- Sean Strickland and Paulo Costa will throw down in a pivotal middleweight clash in the UFC 302 co-main event.
Strickland (28-6 MMA, 15-6 UFC), who dethroned Israel Adesanya to become champion, lost his middleweight title in a close decision to Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 297 in January - a fight he thought he won.
Costa (14-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC) will also look to rebound. After outlasting Luke Rockhold in a Fight of the Night war at UFC 278, Costa dropped an entertaining decision to Robert Whittaker at UFC 298 in February.

It's gonna be a stand up scrap , people can hate on strickland all they want but the man is a warrior and so is costa so it should be a good fight , plus 5 rounds it should be a war. Neither guy really goes for takedowns so you know its gonna be a banger, costa is a savage when he gets stuck in and strickland is the wing chun boxing master so it should be a great fight.

Costa is so scary dangerous. But his opponents can see his moves coming easily. Strickland blocked Izzy's sniping striking so costa has to make this fight very very dirty and play old school fight and costa might win by tko otherwise i think Strickland would win by picking apart and win by decision
No one has really picked costa apart other than eezy with his kicks. If Sean can survive, he can win by volume. Costa will be there all 5 rounds and he aint folding but he will slow down. That's when sean can put his volume punching style to work and land some good damaging strikes that will give him the win. I like Sean. He's funny and he has a good style but Costa is a tank. This is gonna be a good fight. It dont matter who wins. We're getting a banger.

Strickland gonna put the straight punches in costa the whole fight and sean is the best defense in the middleweight divison, i think he win the fight against dricus, the only chance costa have is to land a spinning heel kick and pray to ko strickland out cold with that.
Most of Strickland’s losses come from fighters with high finish rates. He doesn’t do well against power punchers and Costa needs a win more than Strickland does tbh. Sean got knocked out by that spinning wheel kick years back and Costa does that move beautifully
I’m glad Sean got his moment. He can beat anyone, but he can also lose to pretty much anyone. I love Strickland’s toughness, but if he does not get finished I see Costa beating him up the whole fight.

Like when Izzy went in to fight Jan in light heavyweight he lost that fight by a mile and went back to middleweight. Whether a fighter goes up or down a division they can still be beaten. Sean wasn't made for the welterweight division at all. Paulo would most likely be made for the light heavyweight division if he truly had the chance.

Costa will likely headhunt Sean in that first round, come really hard and heavy. Sean will have to survive that, if he does then it's smooth sailing from there, he'll get Costa tired and squinty-eyed and TKO him or submit him.
It's likely after who Sean has faced he has the experience and skill to survive the power and speed and punches and kicks Costa throws at him within the first round.
Costa can KO anybody though and he would have KO'd Robert flat in round 1 IF the bell hadn't rung.
Sean is a volume cardio guy but he's different because his jab HURTS and he sees basically everything coming a mile away. You gotta have fantastic kicks and punches to catch him off guard. Look at him surviving round 1 against the very athletic Abus who through really hard stuff at him. Look at him taking everything DDP had, look at him shadowing Izzy's every move, look at him putting 140 or so shots in Uriah's face. Could be a legendary brawl, could be a harsh KO early, could be Costa getting owned for 5 rounds, but it will be awesome. I think they both gotta something to prove. They know they should have won their last fights and they know the title shot this can offer...plus this is basically a BMF battle.
100% agree, very similar to the Whittaker vs Khamzat fight if you think about it. If Strickland and Whittaker can weather the storm for the first 2 rounds, we'll see a savage ass-whooping for the rest of the fight. Although personally, I think Costa stands more of a chance than Chimaev does just with the way he likes to come forward and if he's able to dictate the fight, it could be a quick night at the office for Costa. Both fights are obviously incredibly important for the future of the division and like it or not even with Costa coming off of a loss in 3/4 fights and Chimaev barely being ranked in the division, to Strickland who's just BARELY had the title slipped away from him and Whittaker who's been beating all the top guys for years to get the gold back, the winner of EITHER of these fights is inarguably next in line for whoever the winner of Du Plessis vs Adesanya turns out to be.

Should be a hell of an entertaining fight forsure. Could Costa pull it off ? Sure... but you're over rating his power like crazy lol. His last KO was like 6 years ago vs Uriah Hall and he couldn't even finish one of the most chinny MW's (Rockhold) at the end of his career after being KO'd outcold in 3 out of his 4 last fights before Costa. Sean by dec.
& Costa ain't no BMF, when from the summer of 22' till Oct. 23' he pulled out of 4 fights bruh.. His whole record from 2023 is 0 fights and 3 pull outs ffs 😅 Not to mention the weight bs with Vettori, etc etc lol cmon now. There's an arguement for Strickland being a BMF calibre fighter but Costa has done way too much pulling out of fights and acting like a diva to even be considered.
@@KnownProphet you're right, a bmf is always there for the fight, been a while since a ko as well, and strickland has an amazing chin, the two ko/tko's sean ever encountered were from a wheel kick and alex AND even then he still had to be struck more times to put him down, I imagine costa comes at him like abus and sean will weather the storm and from there drag costa into deep waters until he either tko's an exhausted costa or takes him down and even submits him, I think sean really wants to end this fight rather than let it go to judges, really wants to send a message, ddp and izzy prepared sean well for this fight
if sean is comfortable enough to walk him down in round one and costa can't even find his stride there then we could see a real masterclass showing, in the time costa has had 2 wins, sean has recovered from colliding with a van and won 8 fights..with 2 losses he didn't actually lose, basically a 30-4 record..which is amazing, costa has a few good kicks but nothing sean shouldn't see coming

I think this one is fairly easy to predict, or well that remains to be seen of course. But the only way i see Costa winning is by KO and he only has TKO's in the UFC, so my prediction is Sean either by decision or a TKO in round 4 or 5 when Costa is gassed.

I did see in the video though, that Paulo Costa is 99.4 Kilos. Translated from Spanish, to Metric, and then to The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) means Paulo Costa weighs 225 lbs. That's 40 pounds over the weight limit.Unless he's training with Paddy the Baddy, I don't think he's going to make weight. And if he doesn't, Sean will likely decline, as it is bad practice to allow someone from a higher weight division fight you without them having suffered the dehydarting side effects of weight-cutting. That larger opponent would also be fresh and lively.
If Costa makes weight he could end up having a rushed and dreadful weight cut. That should no doubt affect his body during the fight which could mean he has a bad performance in the office
