The detective comes across so friendly and even meek at the beginning. He sounds like a newbie even though he's super experienced, all this to make Russ feel superior. Great professional 👏
Right?! I was really sceptical when he started questioning.
He's a senior detective. His "meek" approach is probably a tactic. I assume detectives will use different detective persona's with different suspects/offenders. He is obviously very skilled. He became intimidating without even raising his voice or threatening; just stating cold hard facts and warnings. I'm impressed.
The interrogator is so good at what he does that the video of this very interview is actually shown as a learning resource in some schools.
He knew Russ’s ego would get the better of him if he let him think he was in charge from the get go..brilliant interrogation skills
His name is Jim Smyth and he worked with a very dedicated team to get Russyboy to talk.

Never EVER has such a slow, almost boring conversation been so incredibly riveting!! Almost no narration needed by truly criminal during that whole interrogation. What a great detective.
The interrogation took nearly 2 hrs with Russell being completely silent for 15\20 minutes at a time.
I don't even want to imagine the horror of going down to the basement to get your cat, turning, and seeing a stranger staring back at you from a dark corner :(

I’ve seen my dogs look as if they’re watching someone and I can’t imagine being more scared if I actually saw an intruder.
I'm scared that dogs and cats are seeing things we can't. Admit it people, it genuinely sometimes looks like your cat or dog is tracking somethings movements in thin air; iv'e always found that eerie af.

Most certainly BOTH of my cats would alert me to an intruder. Any noise, unfamiliar voice, or even a knock on the front door leaves my guard kitty growling. Their ears hear everything!
OMG being burglarized and then returning home the following day to learn that the intruder had been inside with you all along?! I have goosebumps. That is the scariest fucking thing in the world OMG 😭

@@BrianClem Everyone always claims pitbulls. Their are plenty of less aggressive, yet far more powerful, deadly dog breeds that are better for protection. Turkish Kangal for example, great temprament and family dog, could kill a pitbull in minutes.

Well done to the detective who made it so clear to Russel that no expense or task would be spared in the case, causing him to realise that only a full confession would limit the negative impact on his wife.
There are several programs about this on CZcams. I've watched most, if not all of them. Mainly just to watch Smith conduct the interview. Unlike Hollywood movies, he was smooth, never raised his voice, made no threats, and conducted himself with dignity and treated the suspect with respect. Of course, he had the advantage of knowing he had the guilty party. Still, a wonderful example of exceptional police work.

This was my dad's boss, I remember the day Russell was arrested. My dad came home early the same colour as his green flight suit. He was the navigator for the flights Williams did for dignitaries like Queen Elizabeth II .. I remember the days of search parties looking for Jessica Lloyd. This story always brings up some nasty memories. Williams was polite.. but his eyes could burn holes through you. I hate qhen people say 'we never expected this...' but in this case holy crap, is that statement ever true

You got to give these people kudos for practically reliving this for themselves. We sometimes are pissed with the police however cases like this proves how valuable they are. Please did you hear what exactly he said after asking if the detective could be discreet with the DNA stuff?? He said "because the impact could be "blah....blah..... blah" . Did you hear him?
He's trained and skilled for this kind of stuff so I'm sure he's used to it and that's why he's so excellent with his interrogation skills...but at the back of his mind he's sick to his stomach at the bastard.

Not the police officer who went to Jessica Lloyd's front door the night she was kidnapped. Colonel Williams' vehicle was parked next door deserted lot, one set of tracks in the snow leading to the woods behind her but never checked nothing, didn't even run its tag to see who owned it. It costed Jennifer her life.
The psychopath that thinks he's always the smartest person in the room. Utterly chilling.

As someone whose father is a Canadian Army veteran, I can say this guy is a disgrace to the entire Canadian Forces. Glad they burned his uniforms and that he will never see the light of day again. God bless the families whose lives were forever changed by his monstrous actions.
It’s a shame he still gets his pension. They really got rid of any evidence of his career especially when they destroyed the car as well.

Probably one of the most intriguing interrogation I've watched. The silence was quite fascinating and spoke volume.
Absolutely love the fact that the interrogator did not address him as Kernel and made him feel like an average Joe/Suspect with no power nor special treatment.

An interesting fact about this case is how he flew a group of Canadian armed forces members to California for training to go to Afghanistan while that young girl was in his garage. One of those soldiers was my father and while they were in training they heard of his arrest, he was so well respected in the military it was beyond shocking
He also famously had hundreds of photos of himself modeling the underwear he stole. The media here in Canada has a field day with these photos and they were plastered all over the news. If you google him you will likely find these photos readily available in various articles. It was his way of documenting each incident

This is by far the best true crime video regarding this case I have seen. This can't be told properly in a 15 minute video, especially with such a brilliant interview. Detective Jim Smith is a master interrogator.

Some lowlife in my city got sentenced to 20 to 40 years today. He was late for work, he hit and ran down a 5 year old on his bike doing 60 mph in a 35 mph zone. I cannot believe the light sentence that this monster got in comparison.
Sounds like manslaughter, which doesn't carry as heavy a sentence. So tragic nonetheless.

Jim Smyth was also involved in the investigation of the murder of little Tory Stanford in Ontario, a few years after the Williams case.
He interviewed the suspect, who gave him a vague description of where the body was dumped. Smyth drove around the countryside, relying on very few details, until he actually found Tory’s body.

He was sentenced to two life imprisonment and yet, somehow, mind-bogglingly enough, he only needs 25 years before he is eligible for parole...come on, Canada! That is just not acceptable! Why, on Earth, is parole even a possiblity for him???

He will never get out. Just because he may be have the possibility of parole, everyone involved knows that he will never see the light of day again. It’s just a technical thing. It in no way means he will ever be even considered for it. And trust me, he will never be let out because he’s safer inside. We live in relative peace in Canada but step outside that and we really loathe it. He’s in the best place if he wants to stay alive.
Eligible doesn't mean he's ever going to get it. I don't see him ever being released.
@@shellos8 yep I think it’s in the Canadian constitution that life without parole isn’t constitutional, I could be wrong but I remember something like that being the case. So I don’t think he could technically get sentenced to life without parole or a longer sentence like 30-life.

The way he would leave victims feeling completely helpless and in total fear of being in their own homes is the ultimate attack of his crimes. He was all about the mental games and thrived on the tactics of pure fear. His progression - from the first conduct of misbehavior to his last MURDER - was SCARILY FAST for some serial killer stats... 💯 JEKYLL AND HYDE

This interrogation is so good, he hammers him and then says good job and stands up. It asserts dominance and says he’ll go and let’s the tension ease, then ask even more questions standing up and eventually shaking is hand. It’s so smart.
This is why I say you can’t trust anyone. You never know who someone is truly.

Don't worry, he will never see the light of day. The military I'm sure will always send a rep to speak against him at the hearings. It's unfortunate but Canadian laws lean heavily towards reformation and a belief that no one is beyond redemption. Their highest sentence is 25 years without the possibility of parole. That's what they call life imprisonment 🤷 judges however, at sentencing can add warnings and recommendations that certain culprits should never be paroled.
It is “a chance” like that of an ice cube in hell. He is never getting out
Thank you for uploading a quick and concise video on him, my family is from Trenton (CFB Trenton was the base he commanded) and needless to say this absolutely rocked our community, everyone was enraged but with no where to point it. My grandfather is a veteran of that base, and he was incredibly depressed and distracted after, for someone we trusted so much to protect our people and country, to betray us so savagely. Also to give you idea of temperatures our winters here range from -15c to -40c, with between 1-6 feet of snow a month.

To think Russel Williams was such high in rank.. A model military person. It’s scary and disgusting that such a man could have built up such a facade. I felt for his wife at the end. It must have been devastating to find out his true self.

He was actually excited to be called in, because he was sure the cops thought his neighbor Larry Jones was the prime suspect. He thought he could tell some lies and put the final nail in Larry's coffin. He dumped Jessica's body right where Larry did his fishing.

Edit: Beautifully done! I don’t come across videos that are typically all that different from one another when dealing with videos covering the same person. But, you draw the viewer in, you keep them engaged the whole time, and you provide exactly what is needed to come to a simple logical conclusion as to what happened within the cases you highlight. This guy reminded me of getting caught out by my parents as a teenager and having absolutely zero to say in my own defence.
It absolutely baffles me that in America nobody gets a lawyer for a police interview. In the uk it’s considered madness not to get one, innocent or guilty.

Thankyou for "preserving the modesty" of the woman who's "personal items" had been removed and not talking about the details of the "items" or the exact message left on the computer. This case has been well covered and is well known, so there really aren't any "secrets" about the crimes, but still, I commend you for not going into the more unnecessary and sordid disclosure of a victims private life.
Yep too often personal things about the victims are just casually mentioned but the killer is protected.

This monster strutted in there as if he was untouchable. No matter how many times I watch this interview I cannot help but admire the skill of Detective John Smyth as he masterfully outmaneuvered Russell Williams. Kudos.
His brain will never be capable of truly caring about others, their needs, their lives. He should never be released.
He described his crimes like is a normal behavior to do those horrible things. Can imagine been in my bed sleeping and have a stranger to woke me up to rape and kill. My heart goes to those women. God will judge you as you did to them.

2 life sentences for murder and all those other years piled on for his dozens of other crimes and he will STILL eligible for parole in 25 years. Canada and the UK are nuts when it comes to sentencing for sex crimes. This is a guy who obviously never needs to be out in society again.
Can’t believe how calm and collected this guy is as he’s telling the detective where the victim’s body is. He sounds like he’s in a business interview going over plans for work! 🥱 How do these monsters appear to be so seemingly “normal” ( has a wife, home and reputable career) yet spent his day breaking into these women’s homes, sexually assaulting and murdering them, then returns home to his wife like it’s just another normal day at the office. AND he was a distinguished military officer who piloted rescue and search missions?! The VERY type of person our society should be trusting!! TRULY terrifying. Whilst i have been a sub to this great channel for some time now i have only just watched this...off the back of a great interrogation anaylsis over on The Behaviour Panel channel...they all agree this detective did an amazing job...during those awkward silences i was glued holdng my breath...slowly watching as he realises he is toast and they have him...great great job...oh and to the creators of Truly Criminal...fantastic work and output every week...it along with a couple of other crime anaylsis channels is my guilty pleasure in life at the moment and so look forward to a new upload...keep up the outstanding work!!!
Ugh I remember this. This traumatized all ontarians including myself. Especially driving through tweed down 37 regularly to get to my grandparents secluded cottage home (going there in two days). Now I’m reminded and creeped out again.

I was in college in the area while this was all happening, it's strange to now be watching crime videos about something I actually remember being aware of and so near to.
