- Dricus du Plessis is the new UFC middleweight champion after defeating Sean Strickland by split decision (48-47 x2, 47-48) in an unforgettable title fight.
It was an historic night for du Plessis, who became the first ever South African-born UFC champion.
On a lesser note, he also silenced his sceptics who believed a longer fight would favour Strickland given du Plessis had previously not gone beyond four rounds prior to Sunday.

This chap seems like his only getting started. Congrats! South Africans are very challenging to compete against in general as they are influenced at grassroots level to never give up and always give 110% despite your ability and the outcome. Mix that with talent and you typically have a recipe that makes a champion.

I never doubted DDP having followed him before he got to the UFC. No one really respected his path to get into the UFC and for some reason, people kinda felt his wins over Till, Brunson, and Tavares were a fluke because he looked so unorthodox and looked like he was "tired" (which I never actually believed). So it was really only the Whittaker fight that people took him seriously and so maybe it does make sense as to why there's been such a crazy "unexpected rise" in the eyes of most people who didn't know who he was until then.
And Anthony Smith comes out of nowhere and pronounces his surname correctly the only time so far
This man opened a whole new door to MMA in South africa. Lots of young fighterers will follow. Maybe more sponsors will help excel the sport in SA. ❤ lots of respect to all of these fighters putting bodies on the line.
I have never even watched a full UFC match, yet here I am trying to analysie elite UFC athletes. Drikus is inspiring a nation, and that is good for future of the sport.
In my non-expert opinion, Drikus fights in way that feels very SA: Relentless, physical, stubborn and calculated, driven by pride/intense expection to win. I dont think a sloppyish/unorthodox style is necessarily a SA trait, but a kamakazi, I dont care about my body or tiredness / Ill fight with whatever I have attitude, is.
I remember watching the netball world cup last year and even the SA girls went into a sustained barbarian mode to graft out some difficult wins.
The thing about South Africans, is that what is.normal for us, looks like a war to others. South Africa is that kind of country. Its not something to brag about
