Royal Enfield Shotgun 650 review - new A2 cruiser tested in Los Angeles

  • Royal Enfield's latest bike is a heavily revised version of the existing Super Meteor 650, with new suspension, bodywork, altered geometry, and styling. The heart of the bike though is still that same 650cc parallel twin-cylinder engine as found in the Super Meteor Continental GT and Interceptor.
    To find out how the new bike performs, Royal Enfield flew us out to the sprawling metropolis of Los Angeles, for a one-day riding launch starting in the Downtown area and ending on the stunning Angeles Crest Highway.

      Royal Enfield have made big strides on the finish and detailing of its models in recent years, it really shows on models like this, but even the latest gen' Himmy 450 has a much more premium vibe to it than the outgoing 411cc bike.

    Anyone who buys this model, and owns in for a while will eventually experience that "now I get it" feeling. I see the Shotgun 650 as being a cool looking, practical, minimalist workhorse around town bike which pays homage to 'messenger' bikes of the past. The only colours that appeal to me are the grey & green, which are the cheaper ones, so I can't complain about that. A big thumbs up to Royal Enfield for introducing this model.

    the vibration feeling you’re getting in the mid range is a quirk of the engines ive found. 47 hp isn't bad if it has decent torque. My Honda NC700X makes 47 hp & I'm happy with it. 270 degree crank & bore & stroke is 73 X 80 so at 75 mph it's only turning 3,500 rpm. But it's 474 pounds wet. Hopefully the Shotgun is under 500 pounds.

    Sure would be nice to see a 750cc version of this. I know that RE is staying under the ridiculous HP limit for Euro and British riders but not all of us need that restriction. I rode the Super Meteor and this engine and tranny are very good. They just lack enough pull for those of us who weigh over 200lbs and still ride with a sense of purpose. Also, RE should ditch the "tripper" on their base models and put the damned speedo where it belongs. In the MIDDLE! Make a 60HP version with 60 lb ft of torque, put the speedometer where it belongs and, then, I'll buy one. Meantime, the Triumph T 100 is still calling my name.

    • @visordown
      @visordown  Před 6 měsíci +2

      Thanks for the comment! I'm sure with emissions reg's we'll see a 750cc one day, although whether it will have any more power remains to be seen!
      On the Tripper thing, in the Indian market (where most REs are sold) having a standalone Nav' is a very big deal, so I think that's driving it's use across a number of models.

    • @jroberthadden
      @jroberthadden Před 6 měsíci

      Your probably right about the Tripper, but I don't need or want any unnecessary tracking devices. Offering an entry level without it would be a good idea, I believe. I'll, probably, be adding the T100 to my stable in a few months. It seems to answer all of my needs for a classic "Brit" style bike. I absolutely love that upgraded 900 engine. Not too many bells and whistles on that version of the Bonnie, either, and the clocks look so much better than the "Speed" version. BTW, I've ridden the Crest highway with my son when he lived in Ventura. Loved that wide, fast, and curvy road. We did it during the week so it wasn't too crazy. @@visordown
