  • One of the most fascinating studies in what happens when a boxer takes on a kickboxer who has a style of kickboxing very different than your standard Muay Thai or Dutch-style. In this dojo challenge match, Taiwanese boxer Xiao Pan aka @BOXPAN goes to seek out a sparring session with One Championship veteran Florian Garel. Florian's striking is Karate and Savate based. Xiao Pan tries his luck sticking to only boxing while enduring the crazy kick combinations of Florian's savate. Let's see the beauty of savate style kickboxing as well as appreciate what Xiao Pan did correctly with boxing! Leave your comments below and let me know what you saw and what you want to see next!

    Savate didn't grow to its full potential because it was not professional in France, meaning the fighters (the "tireurs") had to get a regular job to pay the bills and were doing that only because of their passion for it. Turning PRO meant switching to Kickboxing or Muay Thaï.
    It has always been knowned as one of the best school for standup fighting and I wish I had been curious enough to choose that instead of Karate 1st.
    There are specific rules for you to score when kicking (the way you prepare your kick, you can only hit with the shoe etc .). When you come from Karate or Muay Thaï, it's frustrating and you are never at the "proper" distance to throw your own attacks. Result, you get lit up by so many kicks before you even realize 😀. They are all about combinations and movement. It's beautiful.

    The boxer can eliminate this man's kicks simply by closing distance and fighting up close in the pocket. Well, that in general is what you'd tell an infighter facing an outfighter. Does that work 100% of the time? Nope. In fact, it probably works less often than it doesn't because it's hard to close the distance with a really good outfighter with an excellent footwork. Meanwhile, you'll be eating kicks and punches as you try to close in on him. At the end of the day, it's the skill level that matters, of course. There's one more thing, though. Savate works really well with shoes. The whole point of kicking of this style is that they wear relatively heavy shoes with pointed hard tops. What they do is obliterate the liver with precision kicks in those. It really doesn't take much of effort in that kind of shoe to do that if you're really accurate, which is what they train 24/7. This guy held off a lot of times during this spar if you pay close attention

    As someone who started at a traditional boxing gym and transitioned into Muay Thai then mma, I’d argue that showing these videos show almost the same extent of people who don’t know how to grapple going into a wrestling match… show boxers who know how to check at the very least or even how to chain their punches with their kicks and vice versa… you’ll see how boxing can definitely be efficient in non boxing rules. I’ve won my first few kickboxing fights by being self aware with my checks and using kicks to close my distance then ending the show with boxing combinations. Hopefully I can record a sparring session sometime this week and send to you.

      As soon as you start dabbling in checks and kicks, you aren't even a boxer anymore what are you about? And Savateurs can punch well, so your point is moot.

    Savate is a legit martial art I remember I was sparring against my sambo coach he also does savate as well one time in the kickboxing class i was sparring against my coach he was using savate and I was using muay thai he was very unpredictable when I was sparring against him got some graceful kicks which I had a hard time checking them and dodging them as well when I closed the distance and had him in the thai clinch about to throw some knee strikes he ended up switch to judo and use a leg trip on me yes he also have a background in judo as well but I ended up landing on my ass when he used a judo leg trip lol but yeah savate is a pretty awesome martial art.

    Queixada is the name of the Capoeira kick you were trying to remember. From a side stance, the kick make a crescent movement across the head of the opponent to the outside in which then you have options to land it, whether back to ginga, the opposite side stance to throw another with the opposite foot, slide out into esquiva baixa, etc. Capoeira sparring Savate would be awesome, so would combining the two. There's also a Japanese martial art similar to Capoeira called Taido.

    P.S. I love watching a Savature kick circles around some slow, every technique most be thrown at 200% power, Muay Thai guy.

    3:02 4 kick combo, yes the fourth kick would have hurt him, possible Ko , but it is the SECOND one that is truly brutal, liver kick with point of savate shoe. Small reinforced object hitting your liver and ribs with the force of the legs in a snapping motion. You will go down. That liver "point of shoe" kick and multiple attacks to the knee joint + rasping down the shin of opponent with shoe edge are typical for savate.

    • @Limemill
      @Limemill Před rokem +4

      You don't really mix them, although you can cross-train of course. But the two approaches to fighting are kinda the opposite. Savate is all about an insane outboxing-style footwork, an impeccable sense of distance and timing that is drilled 24/7, and uber precise kicks in hard top shoes to the vulnerable parts of the body, such as the liver (which is a 100% knockout when done well). It also uses a lot of dodges (you can actually see how the savateur dodged the counterpunch to the body at some point in this video by ever so slightly blocking it from above with a glove while essentially rounding his back and sucking in his belly to avoid the punch by mere centimetres / an inch or so. Muay Thai has a rather simplistic footwork but imposes an unrelenting pressure, delivers naked-foot kicks that may be less precise but are devastatingly powerful and tries to square it off whenever possible to meet the opponent in the pocket and turn on those deadly elbows and knees. These are two styles that are at the opposite ends of the spectrum and I'd say it makes more sense to choose one that works for your body type and natural inclinations rather than try to cross train and switch from one to the other

    • @rory2698
      @rory2698 Před rokem

      @@LimemillI wouldn't say it's 100% impossible. Check out Muay Thai fighter Saenchai if you haven't. He has a really unorthodox style that utilizes evasive footwork, jumping switch stances, feints, precice counter-striking even occasionally chambered/ jumping kicks.
      His style is comparable to (but not equal or above) Savate and most kickboxing styles imho. Granted, Saenchai is elite tier and the only Muay Thai guy I know that can fight like that. Your arguement stands for the most part.

      Savate Kicks tends to get blended in a lot of other styles, Karate and Dutch style Kickboxing were enormously influenced by Savate (no wonder Gerard Gordeau competed as a "Savate" practitioner at UFC1), JKD of course, you can see it in MMA and as you mentioned even some Muay Thai fighters add a Savate like twist to their game.
