- Continuing our videos on upgrading the Lost Caverns of Ixalan precons, today is Explorers of the Deep, the Merfolk deck that likes the Explore mechanic to pump up our puny fish and make them more menacing.

I was going to ask "but what should I cut?" but then I checked the description. Very nice video, keep at it!
Yeah, I decided to change it up with these videos and leave the cuts part in the description and use that time to talk about what is new and reprinted to get a feel for the deck before going into what I'd put in. The flow of things feels a little better like this, but I'm not ruling out going back to doing the cuts section in video.
@@twilightscallmtg for what's it worth, I agree with this approach, cuts are way less interesting than additions and maybe exploring (pun intended) the synergies between main deck and upgrades
This commander is proving to be wildly powerful, from games I've already seen played. It's a shame he won't be available in historic brawl but I'm excited to try Nicanzil, the uncommon legendary regarding an arena commander.
Explore was one of my favorite mechanics from original Ixalan so its cool to see a deck and commander themed around it.
Yes, on reading it doesn't sound amazing until you realize it's makes all your merfolk explore. And I realize now I missed a bet here. Roaming Thone, name merfolk, Hakbal would trigger twice a turn. I'd likely slot that in over one of the unblockable merfolk.

I'm glad you liked it. If that kind of thing interests you, I have a playlist called 'Polish Up My Precon' where I keep my precon upgrade videos since I started doing them with the Lord of the Rings decks. I just add to it as more precons release.
Good job! I like that you stick with the merfolk theme!
I'm glad you liked it. I try to stick heavily on themes of what the precons are designed for when doing these videos. It's not about super powering them up but to make them more thematic and in-world if enough cards exist from that world to work with.
Merrow Harbinger is also a good addition to this deck

I'd ditch the mage mentor, for a vodalian hexcatcher. It's just a strict upgrade, imo.
It is, but for the video I was trying to be Ixalan heavy for the theme of the deck. Vodalia is on Dominaria so I left it out for that reason. But if I was going for more power, Hexcatcher would be in there.
@@twilightscallmtg I hear you! I run more Ixalani merfolk than normal as well, but lullmage is from Zendikar (atleast he is bipedal). Tapping down 7 merfolk to stop a removal spell or boardwipe, is going to leave you wide open and if you're the problem being mostly wide open isn't going to do you any favors most of the time. That overcosted 2/2 isn't going to generate tokens unless you're running alot of counter-magic any way. If you're going for flavor, i'd run jungleborn pioneer instead, it is an over costed 2/2 but gives you a 1/1 hexproof token when it enters and will give you one more explore trigger off Hakbal. Or merfolk cave-diver an extra unblockable never hurts!👍 Great video btw.
