Four Figure GPUs - Are High Prices Here to Stay?

  • With the large increase in GPU prices, are these temporary or are these high prices here to stay. Will the high prices redefine the traditional enthusiast gamer? We have yet to live through a full cycle of $1,000+ CPUs being sold used without the effect of crypto. How will the greater financial losses on used GPUs affect the new enthusiast gamers in future generations?

The biggest shame is that Radeon are still trying to squeeze into those same four-figures with underperforming flagship cards.. Nvidia is probably going to start leaving the 500 and under segment wide open, and Radeon will never manage the volume (AMD will never allocate them the wafer supply) to flood the low-end. Wasn't that what chiplets were supposed to be for? So we can get something next gen with RX 5700 performance on a little PCB with a single fan cooler, for 150-200 bucks and it's wonderful?

I guess I am forever spoiled and tainted by the 350$ GTX970 (at launch!) being a good deal despite the problems it had. Seeing the 4070 (albeit Ti) launch at like 900$ is insane.

I hope Intel becomes a serious competitor in the GPU space. I'd like to see the same kind of battle going on with GPUs as we see with CPUs right now. Relative price to performance of CPUs is going wild while GPUs stagnate because AMD is not interested in competing with Nvidia in the same way they are with Intel, and it's a damn shame, because once upon a time Radeon made some killer GPUs. I still have my HIS HD7950 around here somewhere. That card was awesome, and back then AMD was giving Nvidia all they could handle, and it was good for the market. These days it's just "How much can I gouge you for with our current lineup?" on both sides.

Over the past few years, they've overhyped multiple releases (like Vega) and when they underdeliver on their claims, they just lose more and more market share. To me, these high prices are obviously not going to stick. The 4090 might have sold well because of it's outstanding performance, but once you go even one step down, the 4080 is having a really hard time selling.
I think the top tier cards will continue to dramatically increase in performamce and cost until they stop selling (I'm guessing that point is $3k).
But how many people really need a top tier GPU? People need to stop believing the myth that you need a top spec card to enjoy games. I have a GTX 1060 6gb and at 1080p I can still run everything at high settings at 60fps. Cyberpunk, Elden Ring, God of War, and Half Life Alyx all ran nearly flawlessly after lowering the settings a touch. We need more people voting with their wallets for the cheaper cards, and even used cards when you find a good deal.
Big shout-out to the RX 6700 XT and RTX 3060 TI which both hover around $300 on eBay and can comfortably max out new games at 1440p (ignoring raytracing) at 60+ fps or high refresh rate 1080p. You can even do 4k if you lower the settings a touch.

But nowadays I don’t really partake in AAA gaming, preferring to play lower tech indie/open-source games and I’m probably sticking to 1080p. If the prices and sizes of video cards keep up at this rate, I might opt out of the current generation.

The situation as it is now from black friday and onwards the only gpu deals around are on Jensen's 4080s selling 100$ or 200$ above 3080s and 6800Xt. In fact if someone wants to pick a new 3090 from a decent AIB right now he will have to pay 200$ more than a 4080 which is crazy. I think this gen is going to be turing 2.0. They're not going to sell in the volume Nvidia would like. I think the biggest reason they're selling at all is that the huge flood of used mining cards never materialized. We got some, and prices were better but not in the volume that would just crush the used market. We never saw sub $400 3080's. The other part of competition is availability of alternatives and the used market was not as strong as we'd hope it would be post crypto mining. There's still time, we could see a q1 flood. If 3080 Ti's drop under $500, I'll just buy one of those, undervolt it and definitely skip this generation (even though I got a 6800 for cheap. I got catched by AMD slot in Nvidia.
GTX1050 for 3280CZK(109USD) in end of 2017 is just history of budget pricing.
But transistor count with 6650xt came 3,3x for me, memory capacity 4x, better cooler, that useless dumb PCB back plate making nothing good IMO, just add costs.
3060 sells for either 8400CZK (single fan Palit) or 8949CZK (Gainward 2fan). Thats 2y old MSRP.

IMO, this sort of ridiculous pricing cannot last. Who's going to buy these cards at these prices? Mining is as dead as disco, so it's back to selling to us regular gamers/enthusiasts. And from what I can see re availability of 40xx cards, not enough people seem to be falling for these prices. Unless a new mining-boom emerges in the very near future (which I doubt), us enthusiasts and gamers are NVidia's only customers.
It'll be interesting to see where on the price-chart they'll place the 4060/Ti and 4070 - but I don't have much hope those will be priced more reasonably. I for one had planned to perhaps upgrade my six month old RTX 3070 to a 4070 or even 4070 Ti because of VR ... but I surely won't do it at these prices. I'll just live with my 3070 being slightly inadequate in VR and do more non-VR gaming - for which that card is more than enough for my 1440p needs. I would imagine that many other folks out there with similar GPUs currently in their systems will do the same. I mean... even back in the days when I never had to spend more than €200 to 400 for a GPU, I didn't swap out my cards with the launch of every new generation.

The problem is young men. None strive to get their Driver's Licenses, even less covet a cool automobile and with a pedal bike and man-bun being symbols of the status that they are comfortable portraying to the opposite sex, it seems to leave them with ALOT of spare income that they are able to dedicate to overpriced Video Cards to occupy all of their solitary time at home, because the girls sure aren't beating down their doors. It's all about priorities I guess.....

@@drewjackson3858 - Market share does not equal total units sold. It just means your competition sold even less than you did. GPU sales on the whole are down 42% year-over-year, and discreet GPU sales in total for 2022 are at a 20-year low. This can't be simply explained away by the mining crash because mining wasn't around 15-20 years ago.
I wonder what else is leading to this dip in total GPU sales. Could it be, I dunno, the stupidly high prices maybe?

@@Kryptic1046 Actually, I just saw something on that. I'm not sure high end gpu prices are entirely to blame though. Play COD lately? But yeah, I'm not sure we're in total disagreement.
I've got a job so my Suprim watercooled 4090 is due on Jan 8th. If I were still eighteen I'd say 'screw raytracing' and get a 2080. There's plenty of cards that'll give you good fps for cheap and you'll have a better experience than I did with all those cheaper graphic cards they had back in the day.

@@drewjackson3858 - I already have a Gigabyte OC 4090 because, ironically, the 4090 is in my opinion the only current-gen card worth its price because its performance is so good and it's a halo product. I work as a financial analyst, and the overall upward shift of pricing on everything below the top tier is concerning. I'm not worried about pricing on the highest-end, I'm more concerned about everything below it. The 4080 for example doesn't have halo appeal, its specs and performance are nowhere near the 4090, but Nvidia still thinks you should pay $1200+ for it. Then there's $800 for the upcoming 70-class card, which could be argued is actually a 60ti-class card.
The pricing of supposed mainstream cards is quickly getting out of control and I don't think it's healthy for the market overall.
