Pigment powders from model companies are a fantastic tool, and worth the cost in many cases. There is an awesome, much cheaper, alternative that gives you more colour variety though. Using chalk pastels to make your own pigment powder on demand is a great option for for hobbyists and model makers.

I've been reading fart quest with my 6 year old and he has been loving it! Such a fun read.
Dunno if you've ever been, but I suggest a trip to a chiropractor. I work a physical job and mine has been a life saver.
At my worst I was crawling to get around my house, pulling on pants and socks with an unfurled metal coat hanger, and my chiropractor got me up and dancing (figuratively, not literally. Me dancing is suuuper ugly.) again in no time flat.
Hope ya feel better soon, bud.
You should of taken a few more days and just let everyone know you are recovering. Health first man I’m sure we would all wait knowing you are recovering from hurting your back.
I was wondering what he’d done with a snow blower.
Well after this video I'm sure they will have those colors...
Tip that helps. Buy some cheap low grit sandpaper (Dollarama sells some). Tear off a small piece and grind the chalk pastels into it. It makes quick work of the chalk pastels and you don't have to worry about large chunks coming off.
Get well soon, Jeremy. And thank you for the video, DIY pigment powders are a really good thing 👌🏼
I created my assortment of colored pigments by completely grinding up each piece on a piece of 80-grit sandpaper (inside my airbrush booth to reduce dusting). I then stored each color separately in a small container I got in an 8(?) pack at the dollar store. Total for everything was less than US$15 and they have served me well! I understand that the solid pieces store nicely but I didn't want to start "shaving" whenever I need a pigment, and the small containers store nicely.
the colours you get from chalk: are they vibrant as real pigments or are they less saturated?
@@inexistent3rdchimera673 In a sense chalk sticks are pure pigment while the "real pigments" have fillers and binders to provide texture and work well with fixatives used by modelers. Chalk is intended solely for use on paper, held down either by the paper's tooth or with artists' fixative spray AFAIK and to have no perceptible texture.
Also, chalks come in a staggering range from black and sedate browns and greens to day-glo/UV fluorescent hallucinogen-drug-grade colors, way more than "real pigments" sold to modelers.
Also also, chalk is way WAY cheaper.
@@inexistent3rdchimera673 I have no comparison, unfortunately, but they do look very nice!
@@inexistent3rdchimera673 It does depend on the quality. You'll get better pigment from higher quality pastels like Pan Pastels, but you'll pay a premium for them. If you need more pigment you can always layer it using spray varnish in between.
For those that don't want a mess sanding find some pill pulverizers these grind up the pastel or chalk inside and even store it till you need it. No mess and it's very easy.
I grew up using pastels to shade action figures.. I always thought it was kind of a lost art since most use airbrushes to create those effects. I thought they looked really good. We'd use matte varnish to seal them and it made the colors pop even more. If you use a smaller stiffer brush and scrub the chalk directly you can get a lot more control when shading like a fold in a cape etc.
I used mineral spirits for sealing pigments or dry pastels for years, until i discovered ultra matt varnishes. Either mix them with it and apply, or airbrush after applying in dry. Works like a charm and mantains the super dusty look.
I've been using vallejo's air brush thinner to bind it.
It's great if you want the pastel to matte down onto a surface. But when I use green stuff world's rolling pins, I been using pigment powders to create that dirt between the paving stones effect. However the matting down of the pigments does create a less than optimal effect because it all sinks into the grooves.
To bulk it out I use tile grout mixed with a bit of fine sand then seal with the thinner, keep doing that until the desired bulk is achieved then top with the pigment powder and reseal with thinner.
No way. Face palm moment. Thanks for this dude. I'll head to my art supplies store and get some tomorrow. I hope you got your back sorted out mate.
Reading the first Fart Quest book to my kids right now, we’re all loving it!
When you walked in, I said to my hubby that you've had snow! Even before you said anything!
With a small brush and a clear sealant you can do minis as well (I should think, Poppen Atelier does doll makeovers with pastels)
Get well soon! Cheers from snowy Finland
Goddamn do you use a bunch of muscles you didn't know you had when dealing with snow ahahaahaa. I'm from a place where it rarely snows (and lasts about a day before melting), but walking around in it always leaves me sore the next day.
In addition to these chalk pastels, you can also use the colored sidewalk chalk that you get at the dollar store or big box. They end up being super large and super cheap, and as a bonus if you have kids, they can use whatever is left! Great video!
This is also how a lot of doll customizers do their blushing and shading. It's neat when my hobbies overlap skills! :D
The question is, did your mind say Mr. Super Clear, or Zoukei-mura when he got to sealing? (Realizes can of Zouks is in reach and corrects spelling...)
@@lkb3190 Mr Super Clear, naturally. Great for gunpla, doll repaints, and minis :D
Snow/ice related injuries suck. About a month ago I took a tailbone ride down my back stairs and I'm still not 100%.

The substitute pigment powders idea is brilliant! I had avoided getting pigment powders because of the price, but this is something I can swing.
-
And though I am several decades out of childhood, I too laughed at Fart Quest and the Dragon's Dookie!
Always love it when you upload! You’ve inspired me to buy a proxxon and start making my own terrain. Thank you!
Next weeks episode: How to build your own sit-stand hobby desk.
Back pain is terrible, hope ya start feeling better soon!
This was awesome! I have been doing this for years with my prop building, and it was nice to see someone explain it the way you did.
You've been a huge inspiration in terrain building. Thank you for all you do! This video is going to help a lot of us on a budget!
But your health is not an expense of our convenience. Please take the time you need to heal and put us on the back burner. You mean a lot to us
Short but lots of good info. I love the slow painful walk in frame too lol
Yet another awesome video. Thanks Jeremy. The trick to sealing the pigment is dabing on airbrush thinner. When it dries it will look the same and be secured.
Rubbing the pastel on a fine wire mesh strainer or a mini wire mesh sink drain cover will create a fine dust. Set the wire mesh over a jar like a small mason jar. I use small mason jars to store the dusted pastels so I don't have to chase around the dust. Clean up is easy with water, just be aware that some pigments are staining (just like in watercolor and acrylic paint).
Hope you feel better soon man.. As someone else that has a bad back the best thing is to get as much rest as you can and gentle movement.
Super helpful and brilliant idea here, Jeremy. Thanks for sharing and feel better!
My kids adore the fart quest books and were very excited to see them on your table. They immediately begged for the models, so now I'm subbed. Hope you feel better!
I have just started using these and absolutely loving the effects that I'm getting.
Hope you feel better soon! Please rest and take time to heal.
I discovered that a kitchen grater works really well for grinding chalk into pigment. Speeds things up nicely.
Jeremy, thank you! Back pain is horrendous, please get well quickly.
I hope you feel better soon! Take it easy when you can!
From another late 30 something year old, I'm sitting here vicariously feeling the obvious pain you're in. Way to power through brother, hope you feel better soon!! Also try a back roller back cryo-derm, expensive but literally gold for old man back... also weed is amazing for back pain... like maybe just get some gummies or something
Feel Better - I know back pain ... It's debilitating. You got me inspired to go get some of these chalk pastels. Thanks.
Feel better soon, glad you shared this info!!
Get well soon... and this comes at just the right time for me. Thanks.
I've learned so much from you and keep learning each video. I hope you'll get well soon!
I feel ur pain my back is also screwed and I can't even move!!!!! Feel better and speedy healing
I hope you get over your back injury quickly. Thanks for the video.
I love the 'little' tip videos! I hope your recovery is smooth and quick; gotta look after your back!
Take a break! Don't mess with a back injury. I hope you feel better soon.
I been watching your videos forever man and i've gotten so much good stuff out them. Hope your back gets better soon!
That was really cool. I just started making dioramas within the last couple of months. I have learned a ton from your videos. Thank you, you have helped me so much. I am definitely going to try this. Thanks for another great video and I pray your backs heals quickly.
Oh this video was actually super useful, I realized about midway through that I actually have some chalk pastels in my art shelf. I wish a speedy recovery for you!!
Hope you feel better soon. I did my back in a couple of years back, so I feel your pain. Also, very cool technique.
Thanks for the idea and thanks for the vid. Hope you get to feeling better soon. I have some occasional back issues and it's nothing to trifle with. Take it easy on yourself.
Best of wishes on a speedy recovery!
We appreciate the dedication. Hope you get well soon. It was a very very good video nonetheless! Was thinking of getting a set of pastels because.... well because why not. This totally conviced me to do it.
I've been using ready-made rust pigments, but have some chalk set aside for future projects. I appreciate your insight into application and seating of pigments, brother. I hope your back gets better soon. I'll keep you in my prayers. -Rick, USMC
The moment you got up, I felt that. I hope you feel better, I've been dealing with back pain for over 5 years. Stay safe my friend.
Now this is dedication... Making good vids with intense back pain. Get better soon and thanks for all you do for the crafting world!
Canned hairspray works perfect for chalk my mom is used it when she used to do chalk drawings on paper and it seals it and it still keeps its color
hope you feel better soon. thanks for your tips. always enjoy watching your work.awesome
hope you fill better soon be careful out there and thanks lover your stuff
Get well soon. Nice idea. I will test the self-made picments.
Thank you for making this video! I hope your back feels better really soon 🙏
I’m interested in trying to use my old eyeshadows for this lol
That’s rough, dude. Good Ole Vermont never gets snow quite like you do, but after literally snapping the shaft of my snowblower this weekend, I can imagine the struggle.
Hope you get some good PT and feel better soon. Take it easy, the BMC Fellowship will be here even if you need a break!
This was very useful. Thanks. Hope you feel better.
Hope you get well soon. I was actually just working in my model car with pastel chalks lol thanks for the tip about how to seal them in.
Dude, I love these diy material vids. Go recuperate your back, you deserve it. Lots of love!
Thank you for all the wonderful informational videos you do. Its both an enjoyable watch and has taught me a lot over the last few years. Also I LOVE your sponsor, while babysitting I read the first one to some of the kids, and now they all play together! Made for a really fun time for both the kids and I. All of the kid friendly terrain I made because of you has lasted super well too!
That’s awesome!
My first thought when seeing the sponsor was that I'm so envious and wish I was five again! When I was five it would have been considered... uncivilized to say the least (yes, I'm OLD).
I can sympathize with the pain that snowing in massive amounts causes. My back was killing me trying to shovel 20 inches of snow a couple of weeks ago.
Get well soon, Jeremy. And thank you for taking the time and the pain for this video
I've been wanting to try out pigment powders for awhile, this is really helpful thank you
Get well soon, thank you for the tips
Good luck with the back issues! I threw mine out about this time last year. All I can say is if you can alternate cold and hot on it. Stretching and Chiropractic help. The fact that you got any video up is amazing.
What a wonderful idea, thank you for sharing! When I use pastels for painting I would either use art fixative or the cheaper version: hairspray on it. It keeps the look but gives it much more staying power. Not sure if it’ll work on minis but might be worth a try?
that is so cool! I will have to check out the books for my grandkids. thanks for sharing.
Holy shit. BMC was the channel that got me into terrain building and mini painting again. You just blew my mind again with this! I hope you feel better!
Wish you a speedy recovery man. Thanks for the vid!
I hope your back feels better soon. Thanks for the video.
The chalk pastels are also really great for pre-shading larger minis and are commonly used with garage kits for pre-shading.
This is awesome! I’ve always been intrigued by these pigment powders but never pulled the trigger because of the price and small amount I’d need. This looks like a great way to get started. Hope your back mends soon!
Dude. Hope you feel better soon. My husband and I love watching your videos. Please take care of yourself/back!
get well soon and thanks for that video. It was very interesting.
I hope that you start feeling better soon! Please be a little more careful when clearing your snow in the future.
Thank you for the video! I found this to be very helpful and interesting. Now get better and rest your back!
great advise... hope you get better soon... take care
Cheers on the perseverance!
Hair spray to seal the chalk pastels. Had art classes in school and when we used chalk pastels to make drawings we used hair spray to seal it. It would not even smug afterwards.
Get well soon! Back pain is not joke. Thanks for all the work you do! :)
That information helped!! Hope your back gets better soon!
Your dedication to putting out content is absolutely astonishing. Rest up and heal up though. I say that as someone who’s had a trapped nerve in my neck for two weeks and can’t do much right now either.
Awesome info as always. I've been looking fir pigments and this is way to go. Feel better bud. Back issues suck!
Krylon Workable Fixatif is what I recommend in light coats. Darkens it a little, but leaves a surface you add more pastel to if you want. Also sold at Walmart, so easy to grab if you have one nearby.
Really cool video. I hope you feel better soon!
All your videos look so complicated to make in the beginning and then they look way too easy.. it’s incredible.
(I hurt my back and was stuck in bed on my back for over a month.. I feel for you… hurting your back sucks more than people realize… I regret every single decision that got me there lol).
(FINALLY someone pronounced Vallejo correctly 🙌😩).
Super useful video. Feel better!
This would be super fun for making alien scatter terrain. Great for blending unusual colors.
I've used this with rust and earthy colors and it works great, definitely picking up this set for all the colors.
Yet another great recommendation 👍
DUDE. Back pain is the WORST! Sending healing vibes your way!
The first 15 seconds of the video sound so much like me when I first get out of bed, or if I've been sitting down for awhile. Hope you're feeling better soon, man!
Hope your back gets better soon. Great tips.
Great video man, thank you!
I smashed all my pastels but you're right... I shoulda kept them intact. So much neater.
Enjoyed the video. Hope your back feels better soon
I feel ya, Jeremy! My back was hurting like that last week. Three things that'll help.1 pain reliever. 2 hot showers. and 3 the heating pad. Great video! I have a box of chalk pastels lying around collecting dust that I had no idea what to do with. Had to buy them for an art class but never liked working with them! You just saved them from the trashcan! lol. Feel better!
Sorry about your old man back. I too am a member of that club. Way to persevere!
Very valuable information, great ideas. Great save for a tough week! Don't forget there are special pigment fixers you can use to get them to stick.
I used a coffee grinder to pulverize my chalks. Definitely recommend a mask for that. I only bought earthly colors but now those other colors are calling me. Great video.
been doing that with chalk since about 1987. Its an old scale modeler trick for tanks and military vehicles.
Hope you feel better soon !
Very cool, hope you feel better man.
ive been doing this for years after my mother told me about it cause shes been at making sculptures before i was born. its actually the cheapest way to up your basing gain
Quality content bro! Thank you for everything you do!
Thanks for the video Jeremy, something I have often wondered about. Please take care and rest up.
thx for the great tip, didnt thought about it^^ get well soon!
