Bighin GIULIO RENZO BIGHIN

I grew up in NYC, and saved all my allowance to buy tickets to the Met ballet. Although I took ballet lessons, I was never going to be a dancer, I lacked talent and didn't have the right body, but it made me very happy when I exercised and danced. I will never understand, now that I'm adult, why my parents would let me travel on buses and transfer to the subway system to get there on my own. But I got to see Fonteyn and Nureyev do Romeo and Juliet. I cried, and looked at the woman next to me and she was crying. It was so silent in the audience, for the longest time nobody clapped. Not a sound. And then the roar of applause. This is a play about the pain and destruction that hatred cause. And now, as an adult who knows more about the fragility of life and how precious any kind of love is, I think of the waste of life and talent of Nureyev, who died prematurely of AIDS. How Reagan swept it under the rug, how society discriminated against gays. In his short time on earth, Nureyev changed ballet forever, with Fonteyn. What else would he have accomplished, if he had lived to 90? What a waste. A bright supernova too soon gone. Their dancing still makes me cry.

Ironically Royal Opera didn't gave a penny to Dame Margo in retirement but Nureyev helped her in her last years. Brilliant talent; brilliant men.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Rudi is so funny when he says "Get on with it driver". I adore this footage. Now I understand why my best friend's mother Mrs. P. wore an ermine fur coat. She was a regular patron at La Place des Arts and never missed a Fonteyn/ Nureyev performance.Thank you for sharing this video clip.♡

I saw them in Romeo and Juliet in NYC, in the early 60s I think. I was raised in NYC, took ballet though I would never be good enough or have the right body to be professional. I'd save my allowance and spend it on tickets to ballets at the Met and Broadway shows. I'd travel alone, heaven only know why my parents would let me travel on the buses and subway to get there, I was so young. Watching them here reminded me that even when there were no visual cues, no spotlights or other indications... you just knew where Nureyev was going to enter from the wings. His energy and presence were so powerful, I could even feel it when he hadn't appeared yet. My ballet teacher once took some of us to see him backstage. He was very quiet, sweet, he said we could call him Rudi. The most beautiful face and powerful legs. It was very kind of him to let us visit, he must have been exhausted.
