- The massed pipes & drums march through Ballater in Royal Deeside, Scotland, to start the 2018 Ballater Highland Games.
The parade is led by Drum Major Ian Esson and the bands were Ballater & District Pipe Band, Towie Pipe Band, Ellon & District RBL Pipe Band, Kintore Pipe Band and Dalhousie Pipe Band from Switzerland. (2 others to be confirmed) Drum Majors included Bert Summers, Bill Barclay, Derek Dean, Roland Stewart, Robert Brownfield, Fiona Glennie...
After the parade through the town to Monaltrie Park, Ballater, the flag is raised and the Drum Majors salute the games committee.
My grandfather told me that his home town, Tilburg in the Netherlands, was liberated by the Scottish. The first thing they heard in November 1944 was a bagpipes in the far distance a very soft humming sound that came nearer. He told me that everybody went outside to see where the sound was coming from. There the Scottish arrived to officially liberate the city. My grandfather always held very dear memories to the Scots who liberated him, his family, his community, the city where I live. We're still very grateful and associate the bagpipes with liberation and freedom.
Beautiful story ,lest we forget the brave men and woman who fought for the freedom we have now
Great story
Truly moving story. It creates a beautiful image and somehow gives me joy.
Best wishes from Germany.

Yes, the bagpipes make me feel so close to GOD. As an American I can say thank you Scotland. Whenever I was in the presence of bagpipes, it was proceeded by a gust of wind. This means our heavenly father loves the bagpipes!

@s H Lmao where??? U talking about the Scottish government where one of their main driving ideologies is Scottish nationalism, and they've got Muslims in Scotland wearing tartan at weddings, etc.
@s H Scotland is one of the most highly patriotic and nationalistic countries I know of, the fact you have brought Sinn Fein into this shows you have underlying grievances you'r not telling us. The SNP's main goal is to restore Scottish sovereignty and promote Scottish culture, they have reorganised the Scottish education system so children are taught proper Scots history and not rubbish like the tudors, normans, King Arthur, etc which is taught elsewhere in the UK. Everywhere you go now there is Gaelic on road signs, on police, fire and ambulance vehicles - this is the SNP pushing this.
No one denied any made up services so made up spear throwers and sandal wearing bombers can get them first, you're just making stuff up to push your deluded agenda.
Cheers..

How can you not gets goosebumps every time you hear "Scotland the Brave" on the pipes! Love from 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I'm of Scottish descent and love the sound of the pipes and even had a piper play at my dad's funeral in 1987, but I have to be honest and say "Scotland The Brave" is not one of my favorite tunes. Just my own tastes, of course. I'm perfectly fine with somebody else regarding it as one of their favorites.
My family escaped to America in the 1750's, from the British, the sound of bag pipes brings tears to me also. It could be because of all those that died so my family could escape and live to someday return to Scotland. A lot of brave Scots gave their lives to protect my family, the Royal Stewart's of Scotland . I pray that soon Scotland will be free!
@Old Luke Is this the Scottish version of " Love your enemies?" 😀
@Talorc MacAllan , here is something that might give you a laugh. My daughter was doing research on our ancestors and came across the song, " MY BONNIE LIES OVER THE OCEAN." Now if this song was about Prince Charles Edward Stewart, why would it say, " My Bonnie lies over the ocean."
He was exiled in Italy... NOW HERE IS THE FUNNY PART...
My daughter suspects that the song is about one of our ancestors... One who was here in Kentucky by 1750', (Walter Stewart) and others came in the 1780's or the 1790's.I'm not so sure about this meaning of the song. Is it possible that they had "code songs"? Then again there's the ship captain named Cameron that supposedly snuck out Prince Charles Edward Stewarts son as a baby claiming the baby as his.
IF you have any information on this it would be really interesting to find out the truth on the song. And to see if my daughter was right. She was before, in grade school, she said that Prince William and Prince Harry was cousins. Diana is a direct descendant of Mary Queen of Scots.
@@thedukeofskull1383 the version I remember is...
My bonnie lies over the ocean
My bonnie lies over the sea
My daddy lies over my mummy
And that's how the fuckers got me.

My dad was the Pipe Sgt. of The San Francisco Highlanders in the early 1960's and then he became Pipe Mgr. of The Sierra Highlanders in Reno where he lived until his untimely passing in 1981. This grabs me from so far inside my heart words can't describe my inner feelings when i hear Scottish Pipes, when he died i got his skindo which was made by my grandfather whom i barely knew, it was stolen from me a short time later & to this day some year later as im now 63, he was 52 at the time of his death, but it still pisses me off to no end with a one of a kind in the world and gone in a minute.
Skeendoo is a phonetic spelling, in Scots Gaelic it is Sgain dubh, 'black knife'.
im an english man living Scotland and i love all things Scottish , especially the pipes , they have a lot to be proud of !
they were not invented in Scotland though, they were invented by celtic tribes who originated in central Europe, bagpipes are used in several European folk music traditions it's just the Scots who have used them the most
Nice one Andy, if you love Scotland, it will love you. :)
@@Retrospective.
i wouldn't want to be anywhere else.
thanks
I am Turkish. I love Scottish culture and have great respect for the Scottish people and history.
Much respect from Kenya. Uniqueness unparalleled. The accompanying bagpipes 👌
Ballater is a beautiful wee town and their Highland games are a wonderful family day out. I was lucky enough to be there for the 2015 games and I’ll never forget the sound of the massed pipes and drums as they approached my vantage point on the Main Street. When I hear the pipes, I can’t help but think of my Great Grandfather who followed their sound ‘over the top’ at the battle of the Somme, only to return wounded and missing his closest friends.
The leader of the march looks so heroic! The proud way he carries himself. Fierce and ready to lead his troupe to battle. I get goose bumps watching this.
He's a band leader not a warrior. He square gaits the whole way, see how he's out of sync with the other leaders? You clearly never served in the military love, infantry are the warriors, we know how to march, he's just a musician in fancy dress.
@@darkjudge8786 Just let them enjoy it, good lad.
@@darkjudge8786 I was thinking the same thing watching this. The one guy that was completely out of step / off time,.. was the one in the front,.. "leading" them all. The man behind him was on spot.
@@darkjudge8786 Ir would be ice to just allow people to enjoy, and not be criticized.
I'm not Scottish, but who doesn't love the bagpipes.
i still love the sound off the pipes and drums and the the pipe major as well richard
I have traveled to many places in this world, but by far, my favorite vacation was the British Isles. Scotland in particular. Could there be anything more soul stirring than listening to bagpipes? I plan to go back someday!! 🤞
All the way from Thailand from a Brit but it brings tears to my eyes. I love the sound of a bagpipe band.
Wonderful! My Gran, a proud Farquharson is buried down the road from here in an old ruined church. She had the pipes for her funeral. They are for every occasion. Ballater, such a wonderful place. I remember when a funeral drove through the town ever single person stopped what they were doing, bowed their heads for a brief moment as the procession passed. Probably many were strangers, but it mattered not. It’s not something I had ever seen being from England.
I’m English but my dad in the early 70s used to play this in the front room marching up and down while mum was at Bingo and I fell in love with the sound .
My god it gives me goosebumps every time I hear it it’s in my blood for sure and it also bring tears to my eyes I don’t know why but it does
I am an American with Scottish ancestry and I love watching this video and LOVE listening to the bagpipes. I can't tell you how many times I have watched your video! LOVE IT!!
