Garcia Exploration 45: A complete boat tour by Pete Goss

- The famous British yachtsman Pete Goss has sailed more than 250000 nautical miles at sea. Pete Goss became a hero in the 1996 Vendee Globe for rescuing French competitor Raphaël Dinelli. Now that he retired from ocean sailing competitions, this sailing, sea kayaking and polar exploration specialist lives different kind of adventures. Pete and his wife Tracey now spend much time onboard their Garcia Exploration 45 "Pearl of Penzance". Pete guides us during a complete tour of this blue water aluminum centreboarder at the 2019 Annapolis Sailboat Show. Enjoy this complete visit, and don't hesitate to ask for more details
The word "Hero" is often overused - Not in this case Pete Goss is the real deal, Pete did not "just" rescue Raphaël Dinelli, in a hurricane in the Southern Ocean he turned his boat around, into the storm, effectively ending his race, to go back and rescue Raphaël. In France he is held in very high esteem, rightly so, he was awarded an MBE and the Legion d'Honneur, his opinions on a good boat deserve the utmost respect. I also recommend Pete's excellent book "Close to the Wind"
I have never heard of Garcia Yachts, but I certainly have now because if Pete Goss likes it, that matters in my opinion.
Wow. I remember this event when it happened. It was on the news for days. Every news program was giving his position and where he was in relation to the French guy that needed picking up.
He gave a pretty good endorsement of this boat. I'd buy whatever he's selling.

This guy is naturally, effortlessly interesting imho. I will definately see if his book is in our library as I cannot afford to buy it right now

Another source for this story is the book Godforsaken Sea. It's about the 1996-1997 Vendee Globe race where this happened. A gripping story.
The fact that Goss chose this boat speaks volumes.
I am an engineer - this is the type of design I appreciate, smart, safe, reliable.

I had a pint with Pete years ago. The cheeky Norwegian sailing lad I was hanging around with at that time said to me "I'm gonna ask Pete for sponsorship to continue sailing etc hes in that pub over there come on." So we went and he did. Pete laughed and opened his wallet pulled out two twenties and gave them to him. Ahh brilliant. Yeh what a bloke.

Wow!! Pete you are a legend! My husband, David has fallen in love with this yacht. Mind you, his love has switched from Deerfoot to Fleming to Nelson to Concordia to Oyster. As a Master Mariner, he has racked up tens of thousands of miles. BUT never before has he woken me up at 6am to tell me he has a NEW favourite yacht. Soooo, I have bought a ticket for tonight's Euromillions and I promise you that if I win, he will be phoning you to buy one. 🤞

very glad to see such an endorsement of centreboards.. Really is the best of both worlds..except for the additional cost

What a wonderful advocate Peter Goss is for an amazing boat.
I was lucky enough to hear Peter deliver a talk some 25 years ago what great bloke. Garcia will make lots of sales as Peter had bought a boat and endorses it.
A real boat that puts almost all other boat builders to shame. Great presentation as well. Bravo!

I really enjoyed meeting you two in Annapolis. I know Tracey doesn't like being on camera, but in life, she is a hoot and loved talking to her. The line to get on your boat that looked bran new was always long so I didn't want to take up to much time. It is my dreamboat and hopefully, I have one soon. You met so many people but I bet I am the only one from Montana. Cheers both you and boat are truly lovely.

We had a Wauquiez 43 pilot saloon designed by Ed Dubois which we sailed around the world over 8 years. Very similar concept of a raised saloon with lots of space below for equipment etc and 2 big cabins. Also same rigging (slutter). Sold it last year. That was a marvellous boat but this looks even better being in aluminium and with lifting keel (wish we had that in the Pacific).
Wauquiez PS 43 is a very good boat indeed. Garcia Exploration concept is more radical on different points, such as thermical insulation for example. A matter of choice, regarding each ones’ sailing project! BR,

I understand that with this centerboard boat, you do not lower the righting moment unlike the lifting keel ones when they keels are in lifted position. But the real issue is, when you build the ballast in the hull like in this boat, the ballast is not as deep as the lifting keel ones (when down) hence the righting moment is already lower when you need it most, like in the middle of high seas?

It would be interesting to see Garcia release a model with an electric engine which would be a game changer as the yacht appears to generate surplus electricity

@@GarciaYachts_official are the Southerly yachts lifting keel... I think they are. Not sure I fully understand the difference. I have a hinged centre board but it's on a 12ft dinghy!
