I keep interpretating the lyric as a tought of dying soldier in no man's land. Far away from home, dying in stranger's country with no hope to be burried in their homeland, all they can do is just "forever dreaming of home"

Being a ww2 reenactor in Italy, I have been to numerous War cemeteries from both the Axis and the Allied side...
Each time I hear this song, my thoughts run to those poor boys from all nations who died so far away from their homes...

Isn't the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland still a country? The UK. The Union flag is still used.
Read closely: Great Britain and * Ireland *; this song is referencing WWI, which fell into the period when the UK was officially under that title. The Union Jack was only in service for that nation-state until 1927, when it ceased to exist in favor of the UK of Great Britain and * Northern * Ireland.

@@hi_-bz7wf Nope, but I assess the usage of flags based on their specific country/organization. The flag remained, but the “United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland” ceased to exist.

Personally I prefer the one showcased in the video. As you said though, any companies, say (our) / the English football team will wear the red and white shirt.
