When I started skimming back in the 80s, we used to steal construction signs ( sheets of plywood, basically ) and cut, warp and glass our own boards. Through trial and error we'd sand down rails and even try to make grooves or even tiny "fins" on the tail. They were usually big and clumsy but a ton of fun. Wasn't until much later I was able to afford my first foam board.
Just started skimming a few days ago. You make it look so easy!
Don't worry man it will become instinctual! Then you work on wave timing and that becomes instinctual as well. I taught myself in 1983 after seeing this miracle of fun in action at 15 years old. Foam boards didn't even EXIST til the late 1980s and then they were $200! OUCH! I made my own plywoods.

Can you catch waves with a Walmart board like those are like 20 bucks it sucks for me becuase I'm broke and I live were the waves are flat in Brevard county Florida and all I got is a pretty lit wooden board with grip pads and wax its lit but I dont know if its the flat waves or me I wanna see you shread on a cheap Walmart bought one on flat waves that's basicly impossible

Make your own it's fun! For flats you can't beat slick Wilsonart plastic laminate on the bottom. Use Elmer's waterproof contact cement. One coat first to let soak in, then another to apply for the bonding, and rubber mallet from the inside outwards, then jigsaw, then router and sand a bevel. varnish the sides!
R B can this make a board go out onto water more? Because that’s my main problem I can’t seem to get my board to go out any further than just a couple feet before I start to sink into the water.
@@lukegogolin7069 It's a bit better than a half-inch plywood board because it's lighter and faster on the SAND, but to get out there you need to turn sideways. However to REALLY get out there you need a foamie and turn sideways. The Wilsonart board is a layer top and bottom of a 3/8 inch plywood. Like I said tough and fast on sand and you don't have to worry about pebbles wrecking your finish. GREAT for shorebreaks CLOSER to the sand. You marry the layers, pound with rubber mallet, then jigsaw it out after a few days drying. Choose your plywood with the grain longways and a nose-ward rocker bend already in. Look along the edge for the bend.

Great video as always! I finally got to the beach and tried some skimming but I am still having problems catching the waves. It feels like I am either flying out of them or the board sinks slightly under the water so I can't catch it when I get there. Guess I'll have to keep trying!

Ok now I feel better!! I have all the old school wooden surfboard,skimboards, n I thought it was pretty difficult especially on the drop part, just dropping it but watching u try it. Makes me feel like not a total amateur even thought I technically am!!

I was given a wooden skimboard that didn't float hardly and was pretty small for me. But I road that thing hard. It wasn't until later I saw someone using a bigger one made out of carbon fiber or plastic or whatever than white material is and I saw them riding into deep water to ramp waves and as a hard-core skateboarder I was so envious and jealous, I knew it was like a skimboard but I never knew what it was called. Turns out it was just a regular skim board mine was just super cheap thin and could only ramp a very shallow wave

Originally I was a surfer,started windsurfing when I got thru the no wave but windy conditions. Moved up to kite surfing because gears are more easy to carry...Nowadays when there is no wave and no wind, there is skim.....

good idea for a vid. my first board was a round woodie. had a small hole drilled near the rail so when flying down a flat beach a little stream of sandy water would shoot up......it was rad.

My 2nd and 3rd boards were 34" home-made 3/8" plywood boards! One resin, the other Wilsonart. Slick marble! FAST but I couldn't get out. I had to do it with extreme speed! Then I made wooden Victoria copies...... Then Wilsonart Victoria shapes! FAST! This was 1983-1990.
i have never used a skimboard in my life and i just purchased one that’s 35 inches. i bought a small one so i could somewhat fit it in a backpack and i’m now realizing that’s probably too small for someone who’s 130 pounds like me but i don’t live anywhere near and ocean so i would never really have any waves either way. do u think a 35 inch board would work fine for my situation?

Hey im a relatively knew skimborder and I want to know how waxing the board works, do you need to still wax it if you have traction pads? If yes, are you supposed to apply wax to the traction pads? Etc.
Don't need too wax with pads but slapping some speed wax on the bottom will help a lot
My skimboard has no pads on it and I kept slipping off of it, in going to get a wakesufing board, and a skimboard for christmas
Here’s how you make your own
1. Take a big piece of paper and make an outline of the board
2. Buy a piece of plywood and put the outline on it
3. Cut the board out with your outline
4. Sand the rail down
5. Dip the tip in water for 24 hours
6. Then make your rocker by placing a weight where you want the bend to be and put the tip more in the air
7. Sand some more and that should be it

Hey this question is for skid kids. I just got a skimboard for my bday the brand it bullet proof surf and it’s about hip high. Is it a good board for skimming?
I think it might be too small if it is only up to your hips. Still good to practice with though

Bought octopus traction pads for new dude cruise. Instantly peeled... any suggestions?
Sandpaper the area before application like 140 grit
Use 140 grit then a finer grit like 60 or 80 to really polish the area where you are going to put the pads. Then ensure the area is clean by wiping it down with acetone
