    I have just received a pressure canner from a company here in France - there were absolutely no instructions with it and there is no make on the canner; so I don't know what it is and they seem to be ignoring my e-mails to date! I am a bit freaked out as I have a pile of squash and courgettes. The problem is that there is no trivet to go on the bottom. You are sooo lucky in the US as you have so much guidance!

      Poor Janice , I understand your frustration and have had similar experiences . Now I only buy where they sell on an intelligent way like on Amazon . The seller gets a quote of his client and will watch out for bad comments . Amazon is a bit more expensive but all the things I bought there ( over 200 trough the years ) are good as well as the service afterwards .

    Thanks for your reply! I realise my canner is an unknown make from China - as the company sent me a silly video of the canner in operation lasting about 2 seconds! I could have bought one from Amazon UK as in France it is useless trying to buy a decent canner. Here all things are from China! I am usually careful with what I buy but oops I made a mistake. I will have to try it as it cost 80 euros and 50 for a trivet for the bottom.

    Hello Presto. I own one of your pressure canners, and I use it as an autoclave (sterilizer) to help me grow Oyster mushrooms. It seems to work well as a home autoclave. But, I'd like to know Your instructions about how to sterilize quart jars of grain, Agar and sugary water solutions that are used in home mushroom growing. There are tens of thousands of people who use pressure canners to sterilize stuff used in growing gourmet mushrooms and we argue about this all of the time. Thank you in advance!

    • @PrestoAppliances
      @PrestoAppliances  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Our canners meet both USDA and NCHFP guidelines for safe canning procedures. We have recently added the following insert to our instructions. (1) Use the amount of water called for in the instructions (3 quarts) if using the canner for no more than 100 minutes. If using the canner for more than 100 minutes increase the water to 4 quarts.
      (2) When pressure cooking or sterilizing at 15 psi use the pressure regulator, not the dial gauge, as the indicator of pressure. If the pressure regulator is rocking there is 15 pounds of pressure in the canner. Once the regulator is rocking, the heat needs to be reduced so the regulator rocks continuously, but slowly and gently. See video here.
      From instruction manual Important Safeguards:
      CAUTION! Do not use on any outdoor LP gas burner or a gas range over 12,000 BTU’s. Using too large of an element or over 12,000 BTU’s may soften the canner causing the bottom to warp. It may also result in property damage and/or personal injury.
      Do not use this pressure canner for other than intended use.
      Let us know if you have any further questions.

    I have now ordered a trivet for the bottom from another place - can i use a cloth underneath? until i get it as it was out of stock here - typical of France!

    • @PrestoAppliances
      @PrestoAppliances  Před rokem +2

      You could use canning rings in place of a canning rack, but cloth is not advised.

    Help I don’t know when to put the regulator on. My had a very fine stream of steam but not like any of the pictures. How long should it take to come up to steam. Have a 23 qt canner with 13 pints in it.

      @PrestoAppliances  Před rokem

      You need to vent your canner for 10 minutes before placing the regulator on the cover. Depending on the lighting in your kitchen, it may be hard to see. If you have questions, please reach out to us at 1-800-877-0441 and we can help you. We're available weekdays, 8:00 - 4:00 Central Time.

    Hello, I have the 23-quart Presto Pressure Canner. Unfortunately, here in Germany we dont have the usual american sizes of glasses.
    Exactly 5 glasses fit in the Pressure Canner. Since there is still plenty of room at the top, I would like to make a second layer on top of the bottom one.
    Is this possible? Do I need a second rack for this?
    Many greetings from Germany.

    • @PrestoAppliances
      @PrestoAppliances  Před 10 měsíci

      Hello! Thank you for reaching out. You mention the glasses are different sizes than American sizes. Could you provide a size that they measure? Volume? What brand name are the jars? We could have a private conversation via email if you prefer. Email contact1@gopresto.com. We are happy to help either via email or here.

      @@PrestoAppliances Hello and thank you for the quick reply. Weck brand glasses are widespread in Germany. We also have a lot of them that we always use. We have 1 liter and 0.5 liter jars.
      We already have a lot of this glasses, so it doesn't make sense to buy new ones.
      Especially since they will be unaffordably expensive until they are here in Germany.
      The pressure canner fits 5 large glasses. I would like to place 5 small glasses on these. However, the jars in Germany also have the lid made of glass! The question is can I put glass on glass or whether I need an second rack for this?

    What is meant by making sure digital gauge is working properly? How do you test for this?

    • @PrestoAppliances
      @PrestoAppliances  Před 8 měsíci

      The steam dial gauge should be checked annually at your local County Extension agent. You may also send your gauge to Presto for inspection. If you choose to send the gauge to us, you may send to:

    I do have a question: I also have a digital Presto and while canning my carrots the other day I forgot to take off the regulator and I canned with it on through the entire process. Is that a problem? Everythng else was perfect I completed the process to the very end. Thanks in advance.

    • @PrestoAppliances
      @PrestoAppliances  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Venting is necessary to ensure that all air is exhausted from the canner as well as the jars. Removing the regulator ensures the canner is vented. This is a food safety concern. Although your jars sealed, they were not properly canned and we cannot be certain your food is safe.

      @rosewood513 Před 8 měsíci +1

      Thank you so much for your reply. I guess I will toss them I really don't want to take a chance.. After all they are only carrots, I'll consider that practice and a lesson learned: I'll never do that again :)@@PrestoAppliances

    • @PrestoAppliances
      @PrestoAppliances  Před 8 měsíci +3

      The minimum jar requirement for both the 16 quart and 23 quart canners is 2 quarts, 4 pints or 8 half pints.
