- The fundamentals of DPSing are general concepts that transfer between expansions, raids, bosses, and even what class you're playing. No matter if you're playing a Death Knight, Demon Hunter, Druid, Hunter, Mage, Monk, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock, or Warrior having a really solid understanding and implementation of these are critical, and this includes every wow expansion, whether it's Vanilla WoW The Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm, Mists of Pandaria, Warlords of Draenor, Legion, Battle for Azeroth, Shadowlands, or even Dragonflight, wow is not that much different of a game between these settings for general so the information in this video still applies.

Nice - agree with most of it, asides the part on having background music.
There is a big interplay between these factors too, which makes attention #1. If you are distracted you will make mistakes in your rotation or misuse resources in suboptimal ways. Attention also factors into uptime and positioning. Great video like always.

a big part of getting good, and getting really good at parsing is understanding a whole fight, litterally everything. When a add spawns when to press buttons and when to save it for padding. take time and learn fights inside out. it will put you ahead off the curve.

Good video my man, some nice tips here. I'm more casual, so I'm not sure I tottaly agree with your sentiment there at the end, but will definetely keep your tips in mind.
Also why do you use evasion on every boss? Is it just incase you happen to pull aggro? I kinda only use it if I feel like that may happen.
theres some damage mitigation involved when using evasion and i think he's doing it not because he's ripping threat from tanks, but because it means its easier for healers to focus elsewhere if he knows he can take less damage during certain parts of fights. Less overall raid damage means higher chance of success of a kill. when 1 GCD can be the determining factor in keeping a character alive that can be used elsewhere then it matters
@@AdamPeeGuerra Well evasion only makes you dodge mellee attacks and makes ranged attacks less likely to hit you. I don't think there's many fights in ulduar where you get hit in mellee or by ranged attacks unless you pull aggro, which is why I am asking because I may be missing something, but it shouldn't really help your healers at all
So on a boss where you don't use vanish at all, I just throw it in whenever, sometimes if theres adds that just spawned like yogg0 p3 or just when the boss is dying because, why not, it's going to get reset when it dies anyway.
but it's main use is to save a vanish if something goes wrong, for instance on Algalon you open huge as combat, and after tricks runs out you could easily be 2nd threat, because the only other spec that matches your burst, UDK, still hasn't ramped up. If the tank dies then, you will immediately die or have to vanish because you are 2nd threat. But I need to save vanish for the big bang, so in the event that does happen (it never has) I can survive until the 2nd tank's reaction time taunt comes in, and we battle rez the first tank, and do the boss as normal and i still have my vanish.

What he means is be in the moment of the pull.For hunters and Rogues i always do this, get as close as possible md to tank and go ham.
I struggle the most with efficient targeting when theres multiple mobs or a boss with adds. Sometimes theres so much going on in a 25 man raid that i lose track of my target. Any tips?
A set focus macro that you can use on perhaps the boss or the like just so you have an easy time retargeting the higher prip target is first thing to come to mind
Theres a weakaura that shows what you are targetting over the nameplate, but if you are playing a multidot class you should use plater to make it easier, but depending on what boss there are usually weakauras specifically for those thing that you can grab like the kolo arms or the mimiron parts

Note about pulling the boss - do it at exactly the right time otherwise you're going to have an upset raid. Don't be that guy who pulls half a second early and messes up everyone else's pre-pot. And if you are going to go ham instantly - make sure you trust the tanks to actually hold aggro.
As a Hunter this isn't an issue for me - misdirect is a heck of an ability to allow immediate uptime and perfect pre-potting while going as hard as possible from the first global. And also as a Hunter giving advice to other Hunters who are maybe not super confident in their abilities - learn to drop traps effectively, don't rely on lazy macros for your pet, stutter step if you need to move, memorise boss hit boxes. Your DPS will shoot up, your pet is less likely to die and you won't be frustrated by unexpectedly being inside minimum range because the boss shuffled slightly.
On a personal level I also vocalise self-commentary with my guild post-fight. Admitting my mistakes, pointing out relatively minor issues, making suggestions for next time if its an unfavourable interaction with another player. Generally keeping it light and conversation worthy. Obviously we can't all do it since having 25 people all talking at once is awful - I just seem to be one of the few in my guild who communicates a lot. Just keep it outside of boss fights - let the raid leaders and tanks do most of the talking and only chip in when there's relevant information needing to be shared ((i.e. I confirm mid-fight MD requests, warn raid members who I see are in immediate danger due to tunnel vision, call out raid mechanics I'm personally dealing with to let people know its done. that sort of thing). At least during progression - when we're all relaxed and in farm mentality its common for various conversations to be going on that have nothing to do with WoW.
great example of this is precasting a soul fire as a lock, or a pyroblast as a mage, you precast a big spell, to frontload as much possible dps as you can - on any opportunity when the boss doesn't 'engage' on a timer (good examples in current classic content would be faction champs, twins, anub'arak - unfortunately beasts and jaraxxus both operate on activation timers.

Great video and interesting way of thinking. I agree on most of it and I’d wish more players (especially classic players) would watch your video. However, your view on dps players in the beginning of the video is a little tunnel visioned. Yes, players should focus on their own performance, but no that should not be their only point of focus.
Well when people constantly shit on your pizza and don’t let you come into activities with them because your pizza is shit, it KINDA makes it a “I wanna stop losing so much” situation.

Tip for good parses, refuse to do any mechanics. Let your team do it. Nature’s fury? Don’t move, let your raid move.
Maximize uptime even at the cost of your teammates.
Ideally you can still hit the boss, while you have the mechanic and both of you move a little. But if you absolutely have to lose uptime, you should take the L so that you can parse on another week.

The best way to not be distracted while playing is to stop using addons. If you need a weakaura to tell you to move away from a shadow crash you are playing the wrong game.

most of my parses back in the days were lucky +crit distribution, aoe phases for the class that excels at it and some help from the raid as DK tank buff that gave me +physical dps increase.
in today's state of the game, all 99+ parses are about not respecting game mechanics and being greedy. AOE phase? Let the guy you want to get 99+ do the aoe, let other players chill so that the guy has +extra hits against 10-12 targets.
As a feral cat i've been always tempted to top the charts against raw dps classes like warlocks / mages / rogues, but reality is that you'll be asked to: innervate, br, offtank if needed, or press tranquility. These are game mechanics often intended for the fight. Getting top DPS is about having so much team overgear that they can allow you to not care about void zones (if you can survive it through overgear / overheal). Something that's not mentioned but absolute must requirements is overall fight length. The more bloodlust / trinket procs contrubute to overall share of team fight, the better you are with your DPS remaining high. At some point you'll find yourself limited by the overall performance of the raid to get youself higher. If your raid performs 70-ish parses, being top geared mage won't get you to 99+ even if you follow all the tips in the video.
People forget to use utility snd that will never be shown by logs. For example warrior 20% bo us dmg with armor pen and 10% from disarm talent. Also maxed demo shout and thunder clap debuffs. Druid hurricane aoe debuff for bosses or aoe. Reaction adopting to what is going on right now is imports r
Not to mention if you get a warrior who lines up a shattering throw with heroism, bringing even more overall raid damage
I think a lot of people also think playing good = high parse. On the other hand consider something like a good ret, who spot heals, salvs, HoP, LoH, DSac/AM, etc brings tons of utility that might actually even hurt their DPS parse but is 100% higher value than just spending all GCDs being purely personal DPS focused
