    I live on my 47 foot sailboat and fix sailboats for a living. You have done fantastic and inspiring work. The video was riveting and a tribute to your skills, ingenuity, craftsmanship and perseverance, and all for reasonable cost. Totally inspirational as was your rescue from on the rocks in Georgia in another video. I take my hat off to you Sir! Well done!

    We built our steel boat IRON MISTRESS from a bare hull and deck and sailed her around the world and spent 2 years in NZ. Along the way so we could appreciate the work , sacrifice and drive for you to complete this vision! Incredible- all these young you tubers could learn a whole lot from your craftsmanship and knowledge base

      Nelson is where Lynda and I grew up and spent 3 years in the same class at school together. Our lives have a background in the marine industry. Having accomplished so much with our sailing background, when friends and businesses realized that the refit was about sailing Windora to extreme destinations and not about making money the discounted parts and materials were unbelievable. In their eyes we were living what they dreamed of accomplishing. All the best Phil and Lynda

    Just came across this well-done video. Given that you sail in ice-infested waters, can you shed more light (possibly another video) on why and how a wooden boat with fibreglass cladding (as you did) is a good approach (Erebus was, after all, made of wood.... but there must be some caveats dealing with internal structure and strength?) (I did see the video of the grounding in South Georgia and wondered how a fibreglass vessel would have withstood that pounding without puncturing the hull). I am intrigued!

    • @philandlyndachristieson8808
      @philandlyndachristieson8808  Před 2 lety

      In all my years spent around the world looking on thousands of wooden vessels I have never found any boat built this strong. Often someone would tell me they have a strongly built vessel until they visit Windora. Phil

  • @stepheniedickinson8688

    A fantastic rebuild. Did you consider upgrading the CQR anchors to something more modern? During our 5 year circumnavigation, CQR anchors were a common factor in draggings.

    • @philandlyndachristieson8808
      @philandlyndachristieson8808  Před 3 lety +1

      I never got round to building a new anchor, Windora has such a large 4 blade prop 28"x17" driven by a powerful 6b cummins that when you back down on the anchor you definitely know when it is dug in. Plus the anchor is attached to 120 metre's of 1/2" chain. Being a CQR it always needs an extra 10 metre's to set. If we waited to get every bit of gear right we would be too old to go sailing.

    Impressive! What were your most important improvements? I mean, always when I am sailing I think of many things that 'someday I will make better'. I guess you had a long list of improvements. For me the lowered deck 'kuip' as we call that in Dutch. It is the best thing you did I think. But I am curious about all those little things you improved.

I have rebuilt almost every moving and mechanical part. Taken off every piece of deck hardware. Stripped the mast and painted, with all new standing and running rigging… you know the story! • @philandlyndachristieson8808
      @philandlyndachristieson8808  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes, self draining. In all our years of sailing we have definitely put it to the test and
      we have never had green water on deck or in the cockpit. Windora's displacement is 21 tonnes, the cockpit holds less than 1 tonne, its wouldn't be enough to have much effect. It's difficult to get across to people the seaworthiness of this vessel. Athol Burns had a reputation for extremely seaworthy vessel designs for NZ conditions, especially Cook Strait.

      Windora's design is very capable of taking good care of her pilothouse. Athol Burns designed over 700 vessels in his lifetime most of them built for extreme conditions in the Cook Strait. Plus we have been in seastates most sailers would only not want to dream about. Phil
