Colombia's Hidden Killers: Part 1/2 (Documentary)

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, was founded five decades ago as a Marxist people's army fighting against capitalist imperialism and Colombia's often-brutal government. And they've been fighting a protracted bloody war ever since. In recent years, FARC has devolved into a guerrilla force that threatens the very people it originally sought to protect. Why? Because in order to secure their dwindling territory and lucrative coca fields, FARC has buried thousands of land mines in civilian areas. Since 1990, there have been over 10,000 land mine victims in Colombia, the second-most in the world behind Afghanistan.
FARC and the government have been negotiating peace for the past six months, and FARC's potential demobilization could yield a transformative moment in Colombian history. But the scars of 50 years of conflict, and 50 years of land mines, can't be so easily erased. We traveled to Colombia to speak with land mine victims and to see first hand how around 7,000 FARC guerilla have held off over 300,000 Colombian soldiers for so many years.

Little girl went through all that and still the most adorable smile, hope she’s okay years later
When I saw her mother cry I started crying too. Her daughter is really sweet. I just hope that one day there will be peace in Colombia.
God bless her
Hopefully she's alright, but you really can't talk about what the guerilla did to you if you're still living in those territories ://
Juan Piedrahita Yeah, they can even cut your tongue
Juan Piedrahita they are so poor where are they gona go it’s not easy to move with no money and no place to go
There are 2 different Colombias. There's one with high FARC and ELN presence, and the other one that is safe. I have been here for over a year and never, not once, felt threatened. It's a beautiful country and I'm glad to live here. But as I work and live my life here, every day there are clashes between the army and the guerillas. The thing is, you'll never be affected as long as you don't venture into that territory. And one more thing. Before you make a joke about Colombia being a cocaine factory, think of who buys all that cocaine.
Colombia isn't even thw world's largest cocaine producer anymore anyways. It's now one of the most prosperous countries in South America now anyways.
Don't you mean FART & ELLIOT?
I went to Medellin November 2018 two weeks later I bought another ticket to go back April of 2019 I love Colombia

been there, Santa Marta is amazing and Colombia is one of the most beautiful countries I've ever visited. Colombians are warm and welcoming people, not a single trouble in 2 months there. god bless Colombia and it's people, bacano!!!
Oh yes it's such a peaceful country!
For those who come to see this documentary, this day (23-06-2016) Peace Agreement was signed, this agreement was raised and developed for 4 long years. In this agreement were to agree on 6 points to achieve peace, a comprehensive agrarian reform, participation in politics, drug trafficking and illegal crops, Victims, End of Conflict and verification and non-repetition of the conflict. Colombia has suffered for 50 years, but in Colombia believe and know that peace is development. Colombia has changed dramatically over the past years, Colombia is now an example for Latin America. If you have some question about it, ask me, I will try to answer you. (Sorry if my english is hard to understand)
grasias pana 👌
do you think the peace will hold? Best of luck to you and your countryman from Germany
What demands of the FARC were not met, and what demands of the government were not met? Do both side feel satisfied with the agreement? And has violence sparked off since then?
I hope it stays, but I'm unsure, seems like both sides are unhappy, you know what they say, a bad peace can be worst than a good war.
It's a grim thought but it could just brew resentment on both sides until it boils over again.

Wow these guys from Vice have balls of steel. Going to those hot spots is REALLY dangerous, and hearing the last sentence where a soldier activated a landmine feet from where they were, really gives you the chills. Kudos Vice for making these videos for us to see.
When VICE makes this stuff, I watch it. This is the VICE I know...brave, edgy, willing to take chances to get first-hand accounts from people.
Keep making videos like this and putting them on CZcams and I will keep giving you views.
If you agree with this, please thumbs up.
well you'd hate VICE now, its mostly trash now unfortunately
Yeah I miss the old vice.
How far vice has fallen…
"Landmines can be found all over Colombia"
What a broad statement...
Actually, only about 3 percent of Colombia's land is being controlled by FARC and they're always generalizing this issue to a national level when in fact it's only a very small section of Colombia.
It only takes weeks to get that advance ur territory
They want to entertain. Vice dont inform.people.. Amd Im Colombian.btw...
@@prestonblackburn2464 have you seen what Uribe did? He managed to encircle them to the point they had to fill their gained territory with landmines

Since when has the Colombian government given a fuck about the indigenous populations? If the FARC were disbanded today, I honestly doubt there would be any military effort to disarm the land mines.
What? no no, Do you think actually ANYBODY even my government would be in peace with themselves and relaxed about having mines on their own land? There is a big part of the army dedicated to do so, they are experts on it, even if they were not interested, there is more than one company that is as well specialized on disarming them. My grandfather was the governor in the caqueta colombia. He was kidnapped 5 times by the guerrillas just because our family had wealth throughout farming. Sadly on his last kidnap while he was active governor he was brutally killed by the guerrillas. Life is not easy as we expect in colombia. I went to the jungles of Putumayo and the forests of Saravena in Arauca. I've spoken with Colombian soldiers as they sorted cocaine and smoked marijuana. And I also spoke with FARC rebels. Of course, I wasn't kidnapped by either side, contrary to the speculation that the FARC 'are indiscriminate mass murderers who love and thrive on killing Westerners'.
Let me tell you; although Colombia needs peace, this video is so one-sided that it should be viewed with serious suspicion. It's sensationalist, and pretends to want to help Colombia but actually hurts the Colombian people by selecting the facts and ignoring others. Vice should be ashamed of themselves.
Well, if I really cared whether you believe me, I would prove it to you via photos and video evidence, along with firsthand witnesses and stories that couldn't possibly be lied about without you noticing. But I don't care.

I love vice so much. they provide a service for all you tubers.
The thing with VICE is that they always TEND to show the bad things of situations, but it is understandable because that is what people are looking for, impacting news. I don't like the focus too much on the bad side, but I like the fact that this is being shown to people around the globe from an international perspective. It is also very good, the fact that they are using PROVEN statistics, I am Colombian, and like it or not, this is our story, something we have to fix for future generations...Thx VICE for showing interest in the conflict.
They show the worat placea of colombian cities to cause polemic... I hate that, makes my country look more undeveloped than it is...
@@pangeaplay8938 Yeah that’s the problem.

viejo Gabriel... a mi tambien me emputa eso de VICE, estos cabrones solo veneden lo malo... nunca lo bueno.
If I'm not mistaken, the title of the piece is "Colombia's Hidden Killers", not "Colombia's Flower Shops and Candy Cane Stores", or was I mistaken on that?
Well, since I wasn't, then it only serves that they'd show one of the many dark sides, because that dark side is there and is affecting real people, and most of the world never hears about this stuff on any news source.
So why wouldn't VICE highlight this dark side, especially when VICE is and always have been a source of obscure and controversial information. Do you even know how VICE got it's start?
Perhaps you should just turn your face back to the TV, you seem to want sugar and puppy kisses all day long, you're not mature enough for the realities of the world, outside of touched-up & perfected tourist destination photos & videos.

Gracias.

Hey vice, why is it that every time I hear the word Colombia from you, it's always something negative??? Your "journalism" is sorry. There's so much positivity to feature yet every time I see Colombia it's something awful. Is it all for likes and views? I'm thinking of going to south america one day, and Colombia is one of the places i'm most eager to see. I've been told by MANY people that i should never go there, if i did i would be at serious danger, but some other people say you just don't go to red zones and take normal precautions like you would in any other city like London, and say Colombia is a very nice place.
Is Colombia a safe place to go?
Nobody can talk you out of it but yourself; my advice: if you feel like you are going to get kidnapped then don't come because you probably won't enjoy your trip.
By all means, go!! The media has unfortunately made Colombia seem as if as soon as you would get off the plane, you're going to get kidnapped or mugged and so on...but in reality, like the other person mentioned, as long as you stay away from the dangerous areas you should be fine. Colombia is a beautiful country with much to offer to tourists. You will never regret going.
