  • In 1975, the picturesque city of Cambridge was gripped by fear. A monster was stalking the streets, attacking women with increasing violence and depravity. it would soon become what was, at that time, the largest manhunt in British criminal history; the hunt for the Cambridge rapist.

Anyway, how much better were things back in the seventies when life meant life? These days he’d get 20 years and be out in 8. Eventually he was caught by a very brave female police officer - one of very few on the force at that time. I met her a few years later via mutual friend after she had left the force and was trying to convince me to invest in a scheme (I was Marketing boss for Watties at that time). The next bit of the story is incredible. Which is why it would make a great doco - and probably why one was never made! The Auckland Herald definitely covered the story, it was daily news. Maybe the Herald has a digital archive? But it definitely would not have covered what happened next! Only me, the copper involved and our mutual friend know that plus a few officials, no doubt. When you find the story I will tell you what happened next rather than do a spoiler! I was dumbstruck when I found out I can tell you!

I was 15 at the time this monster was on the loose. It was a frightening time. How he evaded capture for so long is maddening but forensic science wasn't like it is now. Its hard to believe that him declining a saliva swab was allowed back then! Was the fact that he lacked a chromosome the reason why he was sterile? That fact would probably be discovered early today therefore narrowing down suspects.. I wonder how many victims didn't come forward. Cook was extremely dangerous. Thank you for telling the story so well and in so much detail. I hope the victims had a lot of support. I can't imagine how terrifying their ordeals were.

It is truly sickening that some merchants are allowed to profit from such tragedies. The worse part of this is that some people buy this crap. Here in Canada anything related to the crimes committed by Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka was strictly prohibited to be turned into commercial items of any kind. Guess what : the Americans started to print collectible cards with photos of the victims of these two monsters, almost as soon as this couple was sentenced. Sometimes i find myself thinking if this fascination with horror and suffering, has anything to do with the Anglo Saxon culture. I do know that the celebration of Halloween is an important part of that. Good show, keep the good work amiga. Greetings from Toronto.
