Papillae are pointed structures inside a bird's mouth. Did you know that their color, size and shape can indicate nutritional health?
Neet I didn't know that and I have a pet bird. Learning something new each day.
I knew that. Learned about it from my avian vet.
when they referred to Sophia as a "mistreated macaw" I was expecting her to, very reasonably, be a complete terror. She was *so* good! so proud of her, and her new owner seems like a total gem
Awww I love that she kissed the parrots beak, that was so sweet
🥰🥰🥰
That's how to relax birds
@@draalttom844 not true
@@kelm5610 yes it is kiddo.
What a great vet tech and veterinarian. Need to be very calm around parrots. A very awesome job. Sophia did an AWESOME job too considering about her past. The new owner is very understanding. Thank you for sharing.

Little bit at a time!!
@@JNL37Dyxce5 ?
Yes! I go nuts whenever I see people doing loud baby-talk when trying to calm scared animals. It only amps them up.
@@atomicplaygirl66 !! FINALLY. Someone who UNDERSTANDS. I've given up trying to explain it to people 🙄😒
Ashley is the bomb with these birds. She's obviously very familiar with them
Right?! She’s amazing!
Wow ashley is obviously a bird whisperer. What a beautiful bird and she can tell all the nurses and her new owner care about her and won't hurt her.
That macaw clearly loves getting affection from humans which is so sweet 💕 i expected so much more screaming and flapping tbh
My 8 year old son did a school project on parrots and loved watching this video. He wanted me to tell you how thankful he is that you were able to help this beautiful Macaw. Thank you for all that you do!
I liked how they were patient with this bird , and understood its needs
Ashley was the obvious star of the exam.
0:35 BRAVE woman. Wow this lady is definitely an asset to the team. And that parrot Sophia is beyond precious. 4:33 THAT FACE!!
It's so rare to find a vet tech that is so good with birds. Ashley is the bird goddess.
Btw- The vet ain't too shabby either!*wink*
Omg this lady made me cry....what a sweet soul.
So true everybody just wants to be loved it's so good that she found somebody to love her sometimes I know I feel that way it's good to see good doctors in loving people that taken pet sitting been abused and neglected my heart goes out to you guys and hats off God bless you all he truly has with that bird

As someone who has been bitten by a macaw. It is not fun. Was feeding one that was abused and socializing her. She just chomped down on my finger pretty hard. Lots of blood lol
Are you doing ok?
Animal rescues restore my faith in humanity.

And also your vet assistant is the BEST
Ashley is absolutely amazing with Sophia! 🤩
Poor macaw, being fed on peanuts whole life
Nothing can stay healthy just on peanuts. Not even my pet rats can.
Dud the last owner think the bird was a elephant?,In glad shes in better hands ,God bless.
Did
I agree. But are peanuts bad for them? I mean nothing but peanuts yes but, like any peanuts.
@@tut28Angel I’m pretty sure peanuts as a treat is fine but shouldn’t be used as a meal for them
I hate hearing about animals being mistreated but love seeing when they form a bond of love with people who rescue them from these bad situations.
Same. I can’t take it. I’m not a vegan( wish I didn’t like meat so much ) but I am an animal advocate of animals A-Z and one of the 2 things I can’t take is animal and child cruelty.... it ruins me.
But I’m so grateful that there are brave badass people out there who are strong enough not just physically but mentally and emotionally to help and rescue them. I couldn’t but I thank God for the people who do!!
@@Gunnar2V you should buy meat from local farms and not from supermarkets that sell meat from industrial farms. You dont need to be vegan to speak against animal abuse! I also sugest to not eat seafood, it has a lot of bycatch (animals that arent targeted but still get caught) like sea turtles, dolphins, sharks, whales and sea birds.
@@julialungan4722 yes I do! I’m happy to say that:)
Your words are true. How’re you doing
It just breaks my heart to see mistreated animals 🥺
Sophia is so beautiful. I'm glad she got rescued. I have rescue parakeets and its so hard when you don't have age or good information on them. Love is all my babies want and thats terrible that she had horrible diet. My babies get their greens, celery, carrots and broccoli and special occasions millet.
good job ! most people don't even bother to check what their birds should eat ...truly sad
@@pixazelz Thank you they're my babies. They get Kaylor if Colorado seed mixed with Roudybush pellets or Zupreem fruit pellets and sometimes get some Tropimix and can't remember the other one.
Captions say it's Dr. K. That's Dr. Swann. I met him in person on several visits, very nice person and a great vet. So sad that he left the clinic.
Really why ;(
Awww.. she's all nice and trimmed now 💖

Aww she’s such a sweet bird. That lady is wonderful, as are Dr K’s staff
aw she's such a sweetheart
also I had no idea you could just grab them like a rubber chicken like that
Good show! Way to go! You're also a good soul, Doc!

We're so glad you enjoyed it, Pam. Thanks for watching!
She is so precious. I dont feel birds should be kept as pets. But Im glad this beautiful animal is in the care of such loving people.
Such a beautiful bird, I cried when they talked about her being mistreated
Love that eyeliner on the lady who is caring for the macaw!
So sweet. Ashley was a rockstar. You can tell how much she cares. Whew that got me all teary eyed! So glad she had a great rescuer and isbon track to a better life.
She is a super good handler for Macaw. Nice and gentle too.
She’s beautiful!
That Macaw was chill ❤️❤️❤️
You guys are AWWWW-SOME...❤ I love her caretaker, she is obviously in good hands.

Sophia’s new owner has a great heart. Love her
They handled her so well. And she was a total sweetheart! She could have bit their fingers off but she didn't.
I love she is holding the bird like a baby ❤️
I have a macaw and he loves to give hugs and kisses enjoy her
I had one of these guys grab my finger once... wouldn't let go either. Wasn't pleasant to say the least, they are quite strong as you can tell. Beautiful bird
Oof sounds painful, but yes! Very strong!

I love Dr K’s show. To me it doesn’t matter how brilliant you are or that you are a genius none of that matter. Dr K has all of that great . What I see as a the number 1 quality , she has that makes her so great is SHE has heart ❤️ ❤. Every animal is special to her, that is what makes her so great.
what a sweet Macaw. how anyone miss treat a sweet girl like that. she has a new owner that will cause her harm. and she will be loved forever. Macaw's are beautiful bird's.
Look at that sweet baby blushing at the end awwww
Ashley is a super technician!
hi
That is such a good-natured bird. I'm surprised she's that nice considering how badly her prior owner neglected her. I guess the neglect was ignorance rather than physical abuse.
I hope they let the wings re-grow. And what a sweet macaw!! Had to get my cockatiel loose when she got herself stuck and she wasn't as nice as this macaw while I have her and her boyfriend for a year now. She tore my finger apart but rather that than her getting hurt.
That was the most amazing handling what a gift she has🥰
SHEIS GORGEOUS YOUR AN AWESOME DR, THANK YOU LOVE DRK
She’s beautiful,so is Sophia.
Every so often, I like coming to these series and watching it again
“Made friends with her instantly”” lol after strangling it for 5 seconds 😅😅😅😅😂
great vet and such a great vet nurse. she was so into her patient - and a great personality. i loved watching her “flying” the bird. :) 👩🏾⚕️🦜🌷🌱
i am learning so much about the emotions of birds and totally amazed. their emotional feelings are so sensitive. just look at her laying her head on her new mom. i swear i see an expression in those eyes. she knows she’s safe. :) beautiful vid - thanks :) 🦜🌷🌱
I just love this beautiful bird
Exceptionally great people here. Shine on!
0:58 the international duck exclusive sound macaws make at the vet. 😂 every macaw owner knows. I thought it was just my child that made that sound
Parrots really do appreciate good manners.
So pretty and so sweet!

Qué hermoso ANIMALITO. Gracias qué lo rescataron de dónde seguramente no lo cuidaban, ni le daban cariño. 😘😘❤️❤️🙏🙏😁😁🌸🌸
Great story! Beautiful bird! I WISH people would stop focusing on the bad past an animal has had. It keeps that energy om them:)
She keeps choking the macaw!

I want her!

Yes so cute. How’re you doing
Such a cutie pie.. 😍🤗😘

I am crazy about parrots... I can afford a big bird like her.. but I have 2 year old Alexander parrot.. and he is just amazing we stay together.. I never let him feel scared or terrified.. the best is when he feel safe and secure.. parrot attempt to give u his half digested food.. by throwing up..😂😂 I mean I can't eat that.. but I'm happy that he trusts me❤️❤️❤️
Wow she seems like a lovely bird (who would ever get rid of her) .very well behaved. Looks great considering the peanut diet...my Greenwing distains peanuts 🤣 she Chuck's them out& only eats the expensive nuts cashews, hazelnuts, pecans, almond . & Makes waaay more noise at the vet (& she's a good patient)
Thank you 🙏💋❤️👎🏼🌵🇺🇸
Preciosa y amorosa ave

So Cute
A recently rescued macaw is brought to Dr. K's Animal ER for her first check-up.
Wish they hadn't clipped her wings, its very distressing to birds and sad but it might have been situationally for the better
Sometimes with a new bird, it's a necessity. The bird seems very stressed out since it's in a new environment and was abused for so long. So trimming her until she gets used to her environment is usually recommended.
I almost never trim my birds feathers unless they have an underlying health problem and I need them to sit still. So it pains me when I have to do it.
Its horrible indeed.. instead of going to flight training with her they just cut them off.. horrible.
That's a 'progressive clip' so they'll come back in a few months and she does still have the ability to fly considering she still has all her secondary and most of her primaries. It's not ideal but it's nothing like a traditional hack job that maims them for years.
If your reading this I hop your having a great day
A recently rescued macaw is brought to Dr. K's Animal ER for her first check-up.
Thank you! You too!
This doctor was such a good one.Macaw was treated very well.I have a question to make. What kind of nuts are suitable for parrots?I have a grey one and he likes peanuts.Thank you.👍
Pine nuts, almonds, walnuts, macadamia nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts,, pecans, pistachios. These are fed as treats or broken into small bites for training purposes. They are considered high value rewards for good behavior. I give my Macaw 1 walnut or 1 almond in the shell daily for beak exercise by cracking them open. The almond shell she uses to grind her beak and keep it trimmed herself.
No peanuts. They aren't even tree nuts they are legumes grown I the soil and can carry asperligosis. A fungus they can get from mold spores in peanuts. It can make your bird very, very sick.
1) Is it certain this bird is female? 2) "Her" honking & sudden switch to gentleness, to "baby-like" behavior (ie, the "honks") are a reversion to literally chick behavior. Sometimes they do this if frightened, or w/trauma, surprise, etc (tho I do think the vets were quite patient & gentle. It's more the suddenness, the introduction of something this bird was not used to, or that was totally new to this bird. I don't believe it's any harmful or lasting trauma.)
My statements are based upon observations of breeding & keeping macaws & parrots for many years (breeding macaws 15 years, keeping them a total of 30 years; misc parrots breeding & keeping 38 yrs).
Concerns about being fed solely on peanuts are the possibility of fungal infections, due to aflatoxins, aspergillosis, vitamin & nutrient deficiencies, & I believe kidney function.
Good luck for the teenager phase. There are good training videos from BirdTricks. You'll need that for when hormones turn your sweet baby into a biting monster ( the period at which alot of owners sell their macaw or put it in a shelter. Nobody likes getting stitches because sweet angel had another mood swing. ).
