Just read through may replies below and felt I had to share my experiences with the EVO. I have two EVO and my son has one. Between us we have 30 batteries. Both copters and batteries have been flawless. I am surprised at the amount of error in landing on Dustin's EVO. Our EVOs land within six inches or less every time. I have extensive first hand experience with six DJI Mavic Pro 2 with Hasselblad All six of the Mavic Pro 2 I have flown consistently land 2-3 feet off center on a variety of landing targets. I definitely prefer the EVO camera with 8 power "lossless zoom" (DJI term for 4K zoom) over the Mavic Pro 2 Hasselblad. I also have three DJI Inspire, a P4 Pro, and a P3 Pro. I won't buy a Mavic. One of my commercial training operations is to provide flight training to utility companies for power line inspection. Having many flight hours on both Mavic Pro 2 and EVO with hundreds of hours of real world commercial flights including utility line inspection, tower inspection, and aerial camera operations for videography training, EVO tops my list of preferred aircraft for these purposes. It is also a great FPV machine for simply flying around collecting great video. I have many flights within DJI airport NFZ and never have to ask permission when flying the EVO and always have to give DJI a cell phone number and ask permission to fly in airspace the FAA authorizes me to fly. I am a licensed commercial pilot as well as a Part 107 remote pilot certificate holder. The FAA authorizes me to fly and I will not ask DJI for permission. That and constant forced updates is why I am phasing out DJI products for other aircraft that don't force updates and NFZ.
Service is an important consideration when you spend the money these aircraft cost. My son had a minor crash into a tree with his EVO and had to send it back to Autel for gimbal repair. The service was stellar and price was VERY reasonable. DJI service is about as bad as it gets. I am not trying to bash DJI. They make great hardware. I dimply will not tolerate DJI intrusion and control over my flight operations.

@Kay I don't doubt the man if his business is aerial inspection of high power lines and structures. I just fly mine for fun and I have 1 of all the dji drones going back to original DJI Phantom to inspire 1. I see no reason to buy the more expensive DJI quadcopters for recreational purposes I have the original Autel evo and the poweregg & powereye and numerous drones xkx and the like. If you're addicted to the hobby like me you wait for the Particular drone you're interested in to come down in price or flash sale? I've probably easily spent $30.000 on rc aircraft and all sorts of quadcopters and accessories since the late 70's tho back then your controller required a good sized folding table to sit it on. No neck strap :). No gps and used a form of high octane fuel. I loved the smell of rc fuel burning. I really enjoy the hobby and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a birds eye view and mostly stress free flying thanks to gps. Have a great day and stay well. Sincerely William Horsley

    • @WilliamHorsley1962
      @WilliamHorsley1962 Před 4 lety

@Kay yes it can get expensive and frustrating. I think DJI has the worst customer service considering the average price. It's like buying an Apple phone you expect more from customer service. I've found that the evo is plug & play no constant updates and best of all Autel evo doesn't control where you can fly. On top of that I like its video quality and wifi that's as good as DJI. Have a great day and stay safe. Sincerely William Horsley

Nice update Dustin! I've had my Evo awhile now (had plenty of time to get well acquainted with the bird) and I was curious to hear your take on the "evolution" of the Evo. In short, I can say my experience is somewhat different than yours. I will explain.
Yes, the Evo does lose a bit of altitude in "Ludicrous" mode. Something to be careful with for sure. But I've have no problem hitting 45mph without assistance from the wind.
Precision landing? After 150+ flights, my Evo hasn't missed the mark by more than 6 INCHES even a single time. I was shocked to see yours miss by that much.
Furthermore, I've had absolutely zero "jerkiness" issues with the gimbal since the updates. Smooth footage galore. And while I'm not a big user of pre-programmed flight, I find the Evo orbit very satisfactory if used in precision mode with everything slowed down.
Lest anyone think I haven't compared some of DJI'S best with the Evo, I have, and I can't help feeling liberated with the Evo. Gone are DJI'S time-wasting, mind-numbing, and univited forced updates and NFZ warnings (often needless in many areas). And I must admit, as a retired American merchant marine ship's captain who's accustomed to calling my own shots, I've always despised having to ask someone in China for permission to fly my own drone! And what about having to allow DJI unfettered access to your device just to use their app? Talk about a lack of privacy!
I know plenty of hardcore DJI fans are having a tough time wrapping their head around how good the Evo actually is, but I believe an open mind is a good place to start.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  Před 5 lety +2

The EVO is good competition. Some of the differences you stated could have been due to the wind in this review. I can tell you though that I did the same POI this same day at speed with the Mavic 2 ("Mavic 2 Pro 3 Months Later" vid up tomorrow) and DJI still has the edge on Autel for incredible smoothness even in stronger wind. Yes DJI has the whole nfz and update thing but I have been flying alot of drones for a long time and know perfection (albeit pricier) when I see it.

Nice video. yours are always fun to watch and listen to. I like that the Evo doesn't have mandatory no-fly zones allowing one to use common their own common sense. I can see why you test the accuracy of the auto landing but I can't understand why some people want to to do them so often. I prefer to palm land my air and spark for the most part for two reasons. It's cleaner and I really think it makes a drone look less threatening to the on the fence observer. Actually, I go out of my way to avoid flying around people but that doesn't always work. By the way, I'm surprised that skate park was empty. The one near me is busy all the time with all ages and occasionally a dog or two being towed. Talk about "if at first you don't succeed" ...you just have to keep getting up and giving it another try. I'm always impressed!

I liked my Xstar premium but it had a few issues. Aultel decided to dump Xstar unfortunately which sucked because now it’s left with a half baked app and firmware that’s not in any way bug free. Was considering the EVO but just lost my faith in this companies ability to get things done and done right. Hopefully they stick with this EVO line up and not bail on it in a year like the Xstar and leave people out it the cold with a $1,000 drone that’s not working properly. Great review though.

3DR Solo did their orbit where you didn't have to fly over the target first, I believe they were the first to introduce smartshots, and have always been impressed with 3DR in that respect. I was very disappointed when my mavic air couldn't do the same shot as I was filming an outdoor event where I couldn't fly over the participants of the event before orbit. Thanks for doing these videos!

@@priceburnett It should be possible to mark any point in space by flying somewhere, pointing at it on the map, then flying a short distance, and pointing at the same point. I think the most IMPORTANT feature in all of these newer 4k capable drones is the lack of ability to adjust gimbal end point softening. Some allow you to change the speed but it still comes to a complete jerky stop. Compare that to most DJI products where as the end point can be smoothed/softened. None of these competitors have this and it's impossible to shoot quality smooth video in my opinion. If any of you don't understand maybe Dustin can give us an example. ☮️ Wheelchair John in Idaho 😎

Not having FORCED geofencing and no-fly zones is a HUGE plus for Autel that sets them far above DJI. I live about 10 miles from an old airport that was closed several years ago. I can fly my Autel anytime I want with zero issues. Because the airport is still listed as a "no-fly" zone, my friend's DJI will not give him the OK to fly! There's no longer a tower, so there's no one to call for permission - he simply cannot fly unless he drives some 30 minutes away. That is insane. I fly wherever and whenever I want and it is safe to do so. And, like you said, not being forced to update when you don't want to - that's another WIN for Autel as well. I love my Evo. I really can't say enough good things about it!

Nice job as always, Dustin. I enjoy watching and have learned a lot while reviewing them for purchases.
One note for the EVO though...While in the "Orbit Mode" setup screen, there is a settings option (wrench) that will allow you to set the center point of the orbit WITHOUT having to fly over it!
    Maybe check that out.
As a related side note...There is also a similar setting menu when in the "Dynamic Tracking" mode that enables the reversing while tracking and the obstacle avoidance while tracking, as well! That, as well as the options for the Orbit, don't seem to be acknowledged by most of the reviews/opinions.
I agree that the EVOs flight while doing that orbit for you is not as smooth as the Mavic 2's yet but I am sure that the more people like yourself point it out, Autel will address it

I think I tried the "Ludicrous" mode once since they added it, but don't think I'll use it much. I got the Evo mostly for its camera/video quality, and so I'm more likely to use the precision mode. I've slowed my gimbal down to 30%. I've also done some tweaking of the camera controls to get the video to where I like it. To be honest, I really couldn't see much "head wag" as you described it. It is much better than when I first got mine back in August, so I'm happy with it. A lot of times I do the 'Fly around point' manually, with the controls on the RC. Why? Because I can .. ha ha. Not sure you're going to get precision landing in Ludicrous mode. I generally fly mine in either Precision or Standard mode, and I have the same landing mat as you, and it usually hits it every time. BTW, I've never done a compass calibration on mine. I have done several gimbal calibrations, especially after the last FW update, which is supposed to store gimbal calibration info. Overall, I'm very happy with my Evo, and especially happy about not having to do a 'compass dance' or be bothered by nag screens about Airports, or Updates, etc. We've got snow on the ground now (and ice) and its about 28 deg. F. We might get up to 36 in a couple days, so I'm hoping to get out when we get some decent weather .. I'll still be wearing gloves though! Mahalo!

@@karthurjr Hey, congrats on getting the Evo. Make sure you have all the latest Firmware updates from Autel's site. I think the current one is v1.3.3.25 . If you have more than 1 battery, you may have to repeat the update for each battery (after you select how long you want it to wait until it starts discharging). Subsequent updates for just a battery are quick. Make sure you have the latest App for your device (Autel Explorer). I use an Android device with a decent sized screen (Galaxy Note 4). You can mount a tablet to it with an adapter if you need to. Go thru all the options available using the App. You can also make changes using just the display, but I think its a bit easier using the App, as you can scroll thru the options on the bottom of the screen. It may take some time getting used to using that right wheel on the RC and the button. (the buttons on the back of the RC are NOT programmable yet .. maybe in the next update). I've NEVER done a compass calibration on mine, and Autel says you don't need to do one unless you get a warning to do one. Make sure you have about 10 GPS birds before taking off in GPS mode.
Even in standard mode, there are several speeds you can select. There is also a precision mode which smooths all the controls for more cinematic video. The 'Ludicrous' mode is REALLY fast, so beware .. it doesn't stop on a dime. When changing batteries, hold the Evo in one hand by the underbelly, and then use your other hand to push down the release button. Some guys were pressing down on the battery to change it while the craft had its legs out and on the floor. They developed some stress cracks in the arms that way .. so hold it when inserting/removing batteries. Do a gimbal calibration on a dead level surface .. takes about 5 minutes to do. You've got time on the XStar Premium, so you shouldn't need too much other coaching. Good luck, and happy shooting! BTW, shooting video in 4K 60 uses up SD card space FAST. Unless you have a 'super computer', editing 4K 60 video can make your video editor 'choke' and crash (my Filmora does that all the time .. they are supposed to update it for higher res. video soon). Cheers!

Great review I really like this bird it seems very user friendly,I have a Mavic and something about it just seems a little forbolding and cold were as the Autel has a little collor and much more cheerful. Nothing like paying all that money to something that will report you to the authorities if you don't play by the rules haha.

Looks nice man. Of all the drones you've reviewed recently this one is my favorite the anafi is pretty good too. Not sure about it though as i've not been able to see it in person.
Off-topic but i wonder if it's worth investing in a xiaomi 4k camera for the drone or just dump it on ebay as is and get the new A3 from them?

I'm guessing you'd recommend getting this drone as a 2nd option to my DJI M2P? From a biz standpoint, makes sense to have one that isn't so harshly regulated like DJI drones. Hate being limited in places I can fly, when I'm hired to do a job for hire. Has there been some updates over the past 6 months or so with this drone, now that it's late 2019? Thanks for the great reviews!

To adjust drone landing location it needs to be turned off then on again. The drone learns it's location when it is turned ON!

Hi, great update. I would like to ask that I noticed that you had it in ludicrous mode when doing the rth. on the second try it was in ludicrous mode only during take off. Since all sensors are off in this mode could this have effected the accuracy of the rth?
I also want to share that I purchased my evo from best buy online. It was my birthday so best-buy gave me an instant $100 off plus a $100 gift card. Plus the shoulder bag and extra batteries plus an additional $25 off and 0 down 18 months 0 interest. What a deal!!!

  • @chrishorsten7980

Great video. Is the Evo using GPS for precision landings? If so, you
cannot expect it to land on your target every time. GPS is not pin point
accurate unless you are using a WAAS enabled system, or some other form of correction, and even that is
only usable (available) for a an aircraft on a precision approach. 3 meter accuracy is
about all you can expect to get with the average GPS, and anything
better is pure luck. Maybe if EVO and DJI program some target recognition code for their landing pads, they could incorporate that into the drone's final approach.

The only true test of one quad to another is to own and fly them over time. All the rest is pure conjecture. Also, why are you buying a quad with a 4K camera? Is it for flying or taking pictures? Weight these two factors and your pocketbook and act accordingly. By the way, enjoyed the video especially since it was in Hawaii 😁!

Just got my EVO. Coming from the Q5004k I expected a better camera. My EVO photos are very blurry and video isn't great at all. Am I missing something? Is there a camera lens calibration on the EVO? Or could mine be faulty. And I don't want to even talk about the EVO's auto exposure that's constantly moving. I've been flying my Q5004k for 4 years so I'm not a beginner. Any comments or thoughts would be appreciated.
