I don’t think it’s a game issue. I think it’s a human dopamine issue. Our brains are fried I truly believe there’s not a single game out there that could keep any human interested for a long period of time. As I completely agree with the majority of things you’re saying you also can’t necessarily fully blame the game because overall, it’s a good game.

@@FurthestLevellI think this video was incredibly articulate and presented information so well, but the take was a bit iffy, as games like deeprock galatic, and even helldivers 1 have a cult following despite the mission archetypes being similar in each round. On top of this they already confirmed they are adding another faction and more enemies to pre-existing factions. I think there is a point to be made though that it wont keep its concurrent players whatsoever which was the point you were trying to get across in this video.

Sort of a pointless video. The game is in its infancy and it's so easy to see how they can expand on quests and even game modes without too much effort. Heck the AI just got a massive tuning buff, meaning very few even play on 7+ diff now. The ground concept is solid and argueably revolutionary yet with zero pay to win aspects. Saying it's doomed to fail just around the corner is no diff than the proverbial village nut yelling the end is nigh.

Exactly. In my opinion, the game kills destiny's concept of missions. Hell divers doesn't even need raids to keep It fun. There is so much potential. Plus It's unwise to to think you figured a game out when this is history in the making. We've never seen anything like this happen before with a game like hell divers, It's going to be up there in the history books for sure.

I understand that our CZcamsr here is losing interest. That happens. I love HD2 but I know some day I'll leave it.
But I think the game has the power to cultivate a following. People who will stay and play and comeback for big updates.
Look at stuff like deep rock. Warframe. Overwatch even. Games that have been around for a long time and still have concurrent players.

I dont think the game will "die" as long as they add more. I think it will be a lot like Palworld and Lethal Company. Massive at launch but eventually some players will just move on. But I have plenty of friends who are still very much active on Palworld and Lethal Company. Sure of you compare peak players to current players its much lower but still far from dead.
I think something Helldivers has that those two games don't is re playability. Sure it's the "same" mission but it never really feels like that to me. Its a game thats easy to learn but hard to master. I have most everything unlocked and still when I play on Helldivers difficulty I find myself still really struggling to finish a mission.
I also think the world building around that game helps. All of the player made content on the game, like the guy who runs a news channel to try and help direct players to planets in need of help as well as give out information on upcoming content in a sort of in universe setting is so much fun! I absolutely agree that in a month the numbers will probably drop pretty dramatically, HOWEVER when you are at the hights they are at. Even a dramatic drop still leaves a LOT of players left

  • @p0lter7
    @p0lter7 Před 2 měsíci +3

What we lost 5% of the players? What game can say that a month+ in... After a freaking AMAZING start, exceeding all expectations, without any marketing. Also wouldn't surprise me if the player base goes up again with the new warbond/mechs.
It's also not hard to see how they can add stuff with weapons, stratagems, nades, new missions, new factions, new monsters per factions, harder difficulty, mixing several factions on 1 planet. And people are having a damn fun time BEFORE all that's added. Just nades alone, gas nades, flash nades, arc nades, invis nades, "boop" nades, cluster nades. That's just some simple nade examples. The potential to add stuff is absolutely massive and doesn't seem that hard imo.
Hell I didn't think I would like the game. I'm a pvp guy. Absolutely no regrets here, think what they did is awesome for a great price with no bs transactions and a huge potential/upside.
I also dont really see much competition. When Im looking for a pvp shooter I got a million choises. What compares to helldivers? I cant really think of anything

While I haven't enjoyed the video largely due to the specific use of language, I would like to point out something about its core statement.
Helldivers 2 is NOT a solved/"closed" game. They achieve that in several ways - by bringing in a variety of new effects to planets, consistently adding new content (like the mechs that are currently already in the game), by creating the larger narrative of the galactic war (I think every Helldiver both dreads AND wants to see what happens once the Super-Earth sector gets invaded), and by the promise of the new factions, at least one of which I'd very much expect to come soon.
Helldivers team has done many things right for this game. And while individual hype may be dying down, as we the players are shifting from the exploration stage to the mastery stage, it is highly doubtful that the fall of hype would be the fall of Helldivers.
Helldivers and Elden Ring don't even fit the same niche in gaming, so that DLC release is a really weak argument here.

Honestly I don't really agree here. You're not like totally wrong about somethings, but stuff like the server issues was totally an unforeseeable thing. Arrowhead has been remarkably transparent about things, admitting where they're messing up and taking feedback as best they can. Sure they're not saints or anything, but when they got several orders of magnitude more players than they did compared to the first helldivers, I think issues with the backend is excusable.
They couldn't exactly just buy more servers and call it a day, because the underlying architecture was just not able to scale well enough. That they rebuilt parts of their game to accommodate the wildly huge playerbase so fast is actually quite incredible.
I'm not sure it was wise to be speculating on the issue when you didn't really understand it, though. But that's just a me thing, I guess.

Looking at steam charts doesn't indicate any kind of death. Player numbers have remained fairly stable, and so long as we have hope for something new moving forward, will likely remain alive. Yes, people will naturally quit playing eventually. Nobody wants to play the same game forever. But that doesn't mean it won't remain a staple in people's repertoire of games they return to. As a multiplayer game, it will maintain some freshness in playing with other people. Not everyone shares your desire to discard games for the next fix of fresh game. While I doubt everyone's going to no life this game to prop up it's numbers, I think a lot of us are going to be sticking around for future content and for the fun times and high action. The game is difficult enough that it never gets too stale.

I'm really okay if they can maintain about 5000 - 10000 players over two or three years. That's much lower than 450k players, but if the game is calibrated to work with 10k players, I'll be happy. HD1 only had like 500 - 1k players for last few years, and it was still fun for core fans, as long as you had friends.

You get that entertainment and you're done. For me, if a game goes to $1 / hour-played or better (i.e. 50c/hour or 10c/hour-played) then I'm extremely happy. Right now, HD2 sits at 250hours for me. We already know the “DLC plan” all you have to do is glance at the top down game this is the sequel to.
The mechs are in game NOW (3weeks after launch and at the point the no-lifers have started to falter/look-around just after a “minor” balance patch that just turned starship troopers into the necron apocalypse, endless hordes rise from the ground beneath you) the next battle pass happens next weekend, there’s a new faction or 2 to add in at some point. More maps, managed progression (Joel watches and seeks weaknesses to exploit).
You are ascribing “death” to the natural lifespan of a progression based multiplayer game but Helldivers is in the flush of its youth still and the “rat tail” of a declining player base is sone ways off yet due to the single face it’s the BEST PvE co-op shooter experience currently available and that kind of feature set tends to hold a community long after single player stories are done, MMOs are raided out and loot/meta aspects are “solved”. Hell lookk at killing floor 2 or DRG, both similar in sone ways but still going strong 6+ years after release, Helldivers will likely be no different given how well overall the devs have responded.
    Bait, clicked.
You aren’t wrong but you are most likely jumping the gun by 6-24 months. Which given your profession is utterly predictable and beneficial to your bottom line.
As to the server issues it’s already been said it WASN’T a server issue it was a scalability one (40 times the expected player base tends to do that with interactive systems), and not a single major game t for the day one pop surge anymore as it’s often unfathomably large versus the sustained player base there on.

Ok since we are comparing to CoD, team death match is team death match each game is effectively the same and their are only so many different game types, just like HD2's missions.
But something HD2 has that CoD doesn't is an grand narrative, missions unique to that story point, it has two (soon to be three) enemies to fight that give and entirely different combat feel, their is scope (and Map space) to even add a fourth enemy, be that a Rebellion against Managed Democracy, or a completely new enemy type.
Yes it needs more higher level stuff, but that is coming (mechs already here) new enemies are already on the field (Flying bugs!)
So I don't think it will die, will it's player base drop over time? Sure most games do, but I foresee spikes during events as people that have everything so don't need to grind come in to experience the narrative and push back against Joel and his undemocratic minions

Every weapons should have its own upgrade tree, options & attachments, and special use case at the higher difficulties, every gun in the game needs its own upgrade tree. They needed to balance the weapons like said characters in a MOBA. The starter rifle should be just as useful (in certain situations) at Helldive difficulty, after you've mastered it and upgraded and customized it (options for attachments) Which gives more use for those useless Requisition slips once you've unlocked all the strategems. Heck, some of the weapon attachments should be unique, rare drops that you can only find when you dive on a planet (with the in-world explanation being they're just shipments and supplies dropped from previous missions).
As is, the game is filled with 90% useless filler weapons that are pointless. And the games main attempt at longevity of it being this on-going campaign, isn't working as well, cause its moving too slowly. They are investing in dedicated servers and this overall galaxy map and on going war - might as well have it move along quicker, there should be random attacks on settled planets next to earth, having you fight among city buildings and streets, and settlements on planets near earth, change the mission types and backdrops, rocky hills don't feel different cause you change the colour palette or weather.
I haven't maxed out my character level ( I think I'm 34), but I'm already done with the game. I unlocked all the strategems and most of the ship modules, I unlocked Helldive difficulty, whats left ? there are no more carrots on a stick for me to chase, and the base-line gameplay loop isn't that rewarding, with almost all the guns not being fun or satisfying to use limits my loadouts. Those double barrel shotguns you randomly find on planets, why aren't those fun? Why aren't they OP? Give me the equivalent of the Doom super shotgun. Double barrel shotguns should strip enemy armour. If I extract with a double barrel shotugn, unlock it for me as a support weapon. Make that mechanic for a few random hidden and rare guns you find on missions.
The goal should be to make ALL the guns really fun and satisfying to use. Flame thrower should act as AOE damage with the burning affect on the ground make enemies AVOID the fire, likes it napalm. The effect it has in game, even AFTER the 50% buff, isn't worth it. When a mob of enemies charges you and you use the flame thrower, it should cause them to back off from the fire damage and scatter. The weapon should have a unique use, burning up a choke point, and really making that inflamed ground fire do damage to creatures as they pass through it. Grenade launcher should have upgrades that make you fire further, or fire burst shots of 3. Liberator should have upgrades for larger caliber rounds, that do more damage. The possibilities for gun customization is wasted.
Again, every weapons should have its own upgrade tree and options / attachments, and special use case at the higher difficulties. As of now, the player base is ignoring 80% of the games guns that they unlocked.

I'm gonna have to disagree. I think the biggest issue facing the game is how they handled the balance patch. Agree or disagree with it, it was divisive and the way the staff at Arrowhead talked down to their customers was pretty shitty. Personally, I agree with the balance changes for the most part. But the game is in a buggier, less playable state than it was in previously, and it's starting to make me unwilling to play. Then I look at the way Arrowhead is high on their success and sniffing their own farts like they can do nothing wrong, and I just go do other shit instead.

  • @Darthcamper

Still not gonna watch the rest of the video but I'll give you some more algo fuel just for the ratio I am seeing to grow. 5 reasons your title alone is wrong
    1) Even if the industry does react as we all want and reverse course on these terrible business practices that'll take time
    2) The first game which has been around since roughly if not before the time Pokemon Go dropped was possibly just now shut down (I haven't even bothered to look into whether they did or not I just know Super Earth was lost)
    3) Meme staying power coupled with current day politics makes the game setting/world relevant
    4) The devs still say we are in the learning stages. There is still SOOOOOO much over the horizon that I barely see and I only see some of that due to playing the first game
    5) It is fucking fun. People are truly enjoying it for the game play and while a big part of the discussion is the live-service done right that wouldn't even matter if the game was shit, it isn't and I would even feel comfortable saying numbers provide evidence that it is being enjoyed, therefore objectively good as the desired result was achieved, and then that expectation was shattered beyond what they thought possible. Gamers don't tolerate shit games from companies and devs that are unknown to them. They will tolerate it from established long running series and IPs, Call of Duty or anything Star Wars are good examples of this.

Yeah I see that it got an update and am happy about it! Great game. However, prior to this update, it did in fact, reach a player low since its rise and is now, headed back to that low. However, I’m unphased by this now because Even if it dies for a while, if it gets new life at any point, I still won’t receive any sort of credit for my, until this update, spot on prediction on its falling numbers. Kinda like how “propaganda” is always referred to a standpoints opposing side spreading its ideology whereas, of course, one’s own side is spreading an indisputable truth. It is what it is. I posted this at a time the only acceptable opinion was helldivers will be played for eternity 😂 hope you have a good day brother! See you out there spreading democracy.

Thats not what a solved game is.
The fun of this game for a part comes from progress but the main dish if fun comes from the matches.
There is a near infinite amount of ways a match can go. Sure you do the same things but clearing the nearet small outpost on the same mission type can go very different depending on rng. This would be the same as calling dark souls a solved game because it has a level and equipment cap.

So, in other words, either games have to be ridiculous cash grabbing casino machines full of MTXs, circus cosmetics, hello kitty helmets and rainbow unicorn clothing using timers counting down EVERYTHING, from battlepass duration to shop item rotations so that FOMO kicks in, priced 80$ or more just to enter the game with bare bones content or they can be great full of content without cashgrabs but people will abandon them because they can't have an artificial number going upwards to grind for?
People forgot how to have fun instead preffering to slave away, no lifing "games" that simply have them increase some arbitrary number by doing repetitive things all in the name of game 'progression'? Is that it?
Helldivers 2 is pure fun. It's very fair in its monetization practices and should be rewarded. It's already past expectations regarding sales and that a good thing. People getting bored with a game, moving on to another one is a very normal thing to do.

I think this is a modern day gamer issue than a game issue. We have become so accustomed to having to chase a carrot on a stick, that when a game comes in and doesn't dangle treats in front of our face 24/7 we don't know what to do with ourselves? What is fun? I am just here to get all the things, if they run out of things then I leave to go find more things. Look at how many zoomers are confused af that they used to make games without cosmetics/battle passes/achievements.
I think games are allowed to just be fun and not having to have some new trinket to chase constantly. Frankly it is what burned me out on MMOs like WoW/FF14, the games aren't fun. Its a slog/grind to get the next best thing and just when you get the best thing, oh the next new best thing is right around the corner. HD2 lets me get all the neat shit fairly quickly and just focus on having fun and trying out different things. We as gamers just don't know what to do anymore when there isn't a constant treadmill and that reflects more poorly on us, than Arrowhead as a developer. Even SoE fell prey to this with PlantSide 2. Each class, each vehicle, even each primary and secondary had unlocks to keep people on the treadmill instead of focusing on the war itself.
Our brains have been damaged by the dopamine hits we have taken over the last 10-15 years of gaming but when you look back further in the past to games like Unreal/Titanfall/BF Bad Company 2 - these games didn't have a constant treadmill of new stuff, cash shop items and still maintained because they were fun to pit yourself against and with other players.
Also don't really understand how this game is supposedly going to fail when it has all ready proven its been a success. With the warbonds basically being purchasable entirely in game, through the game it is pretty clear the developers did not intend to make cash through Super Credits and its more likely they see SC purchases as a donation or was some requirement to be on the PS5. I have had the game for maybe 3 weeks, 50 odd hours and probably only 30 playing and have a little over 1600 SC entirely through in game. New warbond every 4 weeks that never expires. It is really weird the first game that isn't actively trying to bend us over and fuck us for every penny is somehow going to fail specifically because it doesn't do that. The same behavior we will all screech about being predatory from CoD/Fortnite, this game doesn't do that AND plans to roll out additional enemies, factions, weapons, stratagems and upgrades for free as the war progresses - abject failure because it doesn't fuel our monkey brains with enough shiny to keep up with our poopsocking.
I personally have everything unlocked shipwise/stratagems, I have all the weapons I care about currently and waiting for new warbond to see if theres any cool stuff in there. I still play every morning before work and after work because its fun. I have met some fun doods from matchmaking just shooting the breeze while we nuke bots and bugs and make an effort to join one another's games when we see they are online. It lets me have all the fun of a PvE shooter, without the gear threadmill of Destiny/Division while enjoying the social aspects of old ass MMOs like FFXI or EQ.
Anyway, game is fine, gamers are broken. Rant over.

Have you played Helldivers 1? The community is the reason the game stayed alive. Also, you have to realise (i would arge) the community for the first one cannnot conpare in size. Having servers be bad on lauch is something of a trial for games now (not saying i like it any more than anyone else). Lastly, the game is made to be completely expandable. Could have more enemies, to different mission types, and ofcourseball thw new weapons.
But i cant disagree with is being pretty easy for the game to falloff. Lets all hope it wont tho

How can it be you experience everything there is to experience when its a live battle controlled by someone else. We are fighting a human in controll of multiple armies. What those armies do changes based ona persons mood. What hell divers has done is creat a game that is purly PVE but is in essence PVP as all the enemy armies are in fact controlled by a human dev. What strategy will they take, will they make it to super earth? Will we have to fight on super earth, what happens if bugs and robots try to enhabit the same planet? There are so many options that can happe in the future of a live war map based game. I don't see unlocking all the content as beating the game, I see that as starting the game. The real good game does not start until you have finished the progress and can openly wage full war with no restrictions on the enemy. All that said, if they don't fix consistency issues in game play it will suffer player loss.

coldest takes of all time, honestly it seems like you haven't even read dev logs or applied logic? why would a dev team whos first game peak was 7,000 on Steam expect 400,000 players on their sequel? and if people loved the hype of long lines the Disney fast pass wouldn't exist. Also unbelievable what people call a "simple gameplay loop" cs, plant bomb or defuse. mw, kill people, or capture point. minecraft, break block place block. thousands of players have thousands of hours in these. It's about the little differences in each runa and game didn't think this was a necessary explanation. You have COD brainrot and its really showing in this video. You say it yourself people are stuck in this line of thought...why dont we just try to change the way we think instead of continuing to stuff AAA devs?? And the last thought about the FREE new warbond while hyping 40 dollar elden ring DLC gross.
