    Just think about the ridicule Ned faced. The scrutiny from his wife, the scrutiny from other lords. He was known to be the most noble and honorable and he took a knock on that because his sister had fallen in love and had a child with an enemy of his. And he kept a promise to his sister to raise that child in secret. Ned was the best character in that world and he raised his true heir in Jon. The true heir.
    Also damn Rhaegar being all obsessed with profecies and shit.

    • @astrinymris9953
      @astrinymris9953 Před 5 lety +83

      I'm not sure that a man takes such a knock to his reputation for siring bastards. Catelyn takes it in stride when she hears gossip that Ned sired a bastard. He was separated from her, men have needs, etc. What threw her for a loop was that Ned brought Jon to Winterfell to be raised beside his trueborn children, rather than "providing for" him by giving the mother some coin or income-generating property.
      Now, for a young noblewoman, an out-of-wedlock pregnancy is a lot more scandalous. That's why Hoster Tully gave Lysa tansy tea and married her off to an heirless older man who valued proof of fertility over virginity.

    • @dzidziolus
      @dzidziolus Před 7 lety +457

      It was an arranged marriage between Rhaegar and Elia and we all know that love is not something you can force upon someone. I don't blame Rhaegar for not loving Elia, just like I don't blame Lyanna for not loving Robert. I would not want to be in an arranged marriage myself, so I'm not going to judge those characters.
      Elia and children had a good protection when Rhaegar left for the Trident, they were guarded by the walls of Red Keep and many guards. After Rhaegar's death they should have been sent to Dorne but the Mad King decided to keep them as hostages, so the Martells could not betray him. Some justice was done to them, when the man who ordered their deaths was killed (Tywin). Now we have to wait for the Mountain's death.

    • @mimirants7935
      @mimirants7935 Před 7 lety +288

      +dzidziolus Yes, and you don't blame him for humiliating her by behaving like a royal douche at the tourney. You don't blame him for thinking more about this newfound chick and fleeing with her than staying by his children at such a time. He was headstrong enough to flee with Lyanna and give a damn to the world...so why didn't he just do the same goddamn thing and refuse to marry Elia in the first place. I understand Lyanna was very young and gullible (not that I like her) and she didn't owe the family anything, but Rhaegar was a stunning specimen of a slimy silver hairball.

    • @mimirants7935
      @mimirants7935 Před 7 lety +64

      +Sritama Sen On re-reading my comment, he did ensure protection for the children and I suppose did what he could. But he's still a jerk. Far too obsessed with prophecies.

    • @dzidziolus
      @dzidziolus Před 7 lety +134

      Sritama Sen How can you be a good husband when you're forced to marry someone you don't love? He fulfilled his duty as a husband, conceived an heir and made sure his family was safe. You can't expect more from a person who was forced to that marriage. And Elia probably knew that her spouse didn't love her, because you just know when you're in a loveless marriage. So I don't think she was surprised when Rhaegar didn't crown her at the Tourney at Harrenhal.
      You ask why didn't he refuse to marry Elia. We don't know that and can only guess. Maybe he thought that with time he'll eventually fall in with her? Or maybe he didn't believe in love until he met Lyanna? We need to wait for the books to get the answers, because I don't think the show will focus on those questions with only 13 episodes left.

    • @Cleptrio
      @Cleptrio Před 3 lety +20

      David Anderson I think it also had something to do with what happened to Rhaegar’s other children. Ned was never ok with how brutally they were murdered, and he fought with Robert because he thought that the Mountain and the Lannister’s should’ve been punished for it before he ever knew Jon existed. While I definitely think his feelings about Jon influenced how he thought about Daenerys, I also think he just genuinely thought it was needlessly cruel to kill a girl on the other side of the world of the off chance that she might be a problem in the future.

      Robert Baratheon also thought the same as the children that the story was he kidnapped her and raped her. Also I don't think that is a more kid friendly story than Lyanna and Rhaegar had an affair and went off and eloped together.

      matt4787 It's not it was kid friendly, it's what justified the war, and personally what Robert Baratheon thought, it's this biased image of Rhaegar that Robert had that basically wrote how history went down, as they say history is written by the victors and Robert won.

      It was a response from the now edited orginal post in this thread. Which suggested that the parents told this story as a more kid-friendly approach to the Stark children which I was saying it was clearly still not a kid friendly story to tell. Point being many of the adults legitamately believed that Rhaegar kidnapped Lyanna and raped her.

    There’s such a sadness to Ned Stark in the books that the show with its limitations just couldn’t get across. In Ned’s chapters he’s haunted by the events of Robert’s Rebellion. He constantly hears Lyanna saying “Promise me, Ned.” He’s so melancholy. Every time he sees Jon mistreated, especially by Catelyn who’s much harsher to him in the books, you get this sense that Ned just wants to tell her the whole truth of it but is honor bound to keep the secret. Ned sees so much of his sister in Arya as well. He always thinks about Lyanna when he sees or talks to Arya. And the books have pointed out that Arya looks more like Jon Snow than her other siblings who all look more like the Tullys. But, because George is a genius, there’s more and more layers to Ned’s sadness. He feels out of place because a lord’s life was not meant for him but for his brother Brandon. He has major guilt that he’s the lord of Winterfell and is happily married to Catelyn because that’s the life Brandon was destined for. And then there’s the mystery surrounding his relationship with Lady Ashara Dayne, Ser Arthur Dayne’s sister and why she killed herself. You never see Ashara Dayne in Ned’s POVs. He doesn’t think about her at all. Not even once. Yet everybody else always puts him and her together. Everyone assumes she’s Jon’s mother. Did Ned love her? Did she kill herself because Ned told her that their love could not be? Ned doesn’t think about her but there’s something there. His thoughts are full of his promise to his sister. Even Brandon and his father barely come up. You feel like he repressed those memories. The show only gives you a fraction of this. Obviously we don’t have access to his thoughts in the show. But that’s always why the show falls short of the books.

      Very much true. But as somebody who has never read the books, i must say, Sean Bean does convey the emotions and weight in each of his words. He looks done with all of this and almost tired in a way. His melancholy and sadness is conveyed well enough for a viewer to get a semblance of what it would feel like to be ned

      What strikes me in the books is also that Ned doesnt think abt Rhaegar at all and when he does his thoughts are "he was too honorable to visit a brothel"
      Which makes me think Rhaegar did not kidnap and rape Lyanna.
      Although idk what the situation with Elia was, probably nothing good still.

    The scene with Stannis shows how much smarter he was than his brother Robert.
    Robert and Ned were best friends, they were basically brothers... And Robert simply accepted that Ned forgot his honor and fathered a bastard.
    Stannis knew that wasn't Ned's way. He knew there had to be more to the story. Ned and Stannis weren't best of buddies, but they were both men that prided themselves on their honor. As someone here said earlier, Robert and Ned may have been best friends, while Ned and Stannis weren't close at all, but Stannis seems to know Ned better than Robert did.

      That wry smile he made in response to Sansa bitterly saying Rhaegar raped her aunt was like he was saying, "You think he raped her, huh. Idk about that."

      He knew full well, he probably inferred it the moment he knew about Jon, though he and Catelyn supposedly hadn't spoken for years, (Yeah right, that woman was always a stone heart).
      Stannis was just as noble as Ned, and he knew about Roberts hatred for the Targaryens, so why voice his suspicions when his already furious brother could snap like a twig at the smallest thing.

    For everyone wondering why Ned didn't just tell Catelyn the truth, let's think about it for a second. Catelyn was engaged to Ned's brother, who she cared for (possibly even loved). But when he heard about his sister being taken he rushed to King's Landing to save her. Only to be horrifically murdered along with his father. In order to preserve the alliance with the Tully's Ned married Catelyn instead. And only spent one night with her before heading out to war. Catelyn was worried for months if her son (Robb) would ever know his father, so when WOULD be a good time to say that the child he brought back was the child of the two people who started a war, got her betrothed killed, and never told anyone the truth in an attempt to stop said war. It's not like Ned and Catelyn were that close before he left for war, so would it be easier to tell her all that? Or that it was a bastard the he had with some prostitute. She probably would have hated Jon more if she DID know the truth.

      Two scenes from the show I always point to are:
      1 - Eddard saying to Ser Barristan "No man here would ever question your honor"
      2 - Barristan responding to Dany asking if he knew her brother by saying Rhaegar was "The finest man I ever met"
      Goes against the idea that Rhaegar would kidnap and rape a woman

      About the Tower of Joy fight scene... I'm curious to know why Dayne continued to fight against Ned once there's two of them left. He was just there to rescue his sister. Dayne could've just stopped and told Ned the truth. But then KG have their vows. And Ned was on the usurper's side who just killed the prince so that probably explains why.But still... I'm curious. I just love Ser Arthur Dayne so much for he's such a badass and honorable character. THE Sword of the Morning. He shouldn't have died! It sucks. It sucks that those two other KG (Hightower and Whent) died that easily. They weren't appointed as KG for no reason. And for them to die that easily in a fight? Well, anything could happen in fights so that probably explains why... But still... ugh! Their deaths were just necessary for the story. Even Dayne's, Jon Snow's real daddy's best friend, death was necessary. Damn! :(

    Alot of people refuse to believe that they where together. Robert will forever be mad of the fact that Lyanna didn't love him, and the fact that Rheagor spent over a year away from his wife and, childern, why would he it leave the tower to meet Robert on the battle field. Because he knew that his family/blood life was on the line, and sure enough Robert order his whole family dead, including the bady boy he had with his wife. Jon would had been as good as dead, Rheagor, Lyanna, and Ned knew that. Rheagor could had kilt her at any point, left her and been done with the whole thing, but that was so far out his character, Robert was the only person to ever say anything bad about him and those who have never known him would believe anything they hear like Sansa. They loved each other, maybe gotten married and had a baby. She didn't act like a person who was raped and forced to have a baby she didn't want People!!!!!! 😩😥

      Something they show in the books and something I really really hope they show in the show, is a line that Lyanna says to Ned. And it refers to Robert. According to the books, Lyanna wasn't as thrilled about marrying Robert as Ned hoped. When he asks why, Lyanna says sadly,
      "Love is sweet, dearest Ned, but it cannot change a man's nature."
      Lyanna *knew* Robert wasn't going to be a good wife, and she definitely knew of Robert's reputation of sleeping around. She's young, and she's impetuous. While I suspect Rhaegar and Lyanna were a great love match (aka genuinely falling in love with each other), Rhaegar is also the quintessential prince of every noblewoman's dreams. I'm sure it was all too easy for Lyanna to fall for Rhaegar.
      I feel bad for Ned as well tbh. Having a friend that's an asshole is not easy. While I've never personally had to deal with such a struggle (thankfully, I hope I never do), I write a character in a collaborative story with a few friends. And in it, my character has a friend who is an absolute dick. It's a struggle. You want to help them out because they're your friend, but you still have to call them out on shitty things they do. But you don't want to lose their friendship.
      It's a lot more difficult than it appears to be.
      I'm gunning super hard for Bran to get more flashbacks about Rhaegar and Lyanna. The moment I find out if they're casting Rhaegar, I'm going to cheer.

      I'd say it's pretty damn likely that she was complicit in their running away, from what we know of Liana, Robert, and Rheagar. She did not want to marry Robert, who already had his first bastard or two by then.

    • @beckyweiss6072
      @beckyweiss6072 Před 8 lety +1

      Chris Lucas Agreed. I'm of the belief that Lyanna reciprocated Rhaegar's affections, but she wished things could have gone differently.
      I only theorize this because the Starks have a long history of being *very* close to their family. I can't imagine Lyanna willingly wanting to put her family through such trauma. Something else definitely had to have been going on to compel Lyanna to go off with Rhaegar without a word.

    Lyanna fled with Rhaegar because she was pregnant and knew that it would shame her family and potentially start a war so she was pregnant when they fled! And then when the armies showed up and she heard the news the stress sent her into early child labor... Jon was born premature and thus is the reason she had fatal complications during child birth ... He is the King who was promised the King of WESTEROS and Esson and he is a Starg warg connected to the magic of Bran the builder and the first men, the King in the North, rider of both Fire and Ice dragons!!! He is the Song of Ice and Fire!!!!

    You missed the first tomb visit, where Robert visits Lyanna's statue and talks about losing her, and then the conversation between Robert and Cersei where he talks about Lyanna being the only thing he ever wanted. I think they're kind of important because Robert's "love" of Lyanna was superficial and one-sided, and contributed to her eloping with Rhaegar. With the new revelations, this might be a good time to update the video anyway. :)

    I loved all of the tiny moments you don't understand until rewatch. As Robert says "What Rhaegar did to your sister.."
    You see Ned briefly look down in shame for lying by omission to Robert, His best friend and King. But it makes no sense until you realize Lyanna loved Rhaegar seasons later. Rhaegar didn’t mistreat Lyanna. Yet thousands died over a misunderstanding. By the time Robert decides to kill the last Targaryen (that he knows of), Ned can’t stand all the killing for a lie and he quits as hand of the King.
