How An Ancient Hawaiian Food Still Makes It To The Plate - Dining on a Dime

- In a classic Hawaiian meal, poi is the main starch on the plate. It plays the same role in a dish that rice often would: It's filling, and it complements the other flavors in the meal. In this episode of Dining on a Dime, host Lucas Peterson stops by the Waiahole Poi Factory for a truly Hawaiian meal (and a music lesson on the nose flute).

I love Lucas. Honestly one of my favorite food hosts. He's so respectful, educated, and well spoken in the Eater videos I've seen, especially when they are about an unfamiliar cuisine, his decency is on display in how he navigates it and the culture its from. Also, his moment with the kid...my ovaries may never recover.
God bless your ovarels.
ShoMeSho ikr he's charming af
ShoMeSho How about zero enthusiasm and always tired looking.
Nick Smith I agree with you. this guy seems like he's just there because they made him go there.
I love these comments about how Lucas approaches these episodes with kindness and authenticity. I do feel like I could trust him.
The way Lucas describes the food is absolutely perfect. As a professional cook, those are the exact type of descriptor words that we would all love our servers to use because they can truly make one salivate and satiate for something of that nature. The only way to be able to do what Lucas does is to 1) eat lots and try everything and 2) do some actual research on cuisine/cultures and not just base your food knowledge off of which hype restaurants you've eaten at (which Lucas clearly does as he hosts ... Dining on a Dime heh).
That guy looks like a Hawaiian Christian Bale.
gnt4l I think he looks like Charles Manson...
Christian Manson?
Nonsense, he's clearly Jimmy Smits.
I was thinking that lol
lmao! I was thinking the same thing! He looks like Christian Bale in "The Fighter!"
Lucas is getting me through this day. I thank you Lucas and Eater for this.
Glad we could help with your day, thanks for watching!
I love how respectful and educated on the culture he is. This is a platform to reach out to so many people who want to learn more about Hawaii and its cuisine; unfortunately, a lot of the times it is misrepresented by people who butcher the language and/or traditions or rudely critique the food and think it's funny.
Lucas is the Mr. Rodgers of food journalism. // Connecting with kids, chefs, and community at ease. // follow me at Asianfoodnerd on Instagram for more food poetry
Rayfil Wong Great description!
Rayfil Wong food journalism - I aspire to be!!!!
Rayfil Wong LOL............ ty I couldn't put my finger on it.
Rayfil Wong boring AF. Hopeless presenter...
Anyone else notice how Nick Smith tried to repeatedly write how boring Lucas is in every single video in hopes that someone will care about what he says 😂😂😂 This guy needs a life
In a world full of casual slander and insults, I love how Lucas interacts with such careless courtesy. Well done once again Lucas. You bring food to life in a lovely way.
As much as I enjoy watching this series because of Lucas' character and personality. What really gets me is his knowledge in food and how he's able to reference to other cultures of food so well. I'm curious to know how much of this is scripted and if isn't at all, what his culinary background is.
In the Philippines, we have a native dish in the province of Bicol called "Laing" which is basically stewed taro leaves with pork and coconut milk seasoned with "Bagoong" (shrimp paste).
please don't stop the series Lucas, otherwise i would miss you too much
I love how Lucas is always so open to eating new cuisines and experiencing cultures.
Aloysius Tan Um, that's his job...
I like his honesty. He's straight forward and gives his honest opinion, unlike Mark Wiens, where everything is amazing.
My favorite DoaD episode yet. Not because of the food (not that there was anything wrong with it), but because of Lucas. What a great show. Please don't stop.
Nose flute jam session was lit
Lucas, your specific comment about not treating poi as a fetish while at the same time acknowledging its prominence, was quite insightful. I just started watching more of your videos and instances like this have shown me that food is more than just food. It's about the people and community behind it. Thank you for this.
Lucas is simply the best!
That guy looks like a cousin of Keanu Reeves
WOAH...MOST TRIUMPHANT
Keanu is a Hawaiian name. He might be part hawaiian.
@@magicmakerify he is hawaiian
@@Hellen_Erth_ What??😃
I love the series you did in Hawaii. It makes me feel like i'm included in something haha. Especially since people don't really talk about Hawaii in the way that it's being represented in the Eater videos.
Anyone else watch Westworld and notice Lucas in it? I had to pause the screen and be like , "Is that my food guy?"
lucas is in westworld??? which season
Allison First season

Where i am from 8n the Caribbean..we call taro.. dasheen..we boil the roots and make a dish with the young leaves called callaloo..really delish..
Glad the owner knows about mochi. It's immediately what came to mind when I saw them pounding the poi.
Lucas you are the man!
Goes to restaurant, uses fingers. Eats street side food, actually uses utensils. #justlucasthings
In the future we're thinking about giving Lucas a set of HandTrux.
I really like this dude. Mahalo for coming to Hawaii!
SOOOOOOO glad you guys put this up on here !! :) because this isnt on our tv here !! ( in australia)
Fantastic video Lucas
That beef and squid luau is like what we call callaloo in Trinidad & Tobago. There's ochro in ours but it's pretty much the same from the recipes I've seen. That's so cool.
Excellent video! Mahalo nui! I liked and subscribed.
I love taro leave stew! 💕
I miss eating them! 🤙🏾 I'll go visit again!
Lucas is my absolutely fav food journalist :) I hope he comes to New Zealand one day to try NZ Polynesian food and kiwi old classic pavlova and fish and chips.
I may not have eaten there, though I probably passed by there on my way to somewhere else, during an afternoon deluge just like that!
Liko is like a keeper of hawaiian tradition, even though he looks more mixed than full blooded polynesian
Hi Lucas.. ur my new fave!
low key in love with lucas
Taro Roots/Leaves=the Heart of Polynesian Food. Taro+Palusami=Heaven.
How much does that dude from Waiahole Poi Factory look like Jimmy Smits?! :O

Poi is like the sound the taro slime makes when it gets pounded

I have been dying to try true Hawaiian Poi.
Lucas go to Maui too please!
U ate it right dude! Eat the poi with everything.
1:05
So is poi perfectly edible while it’s still doughy like mochi, or is it meant to be watery paste (as a way to increase yield)
squid luau is what it's called, but it is made with tako (octopus)
You should explain the benefits health benefits of Kalo so beneficial to your health mea Ono
DAMN LUCAS... THEM TRICEPS THOOO
poi..sounds interesting..
glass noodles are one of those things that make everything more delicious, probably because theyre so pretty and fun.
tesyn hi tuyet v ngon thank
poi poi~~
Orkel2 poi? ;)
I hit like even before I watched the vid. I had to.
Chicken Long rice is actually a Chinese influenced dish that dates to the 19th century. Native Hawaiians didnt have rice or noodles. Also Lomi Salmon is most likely a 19th-20th century dish. There are no salmon in the waters of Hawaii (too warm), Tomato is a New World plant, didnt grow in Hawaii until Western contact. Everything else looks legit.
Lucas, whats your favourite soccer team?
0:55, wait. is that.. is that supposed to be oahu? Lol wtf.
also, kaneohes in the east not the norf isnt it? when i think of north i think kahuku, north shore, haleiwa
Damn he is so slick
Lucas, I didn't know you were in an episode of Westworld. Are you an actor on top of being a great host and food critic?
That kid is the star of the video. GGMU xD
Luau is delish
