Over the years I have watch a lot of tutorials about understanding and mixing colors, your videos are by far the best I have seen and I will recommend them to all new painters
Wow, thank you!
I love this! I have to admit that I have this odd fear that I will mix a color that I will adore and will never get back to no matter how hard I try. I don't know why I would feel this way, but it definitely keeps me from going absolutely wild in my mixes most of the time.
You can always get back. Just note the base colours you used and then mess around with them until you get back. The more you do it, the better you get at finding any colour
I so agree!! I’m the same and as a result, I have a box full of pre mixed paints ….that I still don’t understand how they were created and cost me a fortune.
What a fun exercise this is, I’m definitely playing with this asap!
The more you play, the more you understand how it all works and you will be able to mix your colour again.
I can completely understand that. Push past fear anyway.
This limited palette produced some beautiful variations of color. Apparently I don’t go “far enough” when mixing. Thank you for showing the colors I can achieve if I just go a little further. ❤
You are so welcome!
I'm hooked on your teachings Louise. I have learned more from you in just a few short edisodes than I have in all the research I've done since I started painting in 2021. You are an amazing educator! 🌹
Wow what a compliment. Thank you Rene!
i absolutely love these restricted palettes. Please make more of these videos! Thanks so much for the inspiration!
Louise, you are the goddess of art, thank you.
I love it! I just begun painting- I normally have been creating art on the computer with Adobe apps. I have been wrestling with color harmony to really tie my art work together. Thank you for unlocking the mystery.❤
Wow I bet it is neat to see art on a computer like that! I'm so glad my video helped. ❤
Louise: this technique would be fabulous to help someone create "brand colors" for a website or business (and my color theory prof would adore you!)
That really is a great idea and I never thought of that! Thanks for watching.♥
The greys..so beautiful!🌸
I completely agree! ❤
Hi Louise! Ellen from LI . I’ve hibernated from my studio for 5 months but enough is enough. You. brought me back “ to my painting life” 2 years ago from a much longer hibernation. I’m forever grateful having found you 2 years ago at about this very time. I loved the layering video , this one and ALL the ones prior. Life brings curves ,as you know , however there comes a time to hold on tight and return back to painting. I love the peace it gives my mind . Thank you.
Wow I am so glad I could inspire you in that way! ♥
This is just wonderful! It’s such a great way of finding stunning colour combos.
Thank you so much and I'm glad you liked it!
Great to see what you can do with just a few colors!
It saves so much money when you can just buy a few in bulk :)
Love watching you mix colors. I started with a limited palette and need to go back to that. Thanks for sharing you knowledge, skills, and love of art with us!
You are so welcome! Happy to have you as a watcher!
Somehow I always love the turqoise- orange vibration for me like the vibration of the birth of early mornings and celebration of life 🧡🩵
They look so beautiful together don't they? ♥
I've noticed that a lot of the art I'm drawn to right now has very limited colors used and mixing for harmony in the palette. Thank you for showing us how it's done.
So glad I could help provide some insight.
I seen many artists talk and this and demonstrate, but today it sunk in due to the limited palate. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
You are so welcome!
Great video! I really loved the video where you painted the face from your course somewhat abstracted. I couldn’t get back to it to tell you how much I liked it. Wish I could do the course. It looks amazing.
Glad you enjoyed it! Happy painting!
Outstanding colors. My favorites are yellow, green and pink. I will do that practice. Thank you😊
Glad you enjoyed it! ❤
This is exciting to view. Very helpful indeed, Louise.
Glad it was helpful Charlotte. Thanks for watching!
I am very new to abstract painting, I am so glad to have found you!! This is so great!

Very useful. I love the advice not to buy green paint!
Glad it was helpful! Happy painting!
This is Fantastic Louise!! Such perfect timing for me today.
So glad it helped!
Very good tip on harmony and colors
Glad you think so!
Fascinating... Color Theory? I have needed this kind of color help forever! Thank-you for this, very helpful.
what about it?
Color is so much fun
Yes it is!
Hi Louise. This is the second time I've watched this video - it's such a great one. What amazing colours you can mix just from a chosen few. Thanks so much for sharing this. Very cool. Cheers, Deb (NZ)
Aww glad you liked it Deb!
This is fab. I’m fired up and going to do this tomorrow. I have a stack of those index cards I got in Wilkinsons. Seeing you create the colours makes so much sense and something of a relief as there have been plenty of times I’ve sat down to mix colours and ended up with my entire palette looking muddy. Thank you.
Yes I must make a video about muddy colours- usually it's because you mixed 3 primaries together but it can also be because you just picked the wrong starting colours x
Excellent video, will definitely use this technique.. Thank you Louise.
Glad it was helpful!
Wonderful tutorial, thank you for sharing
You’re welcome 😊
Wonderful. Thank you. Such a lovely array of colors and what fun.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Lovely colors! Very nice video!
Thank you! Cheers!

A very useful exercise, despite my insurmountable aversion to this particular colour palette. Thank you
haha - just choose what you like
Between you and Bob burridge artists would learn all they ever need ... ty.
Awww that is so nice of you to say. Thank you!
Excellent tutorial for all levels of experience!
Glad you think so!
I learned this from Nick Wilton but somehow related so much more to it with you. TY.😍
Glad it was helpful!♥
That was terrific! I’m so afraid of color mixing, but this will help!
Glad it was helpful!
Love the tags with a whole idea it means if you forget which colour you mixed together to get a colour you can write it on the back of the card, brilliant!
Yes exactly :)
Sehr guter Tipp,vielen Dank!😊
Thanks Louise. Happy birthday soon. I think of you with deep gratitude SO OFTEN. You are the most generous and gifted teacher ever. OX Keldwyn
Awww thank you so much! Your comments mean the world to me. ♥

I love this video Louise! Thanks for sharing. Colormixing can be challenging but you make it easy to understand. I tried a mix and it's so nice to se the colours harmonize.
Looking forward to more mixing video's. 🙂
Glad it was helpful!
I’ve done this before but love the card idea. I’m going to try this maybe making some “recipe” notes on the back of them. TFS
That's a great idea!
I can’t see this enough. I always get something new. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is a fabulous video! I have been painting for a while and have never tried to mix so many colors. Definitely giving this a try today!
Wonderful! Be sure to let me know how it works out!
@ThisPaintingLife I did two big sheets (divided into 16 section), one with blue, yellow, white, a black and one with red, yellow, etc.
I really Loved and enjoyed this .

Thank you so much for making this video!
You are so very welcome!
This is brilliant and has helped me enormously in mixing colours. Its lovely to have the confidence that they will all work together. I especially like Grey's and this is an amazing way to mix them. Thank you x
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Great information! Thanks for sharing 👏👏👏
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
I love this! It proves we don't need all of the colors, just a few we want to use and the many variations they can create. 🙂
Absolutely!!
Golden should give me stock die the number of colors I bought in the past. Going to mic my own related colors from now on. Thanks, Louise.
Glad I could help!
Thanks for sharing this, I love mixing colours but sometimes feel hesitant about what base colour palette to use. You certainly give me a push into more experimenting!❤🌿
You are so welcome!
So helpful. Thank you
You are welcome - happy to share :)
Very inspiring
Thank you Cheryl!
Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Super useful! Thanks 😊
You're welcome!
Good one Louise. Sometimes I worry that I will drive myself mad with my colour experimentations. You demonstrate the practice of having a method to the madness - thanks you.
Thank you! Cheers!
I’ve been thinking about trying to do some mixing using the Zorn palette
That's a great palette!
This is great! I'm going to try these exact colour combo's today. For a splash of something bold, I may add some areas of pink. Thank you!
Sounds great!
Thank you Louis love this lesson of mixing colors.Learn a lot!!!
I love this Louise…great idea to get the decks of card stock - do you simply note what palette you were using?
Yes if I feel the need to, I will just place a quick note on it.
Love
Thank you Leanne!
This color mixing video is awesome. I hope you do more of these. I wonder how you use the cards? Do you group them by the original palette colors? I am curious about documentation because I have a bad memory. So I know I need to write things down and love to learn how others do it. Thanks for this video. PS Just read your newsletter and wishing you the best as you take time to invest in yourself.
Hi Carla, here's a video that answers your question :)
czcams.com/video/MQjrycIOqKc/video.html
Hi Louise, first of all thank you for this. Regarding mixing greens, my only fear is that when I need more of it, I might not be able to create it in quantities. I guess the solution to this would be to take a note on the reverse side of the tags, but I fear that I’m just not that organised. 😂
You are so welcome! Being organized is a work in progress for most of us creatives 😂
I love this, thank you Louise, I'm learning so much from your videos. Do you have a rule as to how to pick your basic five colours?
So glad you are enjoying them! I don't have a rule but I say always start with what draws your eyes and just make sure they are complimentary to each other. 🖌
Louise, thankyou for your insights and enthusiasm which is especially helpful Could you explain the obvious please - as you set up your palette do you use greaseproof paper over a mid grey My apologies if you have already explained your initial steps in a different video
It's greaseproof paper over wet paper towels on a plastic tray x
Thank you so much for this. Color is one thing I really struggle with, and the little tags and limoted pallette are a brilliant idea! I can write the "recipe" on the back of each so I know how to make it again. May I ask, what is the palette you are working on? It looks similar to one I have. Thanks for all the wonderful content you provide!
You are so welcome! It's a plastic dinner tray covered in wet paper towels, with tracing paper over top. It keeps the paints from drying out
@@ThisPaintingLife oh, easy peasy! Thanks so much.
I love your colour selection! I don’t have Pthalo Turquoise. Can you please help me with a substitute out of Pthalo Blue, Cobalt, Cyan or Ultramarine? Thank you 😊
Pthalo turquoise is made up up phthalo Blue and Phthalo Green pigments, plus a small addition of Zinc White. You can't replicate it without those pigments, so if you like it I would suggest buying some. OR you can experiment with making your own limited pallete from the blues you have x
@@ThisPaintingLife thank you 😊 Love your art and love you 🥰
What about pthalo green? Love this especially with a little white
definitely use it then!
G r eat video! 🙏👍😁
Thank you 😋
Louise, Could you give us the link to the tags you buy on Amazon? What a great idea! Thank you!
Hi Mar, I don't always use the same ones but these are very similar to the ones I use www.amazon.com/MotBach-Vocabulary-Learning-language-Greeting/dp/B09MCPJN5D/ref=sr_1_42?crid=8P5NN6FBJ30Z&keywords=index+cards+white&qid=1681475355&sprefix=index+cards+white+%2Caps%2C115&sr=8-42
Thank you Louise! I ordered some.
Do u write the color combinations on back of card?
I don't but you can :)
Hi. Do you ever use just warm colours, or cool colours, that have been harmonised?
Generally I use both as the contrast between the two really makes me feel good x
For years I limited myself to either a warm or a cool palette. "Never mix warms w/cools or you'll get mud" haunted me. My work was technical to the point of Boring. Now I use warms and cools and the neutralized tints and tones integrate the palette. Just another level of harmony.
Then how do you use this information? Do you use it as reference material for a painting?
Yes, when I've found a limited palette that I like, I generally use it as the base for a series of paintings. I add pops of other colours, but primarily I will work with that palette
@@ThisPaintingLife Thank you.
You kept saying Blue, but you dudnt have any blue on your pallete. You had a Turqoise. Is that what you meant?
If you need to write it down, that will help
I used to write things down but after a while it just sinks in
