How to use rotary encoders with microcontrollers?
In this video I visually demonstrate how rotary encoders work. Instead of giving schematic and code to copy and paste into your own project, I want you to LEARN how rotary encoders work. In the end, they are very simple components and once you understand how they operate, you'll know how to read rotary encoders with microcontrollers without libraries.
When I first tried to use rotary encoder, most datasheets and other documentations were talking about outputs "A" and "B", but once I saw someone calling them "Clock" and "Data", something clicked and I immediately understood how to read the signals. Many beginners have said the same thing... They have made this more complicated in their minds than it really is.
If you want to get breakout PCBs for rotary encoder, I found these breakout boards with place for rotary encoder and multiple LEDs, designed and shared by "Artur Jasowicz". You can order the bare/unpopulated PCBs with just few clicks:

To clarify: This video is about these very common standard mechanical rotary encoders. These are most popular, but not the only type of rotary encoders. There are things like absolute position rotary encoders, optical rotary encoders and many, many more variations , which work differently.
