Appreciate the brief overview; I've been thinking about making an alt (I'm new with Dragonflight and have been running pres evoker) but just didn't know which class to pick. Getting the broad strokes summary of each spec is way more helpful to narrow it down for me than going into the details.

Same here, stopped playing around the Lich king days, and returned just now. The biggest change I noticed is how fast it is to level up and I guess they got rid of different races having different starting areas.

Do you have to get the latest expansion or can you just buy Vanilla and play from there?
@@Kxiong276 I think with a subscription, you get every expansion up to Battle for Azeroth for free. If you wait til the new expansion (Dragonflight) comes out next month, I believe you also get Shadowlands (the current expansion) for free.
Though on the 15th of next month, we can skip leveling in the Shadowlands entirely, so I’d say it’s not worth waiting on Shadowlands to become free.
(And in my opinion, Shadowlands isn’t fun to level in anyway, so best to just skip that expansion entirely and try all the others!)

I started with classic first, playing a demonology warlock. When I tried retail, I realized it was so different and I didn’t enjoy it. This video is super helpful for me, and I’m leaning towards havoc DH or marksman hunter now.

Oh wow. A class selection guide video. I didn't know that was a thing. This video does do a good overview. Personally I like playing all the classes it is fun to have a variety. The only ones I didn't experience much yet is the demon hunter and the evoker. I recently figured something out. There are tiers based on how easy the class is. The easy tier is warrior, priest and paladin. These there are the most defensive classes. The mechanics are not too complicated either. Defense makes the gameplay a lot easier. If a character can absorb the damage of opponents, it gives a lot of leeway. The moderate tier is druid, shaman and monk. These are hybrid classes. There is some complexity in figuring out how to put together multiple roles. The hard tier is hunter and warlock. These are the pet classes. There is a ton of complexity with how to manage a variety of spells for the player character and manage spells for the pet too. It is even more complicated than hybrid class. In recent times, both pet classes have been classified as being damage specialists. However in practice both classes are very well rounded. The challenge tier is mages and rogues. These are the offensive specialists. They have simple mechanics, but don't let that fool you. They are the hardest classes hands down. Since they are so offensive, they have the weakness of having the worst defenses. They get killed off really quickly and easily. They rely on acrobatic evasive maneuvers just to stay alive. Everybody else can defend themselves by either soaking damage, using healing spells or using a bodyguard pet. The other methods are so much easier. One has to play really well to succeed as a mage and rogue. So those two are the hardest classes in the game.
I was wondering about what classes to do. Leveling is super fast these days. So I recommend trying all the classes. Whatever one likes best can pick that as a main. The process doesn't take very long. If one gets to level 10, they can get a good idea on how that class works. To sweeten the deal, this can all be done in the free trial. I am a veteran. However I start a new account. I have all classes leveled up to lv 20 except for hero classes. I also have an extra druid and shaman on the side. I am currently leveling an added dwarf hunter, but that is only to get the mounts. I will delete the guy, when I am done. I would also like to level some temporary characters just to play through starting areas. I prefer to play certain races. I like elves (night and blood), aliens (dranei), humans and furries (tauren, worgen and pandaren). Other races are just unappealing especially the Horde ones. It is still fun to quest in their starting area on a new character. Afterward I delete the character. After the trial period, I can then pay the subscription.
I think there may be a good class path for a new player. First a player should pick between warrior and priest. Both are defensive classes with simple mechanics. These are very beginner friendly. Both can get more offensive when they get the right spec. Warrior is good for those interested in physical fighters. Priest is good for those interested in magicians. Personally I prefer magician. Then the player can try more classes. After they try both beginning classes, they can play paladin. A paladin is an easy hybrid class that is a mix of both. Then there is a dual pathway. For physical fighter, one starts with warrior. Then they can play hunter, which is an intermediate one. Then they can play rogue, witch is the challenging one. For a magician, one starts with priest. Then they can play warlock, which is an intermediate one. Then they can play mage, which is the challenging one. Once one finishes both tracks, they can do the hybrids. I pick hybrids for last because they are so complicated. It is best to play all other classes first to understand the pieces that fit together. The best hybrid to start with is monk. It is very straightforward. It is like a rogue with some healing ability. The next hybrid to do is shaman. It is intermediate there are different elements with totems and buffs to keep track of. It is very challenging, but it can blend together pretty well. The final class to do is the druid. This is very complex as a hybrid. There are animal forms that full blown mimic other classes. It is really difficult how to fit them together. I would just recomend doing everything else before even touching the druid.
I was thinking of my favorite class. Back when I was a noob, my favorite class was paladin. It was mainly because it was the easiest class to play. A combination of heavy armor and healing magic makes this class very defensive. So this class is very forgiving for noob mistakes. Paladin mechanics are not too complicated. They used to have a ton of buffs. Now they are a lot simpler. I went to the damage spec, retribution, to be more well rounded. Then the paladin becomes really good at offense too. A paladin can be so good, that it can be scary. Maybe this goes to the head of the stereotypical paladin. Then they are confident enough to rush into dangerous encounters. Then as their battle cry, they shout "LEEROY JENKINS!!!!"
Now I am a veteran. Once I am experienced, class difficulty is less than an issue. I can still have some trouble with mage and rogue. I can power through them okay though. Now what is important is flavor and roles. Now my top favorite class is druid. A very close second is shaman. They are very similar class. Both are nature magicians, and both are hybrid. That really appeals to me. I very much prefer magicians. Magicians of all kinds are awesome. I also like the flavor of nature. A bit part is getting into my two favorite kinds of magic. One kind is shapeshifting, especially into animals. That is what the druid does. The other kind is elemental powers. That is what the shaman does. I enjoy playing with all sorts of classes. So I prefer the hybrid classes. It is fun for one character to do a little bit of everything. The classes heavily vary based on the spec. Personally I like to go for the two offensive specs of each nature classes. I do have four nature magician characters.
My favorite race is night elves. I love elves for being so magical and graceful. A close second for my favorite race is blood elves. Night elves are major environmentalists, and they are a part of the Alliance. that is super awesome. One nice thing about the night elves is that they get cat mounts. It is cool. I am a cat person. So in keeping with that, I prefer a cat theme. I have two lovely night elf ladies in my character roster. One is a druid that turns into a cat. I know what the druid specs are called. However I prefer to refer to what animal form they specialize. This druid is my main. My other night elf is a hunter that has pet cats. Technically she is a survival hunter. Animal choice is mostly an aesthetic thing. It usually isn't affected by spec.
My second main is a male dranei shaman. He is of the elemental spec. Elemental seems so cool, so I wanted to do that right away. It is the ranged damage spec. This race and class combo has been available, since I played for the first time in BC. However in retrospect I think it is amusing. There is such a good avatar pun. I even named the character Avatarel. The race is a blue alien, which is like James Cameron's Avatar. The class has elemental magic, like Avatar the Last Airbender. It is so funny.
Recently I did two tauren. There are only two Horde races I like. One is blood elves. They are awesome because they are pretty and magical elves. The other is tauren. Tauren may look scary at first. However they are very kind and noble once one gets used to them. they are sweet cattle furries. Playing a tauren has a really sweet perk of having access to a lot of great classes. Tauren can play all the hybrid classes plus hunter and priest. That is nice. I like to take advantage of it and play tauren in the nature classes. It does fit well with the culture. Tauren are really into nature, animals and spirits. That is super cool. I even like this aspect in real world Native Americans. Here are my two tauren. One is a bull that is a moonkin druid. Oh, playing moonkin is just bliss. The other is a cow that is an enhancment shaman. Enhancement is just about as awesome as elemental. It just deals damage close up.
Both hybrid nature classes used to be super challenging to play. The game is easier these days. So that made the two classes easier. Shaman isn't too tricky. It is just a matter of keeping weapon buffs and shield buffs active while doing a few damage dealing attacks. There is a nice heal on standby. Druid is a whole lot easier than it used to be. One just needs to stay in whatever form they specialize in, and they can cosistently win battles. Playing a druid of a different spec almost feels like playing a different class entirely. Mages and rogues seem so fun in theory, because of their high damage. In practice, they are difficult and even frustrating because they have such weak defenses. Now I know that a great alternative is the druid class. Moonkin replaces mage. Cat replaces rogue. Moonkin and cat are offensive, so they are still very exciting. Then there are things that are better. One is having better flaver with the whole nature and animal thing. Another is having healing abilities to use in times of trouble. That healing is such a godsend. The increased armor of moonkin form is nice too. Both cat and moonkin are very doable in he current game. They can even come off as being easy. Elemental and enhancement shaman is a nice alternative too.
I wish these classes were more widely available. I do have two ideas. One is that worgen get the shaman class. Then they can be wolves that turn into ghost wolves. Maybe the wolf form makes the whole race deeply in touch with nature. Then some access the elements. The other is that pandaren get the druid class. They are furries, so they are good at turning into furries. The races with druids tend to be the environmentalist type. This would be night elves, tauren and even trolls. Worgen not so much. They tend to be stuck up Victorian guys who happen to turn into wolf furries. Yet they still get the druid class because they are furries. There is also some lore about how wolf form came from forbidden druid magic. I think pandaren can be druids too, because they are furries. There can be some justification. Maybe some pandaren are Daoist, and they really get into the way of nature. The bear form can be a full blown panda without the anthropomorphizing. The cat form can be a tiger. That would be cool. If i could have a pandaren druid, I would specialize in bear form for obvious reasons. For now I plan on having an upcoming worgan do bear form. Wolves and bears are distant relaatives.
Where do you think the rogue class ranks in regard to difficulty? I just wanna be a ninja who can sneak around and kill targets with high burst damage.

Nice overview, nothing against it, but it wouldn't have helped me much when I was really new to the game. This is great for people who already have a solid grasp on mmos in general. When you're really new, and clueless (as I was), you just have to try a bit of everything, the first character you make doesn't need to be your main character. No pressure, just experiment freely. You'll find what fits you best eventually. :)

ok i am returning after 15 years, our guild beat the original WOTLK and i quit soon after. i looked at wow classic but it was too bland, i looked at the latest wow and while it looked better and played a lot better, i just didn't get it. i started at the beach and the beach felt nice, good quest progression and somewhat of a campaign storyline with a nice easy dungeon at the end, then BAM ported to ogrimmar, then BAM ported to zandalar, i just felt like it was really rushing me. now that im in Zandalar is this where it really starts for me, or am i going to be swept through the lands with no real continuity? i just felt like there was a lot i was 'supposed' to know, but i really dont as i have not followed the game in 15 years. it kind of turned me off and i stopped playing yesterday after arriving at zandalar and doing the first 10 quests or so... does it settle down? can i actually immerse myself in this impromptu storyline? do i keep going and give it a chance?
I just went to Chromie in Org, and chose a timeline or expansion to level through. I felt the same at first. I didnt want to quest in zandalar cause I didnt really like the place that much, so I chose the Shadowlands expansion to level in, I didnt play that expansion at all. Just see Chromie in org and chosee what expansion to level in. If you are still playing it,
