. But most importantly, they all wanted to go home.

    A little over 105 years ago, men who had been sent to fight in the most destructive conflict in human history up till then, got out of their trenches and for a brief moment, saw the guys on the other side, not as enemies, but as fellow human beings. A truly beautiful moment.

      Shalom Mike, if only the upper ones could have the idea to let some of their men decide by a footballgame about their conflicts instead of sending them to kill each other, there would probably be less too early grief in the world. But unfortunately such photos like those in the beginning were the proofs that led to the punishment of all the involved soldiers (not only the officiers, the germans e.g. alltogether including their OLt. have been transferred to the eastern front.), so the lower ranks were more reasonable than the higher ones...

      Not really the first time.
      There were a few moments during the American CV evil war similar to this, whether it was dropping off a few supplies of coffee or tobacco after a battle or a little truce during a battle that raged so intensely it caused a fire in the wilderness, leading to a scramble to save their own skin and the wounded.
      There was even a confederate and a union soldier one winter found dead, clutching each other in a futile attempt to stay warm.
      Heck, TAPS was created when a union officer whose done who had joined up with the confederates found a poem his son had written on his body. Given the opposing sides, he was denied a military honor guard, but was allowed a bugler to play over his grave, giving birth to TAPS.

      Shalom Jennifer, honestly, I'm not so sure about if this local truce was the only one initialized by lower ranks. There's a story running , that in Stalingrad the sending back of a soldier who had been catched fallen asleep instead of sending him to a pow-camp led to a sort of local truce for 1 or 2 days too. But I haven't seen any photos proving it thus far... Maybe the subordinates knew how the comrades in WWI had been punished for their truce, so in WWII in Stalingrad they made sure that the upper ranks would not get informed about it... Wise men !

    Never let someone say things like "real men used to go to war, unlike today". The men who were in the Trenchs on Christmas of 1914 showed that true human nature isn't about waging war...it's about wanting peace.
    Let war only ever happen for when peace must be restored, until the day when it is no longer needed. We will always have conflicts with one another...but that doesn't mean you can't remember their human...just like you.

    I can't help to believe that the men who still believed in humanity and crossed their "red lines" to extend a hand of friendship knew more than what their leaders thought they did. I wish they could have all laid down their weapons and walked away. It would have sent such a resounding message to the world - "NO, we are not doing this." But they are friends forever, in heaven. Those who in the emptiness of their hearts want war and control over others are probably still fighting each other in hell. They could have so much more if they would just let go of their pride.

    Let's no have another war like that in human history again.no one wins the war.we don't fight to kill our enemies,we fight to protect ou love ones that we left behind us(mom,father,son,daughter and siblings).old are the one who create wars ,and youngs has to die in battlefield.in peace son bury father, but in war father burry their sons.war doesn't prove anything.but left a misery,destruction,violation, hatred,futility,pain and suffering.it takes away someone's father or someone's sons,someone's brother.

      Shalom D'Tuto! Well, I always thaught it was an old scottish traditional until I saw @ the end of this clip "Composed by Philippe Rombi for the movie Joyeux Noël (2004)", so this song was in fact made by a french man hundred years after the event. Lol!

    I enjoy this song but it has some messups.... During 1914 (The Beginning of World War 1/The Christmas Truce) Neither side wore helmets but rather wore Caps or leather Caps like the German Picklehaube and M1907 Field Cap and British Trench Cap issued to recruits and officers.

    • @JamesHawkins54
      @JamesHawkins54  Před 3 lety +1

      But these are real pictures of the Christmas Truce. Of course I also included pictures from other wars.

    • @flamingfrancis
      @flamingfrancis Před 3 lety

      James' older photographs bear this out. Yes, they wore leather caps but the Pickelhaube in particular was a shaped leather helmet that was adorned with the top spike which was originally brass and also had a brass shield piece located on the front. This was pre the days of helmet grade special steels so what you see is leather peices cut to shapes and then moulded / sewn in the shape of the crown of the head.
      Our ANZAC soldiers (bless them all) wore a distinguished slouch hat with the turned up left side brim and often featured a large feather, especially for members of the famous Light Horse Brigades.
      For two nations that could not be further away from the Western Front the ANZACS lost well over 70,000 young men in these conflicts....RIP to them and all.

      @@JamesHawkins54 As far as I know it depended on the situation what their Lt.s ordered. They had to wear what their officers decided. But your photos are truly the real ones and exactly such photos were the proofs the higher ranking officers needed to punish their subordinates for this truce without orderly leave, unfortunately.

    I am Polish and I have lost a lot of my family at the hands of the Germans, but I have tears in my eyes when German soldiers depart in cattle cars and sing the melody of Scottish colleagues, whom they have an absolute order to shoot after reaching a new location. Every war is stupid and pointless. It only brings suffering to peaceful people. Like now in Ukraine

    The fact that this entire story is about how pointless war is yet half of the video shows pictures of volunteers who go to war into foreign countries for their own profit makes it kind of weird...

    • @JamesHawkins54
      @JamesHawkins54  Před rokem +1

      Most did not know why they were going to war. Some out of a misguided sense of patriotism; some because their friends were going and they did not want to be left behind; some because they thought it would be exciting; some because it would bring honor to them and their families and many other reasons. But I doubt that most of them served for profit. A vast majority of them expected that the war would be very short and they would be home by Christmas. They did not understand the horror war is. They had seen so many of their family and friends needlessly killed By Christmas, the knew that they did not understand what the war was for. Of course, I am saying this about the lower ranks which this video depicts. Thank you for your comment.

      I understand that. I just wanted to point out that for many of the lower ranks, they did not really understand what they were getting themselves into... even today many just want peace.
