  • I want to thank everyone for sticking around over the last year when things were silent on my end. It means a lot that over the last year there was never a moment where the comments making sure I was doing alright went away. I appreciate all of your love and support and am very excited to continue making content. There are things cooking kids. Very excited to share sooonnnn! Not anything crazy just a video lol

Everyone in that chat (including me) experiences serious chronic disabilities and has gone through traumatic experiences with cancer in their immediate families. Same here. I knew the community was getting whack when a few years back I messaged a (relatively popular) booktuber on Tumblr after she directly contradicted herself on something she'd said in one of her last videos (and was being really condescending towards those that didn't hold the same opinion). I wasn't aggressive or mean or trying to have a "gotcha!" moment. I was just genuinely curious how she felt about it/if her opinions had changed. But she came back at me VERY defensively and started making random accusations about me.
I can understand being defensive--no one likes being called out--but the accusations were literally so weird because she was assuming shit about me from one short comment. She said I was a teenager (I was not, I am the same age as her) and I wasn't educated (I am) and that I need to stop making reading fiction my personality (ironic coming from her). And I wasn't about to continuing arguing with her because I was just so dumbfounded by this response, so I unsubbed/unfollowed and left it at that. A few months later I saw her in one of ReadWithCindy's (who I love) videos where she was talking about booktubers who were shitty to her (this booktuber's pic is somewhat blurred in the video but I immediately knew it was her) and I was like yep, that checks out.
I'm all for trying to be PC and considerate and "woke," there are certainly merits to sensitivity. But I just find it ridiculous that a lot of these booktubers who attack creators like Caleb and Cindy perpetuate the exact bullshit they try to call out. In their attempts to be the MOST PC and MOST considerate and the MOST woke, they just conjure up problems where there are none. It has become an incredibly self-righteous community, and I honestly think they're just going to end up eating themselves.

I think behavior can be psycho if it is perpetuated by psychopaths such as the book Twitter community. If gaslighting a teen to one's ideological conditionings isn't psycho, I don't know what is. I am 36 and I am good friends with mental illness and I wouldn't dream of placing such abuse upon a young person. It is straight up emotional abuse and those "adults" should be ashamed and seek therapy. If the word fits the behavior, I don't see how it is ablelist.

As a disabled person who is also a cancer survivor, I appreciated your video. I understood and agreed with what you were saying. Tfios was the only one close to my heart cause I had the same cancer and leg amputation as Augustus. I’ve never had a character as close to what happened to me and will forever be grateful for that, which I told John Green in person. That being said I was able to only watch the movie once. Apart from that book I can’t really watch/read any books similar to that cause it DOES seem like they’re romanticizing illness or someone needs to die in order for the love interest could appreciate life etc.
And I get it tfios was very successful and some authors/directors were looking for the same success. I don’t think this type of movies are going away soon but that shouldn’t mean we can’t criticize the content cause it involves sick/disabled characters. I mean people are entitled to have their opinion, but it’s just weird seeing abled people being offended when there wasn’t anything bad in the video. It seems to me they just want to act offended to look woke but hey I could be wrong. I mean thanks booktube for defending us, but there’s no need to be outraged or cancel Caleb. Caleb just brought light to this topic which can be worth having a conversation. There are so many things we can discuss from these movies only hiring body abled actors to these movies romanticizing diseases. Y’all only get a glimpse of how it really is normally in the third act of the movie/book. And to be frank, I like caleb’s dark sense of humor but that’s just me.
We could be an awesome community if we weren’t so focused on canceling people for critiquing your faves or act like gatekeepers. We also don’t need to jump on the wagon canceling someone for critiquing characters unless you want that those likes on Twitter or views on yt which many do but would never admit it.

For those kids who are out of line and saying really hurtful things - we should help them realize the issue so they can improve on that. But to attack and bully, people like that need to check themselves and log off, like you said. - So I agree with you - people do too much to not even help a situation and make it worse.

The internet has gotten a lot worse in that regard and we do need to try to protect minors from being pulled into potentially dangerous subcultures who often use this ""edgyness"" as a initiator for recruitment.
What I meant was people who have become so overly obsessive about bombarding anyone who isn't absolutely perfect with criticism and hate to serve some kind of superiority complex, or by some misunderstanding of "wokeness". So, as someone who has chronic health issues, and saw your video. Yeah, it's got some ableist moments, but compared to the movies discussed, it's not worth talking about. Something those virtue-signalling able-bodied people don't get is that ableism is in every part of society, and it's hard to make content that doesn't ever accidentally have at least some ableism occur in it. But the only real way to fight that smaller stuff is to deconstruct the larger ableist narratives that suffuse our culture, such as those movies which romanticize cancer and chronic illness. Like, if those creators want to actually address ableism, calling out a CZcams channel with less than a million subscribers is nothing compared to actually criticizing blockbuster films that gross millions of dollars. (Although tbf, there are bigger fish to fry in terms of ableism, but the romanticization of illness is often one that goes unnoticed.) Overall, you have nothing to apologize for. Those movies are shit, and by not honestly depicting life with serious health problems, make the lives of people who have them much more difficult

It is absolutely not wrong to come back for money. Food service is physically demanding and mentally exhausting. It saps you of the energy you'd put towards creative pursuits long after you clock out.
While I was working a to go counter I woke up multiple times thinking I had messed up someone's order and would be sitting in bed panicking about how to fix it (I have a hard time explaining the space my brain was in because I knew I was at home but thought I was still at work at the same time somehow, like I needed to pick up the phone and call a customer back from bed)

Look I don't think we need to have a PhD for EVERY open dialogue we're going to have and these books, and movies, characters are not more important than ACTUAL people. The fact that people were up in arms more about your honesty commentary than the original subject matter is wild. And I bet you everyone of those people are into a murder comedy podcast. We can mock and commentate on something without it being a direct comparison to ACTUAL PEOPLE.

What’s interesting is booktube/booktwt are…readers. These people have most likely encountered contextual clues, metaphors, and sarcasm in literature. Hell, you can even come across them in movies.
The inability to parse the true intent of Caleb’s video is very possibly a willful one.

It’s 100% purposeful. That’s why they were all criticizing him for saying stupid, and psycho when they say it themselves. It’s a classic situation of disliking someone first, coming up with a reason to dislike them later. They already didn’t like him, for whatever reason. And when they saw that he was doing something that they could frame as offensive, giving them a “valid” reason to talk about disliking him they jumped on it.

Contrapoints has a great video on cancellation and her breakdown of it is exactly what happened to you. The jump from "What you did is maybe not great" to "What you did was literally the worst thing anyone has ever done" to the final jump to "You are the worst person ever" might as well be a pipeline with how efficient it works. I'm sorry you went through that but excited to see you back!

I’ve had cancer twice. And I loved that video. It finally wasn’t just a sympathy fest. I hated getting sympathy and being treated like a fragile object by other people.
But most importantly it romanticized and profited off of being sick and dying young. Which to me is gross.
Edited to add: That I’ve legitimately had people tell me I shouldn’t have been born because of my other health conditions. And I never felt that feeling from your video.

Don't apologize for your tone or sarcasm. People who got angry at your dry humor just can't take a joke, and that's their problem, not yours.
