- **THE AVON ROACH PROJECT**
How many people does it take to make a difference and bring a species back from the brink? In this case, just two men with a deep love for the Hampshire Avon. Many will have heard of the Avon Roach Project already, but we can't sing their praises enough.
Trev and Budgie, take a bow!

This is who should be getting MBEs. Amazing work by all involved
Already on that matey! 😉👌
Too busy giving them out to Rugby players and Toff politicians! These two would definitely deserve it over people like that. They are making a real difference to a once great river and for many people who fish it.
Sorry I’ve just posted the same. Your so so right
Yep dam right.. meanwhile some materialistic stupid celebrity claiming mental health problems despite being filthy rich will properly get one for complete nonsense. ...
These guys are legends. All of us members of Christchuch and Ringwood angling clubs are so grateful!!
These are the people that deserve awards like OBE MBE and the lottery fund should be backing these amazing people absolutely fantastic project thank you ALIEN
On it! 👌👍
There must have been many times when these two faced setbacks and indifference that could have ended this project. Thank you for battling to save this magnificent fish from that iconic river.
In my opinion it's gentleman like yourselves that are the heroes of this country and in my opinion you both deserve an OBE thanks
Why on earth would people dislike this video? These guys have done a fantastic job.
There is a faction of idiots who dislike anything fishing related. Same case with any other subject really.
Excellent work by these two men, i must say i have been disappointed by the so called 'big name anglers' who have stood by and complained about the state of our rivers and lakes whether due to otters/cormorants or whatever else but it takes two ordinary gentlemen to put in the time and improve things for years to come.....massive respect to you both 👏👏👏
Well done lads you should be proud of yourselves.
Outstanding work gents. It is now a pleasure fishing the Avon again and bags of roach are now common place thanks to the both of you. Never thought I’d see the day. Still waiting for that elusive 3lb’er but at least now it is a reality and not a dream. Thank you 👏👏
Iv followed the project for years its been a real labour of love.Ikoow they have got some credit through the years but in my view not nearly enough the lads have restocked Hampshire Avon with its own strain.
RIP Budgie. Miss you buddy.
Amazes me that we have all the ecological and conservation agencies....and they have presided over habitat destruction and masses of cormorants, a sea bird, moving inland.
Huge,huge respect for you guys.
Thats so cool. I often thought i would have to stop fishing if im in a wheelchair, but this guy shows that you can even reintroduce the roach to avon whilst in a wheelchair. Much respect to you guys!
Absolutely brilliant, just shows you what you can achieve with vision , hard work and passion
I don't have the words to say what a fantastic story this is and how wonderful it is what these two gentlemen have done!
Wow. Me and my Dad spent many a hard and happy time at those stews when we used to use them for bringing on trout for the streams on Bickton. Brings back fond memories seeing those stews again. Well done guys. Great work.
Heroes A person,or people who are admired or idealized for courage outstanding achievements or noble qualities.Thank you.x
Such a brilliant story. Who doesn’t love a roach and the Hampshire Avon has always been a special river.
Incredible, commendable work by all. I love this.
What a fantastic achievement, it restores the faith, hats off to you Guys
Absolutely brilliant ❤️👌😊👍
Simply Inspirational....
John will be looking down with that great big smile on his face 👍🏼
Brilliant story!
What worries me though, is when the restocking stops. The cormorants unless culled will reduce the numbers yet again!
There‘s only one option Richard. Kill the black nature-destroyer birds, otherwise we will never can calm down and rest …..and enjoy this beautiful nature
John Wilson would be very proud of these legends
Nice to meet you yesterday Trevor, keep up the good work!
It's amazing what anglers can do and achieve.
Respect to you two🙏
Absolutely amazing! This is such an inspiration and should be used as an example for all UK fish projects. Big well done!
Lovely story this very inspiring long live the roach hats off to all involved 👍
Beautiful story, well done for bothering lads... amazing!!
Thank you both for giving us all hope again!
Well done chaps
How important it is to have individuals like this who took it upon themselves to try and make a difference. Thank you gents!
Just brilliant guys! thank you so much for all your hard work and dedication .
That's an impressive effort to restore such a beautiful fish back into the river. I had a roach last night, was the only one In a bag of 100lb+ of bream. It's true how you always look at it a little longer before you let it swim away! Feel the urge to pick up the centrepin now and go trotting 🎣
A dream come true, Pleased you have for filled your dreams but also same you say it’s coming to a end, We could do with the same happening on the Severn at stourport? IMHO. Thanks you and all that have been involved 👍🍻
Amazing work thankyou so much your time and efforts should definitely be rewarded lets hope the environment agency pick up and carry on with this truly amazing work Thankyou
Amazing work guys!! So good to see all the hard work put in is paying off. Can’t wait to get back down there again to my home town for the roach. Well done 🤘🤘
Wow I needed this video today. Such inspiring guys who have not only done great things for the humble Roach but in turn have lifted the spirits of many people.
Such an amazing river and the 2 guys are true heroes! Great video
Brilliant job guys!! Great to see all the hard work paying off! Well Done!
The river Colne needs a project like this
What a great story....well done all involved, and the land owners for helping out 👍
Roach are by a country mile my favourite fish so good looking and a great school fish amazing to catch a large one or fab to get a good net of them
much love to you...brings cheer to my soul in a world of nonsense talk....and i love roach....much love
Such a lovely story, what troopers you both are!
Absolutely fantastic.I had no idea regarding the decline just memories of halcyon days in the 50's fishing the Hampshire Avon with my grandfather for big roach on Bisterne Estate and Ibsley. Later I fished for Avon Roach with my old mate Dave Swallow who lived for a while almost on Ibsley Bridge.I still have my Dave Swallow feeder apron and a couple of his pin reels. An outstanding project by any standards.
Someone needs to start this up for Thames barbel up oxford way! Shadow of its former self!!! Not that the EA would ever say!
What a great video! Anglers do care about there sport and these fellas have gone above and beyond to look after a species most anglers will overlook now days, great work!
Beautifully presented lovely looking river thanks for posting the video I’m a fly angler but sometimes enjoy just fishing the float for roach 👍👍👍
Incredible passion, dedication and determination. Humbled.
Well done lads, I’ve never fished the Hampshire Avon. I am mostly a Carp angler, but to see what you lads have achieved, in bringing back the Roach stocks, is really quite inspiring.
Amazing work. Legends🙌🏻🙌🏻👏🏻👏🏻
respect , and hats off to you ,amazing work.
What a great effort and what a wonderful story. A lovely touch using John Searl picture at the beginning. Credit to all involved.
Absolutely brilliant the thought that one day my son and me will be on the Avon and have chance of catching a tremendous 3lb Roach thank you Trev and Budgie 😍
Brilliant. You have my support 101%
Well done lads.....brilliant.
Magnificent!
Amazing work.
One word. Extraordinary!
Amazing fellas. Roach Gods. I salute you.
Remarkable 👏🏼
Great work fellas. Respect.
I remember way back hearing about this in the early years, and living in ireland I never kept up to date with it. But great to see the success these two men have achieved. Qudos to them.
We have the opposite problem here in ireland. We find it hard to find any true rudd lakes nowadays as roach were only introduced to ireland in the late 1800s and have now reached nearly every lake and river in the country and displaced the rudd. However I still look on in awe when I rarely catch a large roach. Fine fish.
Hi Ben you keeping ok long time since iv heard anything about what your up to iv come of facebook, lasr time you where after big Tench around where you had moved to down the sticks and you little girl wanted a pony ,thats a few years now.Funny not two long ago this year as it happens i came across some of your first tweets they where regarding your fishing exploits with your Dad bless him is it five years this month anyway used to do a lot with big Dan down on Mask but havent been in touch with him for 3 years, have to get it together ans sort a session before pike season is over.Take care Ben and keep the chin up tight lines.
Amazing work ❤
Legends, thank you for saving the roach it is probably the one fish every freshwater angler has caught at one time or another and could be said the fish that starts our love of angling.
amazing work, mega.
Good work!!!!
Very inspiring men the lot of them.
Well done to your both 🎣🐟🐟🎣
Fantastic work others rivers could benefit from the same such as the wensum in norfolk. Some label angling and anglers cruel but forget many are conservationly minded and care deeply about the waters they fish.
Well done. Lovely video.
These are the sort of people that should receive an OBE. Avon angling clubs should be putting nomination letters in from all there members
Thank you.
u r a v gd man matey loads moan your DOING well done again
First fish I ever caught on a telescopic whip 18 years ago when I went with my Grandad and thats what got me hooked on fishing. I Never mind catching a roach no matter what I am fishing for
First fish I ever caught was in 1967 on the canal at Kilby Bridge outside Leicester. Yep, it was a roach & I've loved them ever since.
Legends
Those guys are heroes. But this film made me angry for one reason: WTF was EA doing all this time with our license fees???
Thx for feeding my pike 🙏they love the roach 🤔
FYI there is nothing that pike loves more than another pike...
These guys deserve an MBE absolute legends
Well done Trevor and Budgie, but don’t forget Mike Trowbridge who started it all off in the late 70’s.
RESPECT
These are the people that deserve knighthoods. Not pop stars and tv personalities. Arise sirs. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Wish someone would do something with the river wear down fatfield Washington it's shameful Durham gets stocked with course fish .We need someone to help us get it stocked but no one has ever listened.
Let nature do its job
Amazing and what do we pay our EA licenses for???? boom
But will otter mink and cormorants be controlled so rivers stand a chance the EA will never get there license money off me again
Portcullis yeh mink and cormorants can be culled but there’s no one doing it there happy too take your money for a license but never willing too improve anything
Portcullis I agree mate I have mink traps on parts of the Severn and small streams and rivers around them I do catch a few but I don’t touch gooseanders and cormorants or otters by going too jail over that but it does annoy me that the EA do very little about fish sticks etc like where’s the money going
Medicated Flowers :?Are you still seeing Goosands on the middle Severn. 😱
Dave P sure am mate and In numbers too
