- Ahead of their meeting in Newark next month, Poirier has admitted that Makhachev may be the toughest test of his career. He felt the strength of Nurmagomedov during a 2019 unification bout, where he lost by submission after almost landing a submission early on.
But he feels Makhachev may be better in a number of aspects of his game after watching him knock out Volkanovski in their last outing. “His submission game, Jiu-Jitsu wise, is a bit more versatile than Khabib’s was,” Poirier said of Makhachev during last night’s The MMA Hour.
“Khabib had some chokes that he did really well, but Islam’s put himself in bad positions, going for armbars, maybe he loses a position but he uses his wrestling to get it back. He’s a bit more of a threat Jiu-Jitsu wise in scrambles, and his striking is better than Khabib.”
Khabib Nurmagomedov is widely considered to be one of the greatest UFC fighters of all time… But could his protege Islam Makhachev be even better?
The Dagestani duo rose through the ranks together, with Makhachev waiting in the shadows as Nurmagomedov became lightweight champion and a major drawing star. And once the elder fighter decided to hang up his gloves, it took just a matter of months for his teammate to claim his old belt.

You're right. The only issue is that ufc hasn't seen how good islam is on the ground... according to the video, he's even better on the ground than Khabib but khabib is just more ferocious.
I think khabib has better overall wrestling but Islam has better submissions. (Besides neck crank)

Historically, high level wrestler vs high level wrestler ends up being a standup match. If this is the case, Islam would win by KO.
Except Khabib is better on the ground. I've never seen anyone really challenge Khabib on the ground. Khabib doesn't have close fights. I think if Khabib fought Volk, it would not be close.
@@nelsonking volk is different from anyone khabib has faced. If he utilized his strong base and low center of gravity like in the Machachev 1 fight, it could pose problems for Khabib, if it went to standup.

As of now...Khabib. Islam can surpass him with a few more dominant wins. But Khabib is still ahead of Islam record wise. Not just for the fact Khabib never lost and Islam has but Khabib dominated more top level guys in their prime that Islam has so far.

The only opponents that fought were batting average and only one champion was MacGregor. It's a very poor record. I emphasize defeat, but considering the level of the times when there was no powerful wrestler, I don't think it's great. Unlike khabib, makhachev beat all of the best wrestler, jiu-jitsu player, and hitting player, and proved by fighting higher level players. khabib is neither the strongest nor the best player. Rather, he is a poorly verified player.
khabib is overrated. His ufc record is only 13. Can khabib take Gamlot, who is 92 percent taken down defense? What can khabib do to gamrot or tsarukyan with his batting? khabib has already proven that he could lose his fight against Tibau if he fails to subdue it with a wreslring. While khabib may be strong in the gym at normal weight he hasn't lost, in actual games khabib won't beat the makhachev and wreslring strongmen, and his hawk is overrated.

Please guy khabib is like a god compared to Islam. He taught him everything and he may not be as fancy or whatever but inside the cage he will come after you over and over until you give up and that’s why he is immensely greater than islam
