In today's video, I want to chat about something that's near and dear to every artist's heart: the so-called "rules" of creating art. I'm a firm believer that there are no hard and fast rules in art. In fact, whenever I come across one, I make it my mission to break it and see where it takes me. One rule that often gets thrown around is about the color black so today I want to share 3 really co...

So stick around for this vide...

fun! green rarely finds its way onto my palette unless there is blue in it. be refreshing to try the more natural earthy greens for contrast. Thanks!
Thank you SO MUCH!
Louise this video has got my creative juices singing!! I loved seeing how you build up your portrait…. I’m just now beginning to learn that nothing is too precious to paint over….. that is so freeing …. I’ve just purchased some sketchbooks on Vi tex(a real bargain!and I think I will dedicate one to playing with faces. !!
Louise, I loved this video… so much to work with! I want to thank you for all that you so generously share for free. I subscribe to your newsletter and can say to anyone who doesn’t…. do it now! Full of generous advice and tips and interviews with other artists…. I love your style of art and your teaching style and can’t thank you enough Louise! 🤗🤗🤗
I try not to be negative to myself but I used to think that I am almost colorblind for shades. I never see what colour is dominant or which one to add to mix shade I like. I was a little stressed about it but watching your videos I realised that I am just a beginner and need much much practice. Your advices are so useful and encouraging that I get a wish to explore and learn, to dive much deeper without a fear of failure. Thank you so much. 🙏🏻💜
The deep red/yellow and light red/yellow are confusing to me because the original red/yellow are not true red/yellow as primary colors.
Thank you!
I found a big block for me changing the way I paint is acceptance. I find it difficult since I finally decided to work on abstracts, most of the people, buyers, family and friends like my old realistic style better. I still find it very challenging but I know my heart is in abstract work I have always loved. I had decided that I don't care if anyone "gets it" I just need to do it.
Thank you so much for this video. I've seen several videos like this explaining "quick and easy" abstract art. I fully agree with you that is not art...it's a decoration. I think this is why people think abstract art is so easy. I think like you that good abstract art has feelings, emotions, or a message it is not just something pretty to hang on your wall.
Omg “ losing my will to live” 😂😂😂 This was really helpful, just like your green one I loved!
Glad you liked it!!
Brilliant & interesting thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
Color mixing videos brighten my day! A very fun way to start a studio day & a fabulous practice if you only have 20-30 mins Enjoying the "twenty minute" masterclass
Have fun!
💛♥🧡
Fabulous and timely. Almost eerie that it came on a day when Im trying to get a certain orange. Sort of a rusty cinnabar. Without success, I’ll add. But this video takes me right back into the studio to continue the fun of trying more combos all in the spirit of the joy of color mixing.
try two warm colours (and maybe a little bit of desaturation with blue or black )
Thank you for this example Louise. I am reading Blue and Yellow Don’t Make Green , second edition, Michael Wilcox and beginning to understand why mixing colors is complicated. Your video really helps. I requested the book from our library for those who want to know more.
Honestly, I don't think it is complicated. And I don't think you need to read to learn --- just sit and do this over and over and you'll know all you need to know x
Fabulous sunny bright oranges! Perfect antidote for a dreich, wet day in Edinburgh. Thanks Louise🤗💜💫
You’re welcome 😊
Love this Louise. Lots of interesting ephemera
Glad you enjoyed it!
Loved it. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
starting to lose the will to live over orange! hahahahahahahaha!!!

Glad you liked it! 🧡
Is brown really just dark orange, and black is really just dark blue? 2:20 Might not be chalky if you use lead white or zinc. Not sure about Lithopone (PW5)
Yes most Brown like Burnt Orange or Burnt Sienna are dark muted oranges. Black can contain up to 60% blue!
Love oranges. Thanks ❤
Me too! 🧡🧡
I do too. But I'm a Type 2 diabetic and... 😂😂. Just kidding! I love oranges as fruit AND the various shades/hues of orange.
I am inspired! Thank you Louise for this gift!
You are so welcome!
Thank you Louise for your extremely helpful advice on greens. 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
This was such a great tutorial! I’ve only recently discovered you and being very new to abstract and all things painting, I find myself continually binge watching your channel. I’m patiently waiting for Art Tribe and Find Your Joy to open up in the meantime. You’re a great teacher! Will Art Tribe include more in-depth lessons about color? Thanks for sharing your talent and knowledge!
Yes just TALK A LOT
Your hair looks great here, this style is definitely your style. (soz to say something personal, not my biz, but its so much better here in my humble op).
Awww thank you! ❤
Your paintings make so much sense to me. They express your visions so perfectly. So inspirational. Thankyou
You are so welcome and glad you think so!
week 12 cvp. compeltely 'stuck' in the middle of a bunch of boards, and first series! Thanks louise! 'cannot succeed, learn, without making a mess". amen!
This was bloody brilliant, thank you so much ❤
You're so welcome! Glad you enjoyed it!
I love mixing greens, before starting painting it never occurred to me how many different shades of green there could be! : ) I agree with you about tube greens, most are pointless! Buuut.. there are a couple of single pigment greens I love, which are chromium oxide, and shadow green (only available in acrylic by Holbein I think, it's stunning!) Ohh there is one mixed tube green I like too, W&N olive green, but that's it I'm not allowed to buy any more tube greens 😂 I also will intermix them a bit with the other colours I'm using for harmony. I got some lovely surprise dark greens from mixing phthalo blue with burnt sienna, I recommend trying this if you haven't already.. confused me for a moment as I was expecting neutral greys then realised the orange was neutralising the blue part whilst allowing the 'green shade' of the phthalo to come out! Thank you for your inspiring videos, and for introducing me to the yellow and black greens, love these!
What a great piece! I love how you talked through this. I’ve been looking for a video such as this! Thank you for sharing your talents!
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching!
What kind of colors are you using? How can you blend them together? Are they acrylics and what kind are they? I have so many questions! I'm still working on this abstract painting...I've always used markers, many styles but I want to use the acrylics.
Hi Kelly yes they are acrylics. Questions are the best way to learn!
Incredible !
Aww thank you so much!
I felt quite emotional watching this! I'm 58 and ready for a change over the next couple of years. Thank you ❤
Awww glad to hear it resonated with you!
Thank You so much...sometimes I feel like I am just painting what others want me to. This has given me the inspiration to make some art that is calling me to make!
Yes! Art should always be about you and what YOU love! ❤
It all sounded so complicated to me when I was doing an A level art, I asked my teacher why she didn't just teach that you used all three primaries to neutralise a mix of two primaries. Her answer was simply "Oh Fay, I never had you down as a rebel". lol
I am so happy to find you Louise. I live in New Zealand. I will be looking into joining one of your online courses. I do view making Art as a way to release my creative drive and also relieve stress/depression. You definitely teach in a style that resonates with me. Thank you so much for making these videos, they help me to overcome Imposter Syndrome and the negative inner voice (i can't draw, definitely not in a realist way anyway), but i know Art is not just about making photo realistic portraits❤
Wonderful and I'm so happy to help! Thank you for watching ❤
Loved this demo...could really appreciate the improvements in depth and contrast...so many images popped out for me 😊
This was lovely , I seen in a film I can’t remember what it was on but a guy in prison painted solely using his fingers and his art was fantastic so your vision can really take you anywhere . Lovely abstract painting dear, loved it.
Playback speed 2.0. Helps a lot.
💜💜 Thank you. Mixing purples is always fun!
Very concise explanation. Thank you 😊
Absolutely right Louis, other people's opinions are business of yours 😮...even though they might hope they are. To each their own ❤
Thank you for sharing, and the encouragement to do some mixing & recording each time I come to do some art. I can see the real value in this and will follow that advice - starting today ❤
You are so welcome and I would love to hear how it goes for you!
So, I’ve been following this through and wow I’m genuinely surprised by how it’s opened my eyes! From having a basic “oh yes, I know blue and red make purple etc”, I’m now “oh my, look at all the different colours these different blues etc make mixed with these different reds!!” And then I’m noticing the ones I like and don’t like so much, and getting ideas of how nicely certain colours go together in my eyes. Who knew such a simple exercise could have such a valuable impact. Much appreciated, thank you 🙏🏻
On an amusing note, the title of this video made me instantly think of the band incubus. Iykyk.
Love how you teach, Louise. Thank you. I like to work in series. I’m currently diving into Sylvia Plath’s poetry. Planning to paint a series of abstracts in reaction to her works.
Aww thank you so much Priscilla!
Thank you for this video. Mixing colors can be intimidating, because we have the desire, even need, to "get it right". Humans crave certainty; uncertainty makes us very uncomfortable. But life is filled with uncertainty; from ordering from a menu at a restaurant (nothing like the feeling when the dish you always order changes!) to choosing a romantic partner. Mixing colors should be approached with a feeling of playfulness, a " I wonder what will happen if I mix...?" I never, until now, knew about mixing black and yellow. So, once again, thank you for encouraging experimentation!
So glad I could help. We should never be afraid to experiment :)
Very nice and so beautiful painting 👏
Thank you so much 😀
💚💚💛💛💙💙
Glad you liked it!!
