  • Let's discuss how to harmonize colors and really make them sing. In today's video, I am showing you how to get a glorious color palette from a random selection of colors using three reliable approaches. When your colours work together, your paintings will sing. Let me know in the comments if you have any of your own tricks to harmonize your own palette.

Thanks Louise! I’ve seen these concepts taught before by others, but in less than 5 minutes you’ve helped it sink in if you will. Not sure if my brain just needed one more time to finally get it, but I do know you are meant to teach these concepts and I’m so grateful you found your path and are willing to share and lead others. ❤

As always Louise thank you for sharing yourself so generously. This is brilliant and a great reminder especially when one feels stuck. As I encounter more artists and start building my local network, your name comes up again and again and I smile knowingly as they gush about the influence you’ve had on them. I think this speaks volumes about how highly you’re regarded not only as an artist but as a human being. If you have days of doubt please know that the opening you use, how you help other artists…. Is absolutely the truth.

Although I’ve been painting for about 20 years, I never knew how I could mix colors together so that they were harmonious with each other in watercolors. You have opened 😮 4:25 my eyes to the possibilities and I’m excited for the explorations. I’m going to engage in I’m not gonna paint anything, I’m just gonna play with colors and see what I get. Ive already sent for my flashcards and I’m ready to go. I’m hoping some other ladies in the workshop will be interested in joining me in this new venture for me. Thank you for opening my eyes to the possibilities.

OK, have to make another comment. Watching this again along with the wonderful quote from Ray Bradbury in today's news letter has saved me. I know what colors look good together; I need to go have fun & quit thinking about it. Thanks a million!

Thank you, Louise. The making a 'goop' method worked for me. I like playing with different colours, especially high-key colours but I never worked out how to harmonise and kept getting garish outcomes and I would then go back to duller colours or neutrals. Thank you again for sharing your wonderful knowledge.

I like the term "gunge!" I keep all my scrapings when painting in a pile in the bottom corner of my palette; I call it "palette grey" but from now on I'm going to use your word for it, haha.
I paint representationally, and use the gunge pile as a universal add-in for backgrounds. Foreground objects or subjects are more vivid than their setting, which makes them pop a bit in a subtle way (my foreground figures are always the product of a lot of mixing, too...a "lesser gunge?" ha!).
Great tip, and I might experiment with a random palette and gunge for some quick acrylic studies I'm lining up. Thanks!

I tried that at one point but it was aimed at creating harmonious and muted landscape colours and the “gunj” was the base colour and the individual colors were added to it to pull it toward whatever color I was aiming for.
Having said that your explanation added a better reason for doing it that way as most other demonstrators (I hesitate to call CZcams people teachers) either didn’t know the underlying reason or didn’t care to share it.

What a great, great video! And timely, for me, as I'm getting more of my artwork on restaurant and coffee shop walls. I have had some disappointing sales and I think one of the reasons is that some of my work is looking so similar to other pieces and I have been quite frustrated about the sameness of the color scheme. I am busy today, preparing to hang some art at a restaurant here in Seattle. After tomorrow morning, I can think again about new works and playing with colors as you have been doing. Thank you so very much for teaching us "lesser mortals" (ha ha!) how to look at our art processes in new ways!
