Grandma sounds like a phenomenal woman. Bless her x
Excellent choice, Lucas! Helena’s has been my go-to for Hawaiian food. Mama was a sweet lady always full of aloha. She remembered each of her repeated customers she really made you feel at home.
"I love dem pipis!"
"im sorry?"
LMAO
Nice video featuring Helena's. I don't care how many dozens of upscale restaurants I've eaten at in Waikiki, Kalihi has the best home style food on Oahu. As of August 2017, the city has announced they'd like to "gentrify" the district and extend the Kakaako neighborhood (just off of Waikiki) to downtown and to Kalihi. The people are worried that these mom and pop institutions will disappear. A lot of people don't want development to creep up this way. I'm not from Kalihi but when I want to eat, that's where you'll find me. Helena's, Alicia;s, Golden City, Tei Shoku, Han Yang, Kikuya, Max's of Manila, Mitsuba's, and Gulick Delicatessens, Kalihi Market for Samoan food, Fukuya Japanese Snacks, Jollibees, Aloha Tofu, Ka Lei Eggs, uku planny ox tail soup eateries, every block you'll find a Puerto Rican, Filipino, Chinese, Korean, etc. restaurant with food that will kick your teeth out, plus waterfront shops, warehouses and wholesalers for fruit, bread from several ethnicities, veggies, poi, meat, pig, eggs, chicken, all in the same district. No, to gentrification!
This show should be on Food Network, it's that good.
I am simple man, I see Lucas I click like!
Ty my friend :)
this is a wholesome family show
Ninad Deo I think you're either gay or a personal friend of Lucas.
Nick Smith Sorry to disappoint you but, I'm neither. :) #justafan
DUDE LAY OFF NINAD DEO
I really like the way you introduce the spots that you go to. It really gives me the idea of the place and it's history. KEEP IT UP!
I hope you can visit the Philippines in the future! 😊
And no reply from neither eater nor lucas. Being ignored sure makes my heart ache 😂
+mark murillo wag kang iyaken dito
he will visit Philippines.
thanks buddy
I like how Lucas saunters like a cowboy. I could probably pick him out in a crowd from the way he walks. Almost as distinct as the Duke.
I love when the lady got excited and said "Really? Can I really feed you?!"
Yes, the shortribs are epic. NOT EXAGGERATED AT ALL! LOVE IT!
I like how Lucas regularly interviews random customers. They're often (not always 😐) quite interesting.
Lots of delicious looking classic Hawaiian food today. Mmm, mmm. 👍👍
One of the best places for Hawaiian food. My father took me there when I was a kid and Helena herself served us.
I wait all week to see lucas!!!!!!!!! Lovvvvvvvvving this hawaii series!!
Lucas back at it again with the best food show on youtube!
Even though I have been to Hawaii three times already, I STILL MISSED A LOT OF STUFFS!
This was an awesome episode. Lucas doing it big as usual. Thumbs up.
Make short-ribs out of tofu
This is my favourite series on the channel.
I feel Hawaiian food is a forgotten cuisine. All of this looks so good!
One of the best presenters on whole CZcams. Goed gedaan, Lucas
The way how you introduce restaurant and food it's super cool and makes me starving
I will stand pat that Lucas needs to be doing 20-30 minute shows.
I'm a simple person. I see Lucas in the thumbnail, I press like.
Mai de los Santos
Haha! DM me.
don't ask random pretty girls to message you on the internet, it's weird.
thanks :D
Dining on a Dime is my favorite food commentary series in CZcams :)
Thank You Eater for providing such great content - by content i mean Lucas lol :)
Only halfway through the video, but let me just comment early and say that this episode was GREAT. I read obsessively about food, and yet you managed to dredge up for my viewing pleasure dishes that are unfamiliar and that are thus very fascinating. The backstory and research on the food gave the video nice depth. Like many of the best videos on food, it was like a mini-vacation and totally free via CZcams.
I've eaten at Helena's and the food is so delicious. I would fly back to Hawaii just for Helena's awesome pipkaula.
Oh, Lucas and Eater team… after this Hawaii season: I must visit! So much really good food! Wow! :D
Do visit! There is so much amazing food their!
Eater there?
I went to eat here and it really is so delicious esp the pipi kaola(?) the short ribs...definitely a meal to remember for life
Lucas Sunbae, you're one of a kind 💕
This guy is just so natural as a host.
Wow, looks delicious! Great job Lucas!
I was there and took a picture with the Craig the owner. Very down to earth and nice person. Food is worth the drive out and the wait. Next time I’m out there I’m heading over as soon as the flight lands.
Eater been showing Kalihi some mad love 🙌🏻
I LOVE this place!!
Lucas and team, another amazing video!!
Man I love this place.
Lucas: oh i think thats enough food
Waitress: ok i'll bring you another dish
lol love it!
this was closed when my wife and i wanted to go. instead we went to onos and it was the best authentic food i ever had.
Love these videos on Oahu. So bummed these didn't come out this time last year before I went to Honolulu. I would have loved to hit a couple true authentic places in the 2 days we were there before going to the big Island for a week. We found a couple great local places there on the Kona coast all the way to the northern tip of the island if you need suggestions on the big Island.
Love that place !!!
Helena's is wonderful! If you ever get a chance to eat there try the fried butter fish collar IN GRAVY! It's super tasty... but, then again, everything there is incredibly tasty.
Love Helena's food. The Pipikaula and the beef watercress soup are my favorites.
Is it me or did that big guy behind Lucas look a lot like Samoa Joe?
been here, love it
Wish you would talk to the camera. You are a wonderful story teller ❤️
For anyone interested butter fish is also known as black cod. Its most common uses are in lau lau or the collar's are grilled or fried. On the island that I'm from we call them bat wings but I'm not sure if other islands do to.
The owner is a Jedi😊 Phenomenal guy...
that luau squid was to die for .-. ugh and the short rib...cant get over the poi though..i wasn't expecting it to be served cold
Hi lucas!enjoyed your video.keep it up!
I miss this so much :(
Okay these video videos need over 1 million viewers like now!
I didn't even start the video yet and I hit the like button lol 😋
Spot on review of Helenas! & hands down the best local/Hawaiian food on dis here isle ;)
& just gotta add, the 'dipping of ur pipikaula in tha poi' is the ONE & ONLY way that my daughter will eat poi. I personally don't get it, but what can I say - my daughter agrees w/ you wholeheartedly so I just can't post anything negative about it. Lol.
So, is it just salted before it's dried, or are the ribs marinaded during the process? Also, what kind of seasonings do they use on the ribs? Is it dark soy, light, Chinese or Japanese?
Helena's Restaurant, best Hawaiian Food Period, I remember going there when they were originally on King Street, no one comes close to the type of Hawaiian Food they serve.
Love your show! I wanna travel and taste with you!
Needed some corn tortillas.. could have made a few tacos. Cause everyone loves Hawaiian tacos!!
Would love to see Lucas on the Food Network...
Lucas needs his own channel!
I WAS JUST THERE
ʻAue!! Lucas you said Helena's Hawaiian Food just fine in the beginning of the video but chopped it up at the closing sentence
Trying some sweet from natural product and after some testy snack from fish it looks like yamy
Eater please come to South Africa!
hawaii is the best place on earth!
3:25 dude keeps leaning so much i thought he's gonna fall backwards
I've been told that butterfish is similar to, or is black cod.... regarding your meal - no 'lau lau'? that's my go-to hawaiian dish...
Next time you go there you should get the Opihi. Best thing there.
watch Strictly Dumpling's review on this place.
when the very first episode of Hawaii I was like their foods look meh and so boring, but then this episode how he tells story and describe the foods make me craving Hawaiian food bad. Excellent job!
i luv it
FYI you eat the fried butterfish whole. I also was never a big fan of poi but, drown it in chili water and eat it with some lomi lomi. game changer.
press like before watch the video when comes to my favorite channel
did he say....dry age? NICK SOLARES, GET DOWN HERE, WE NEED YOUR OBNOXIOUS BANTER AND BAD SUITS.
Can someone explain the prices on the menu for me. I'm reading it like it's overly cheap or overly expensive.
dont worry about the prices, Hawaii is expensive. just be happy to get a seat if you make it
$20 - $40 per person depending on what you get and its cash only.
1:09 Is that Bill Murray?
Yes.
They have a special "Bill Murray" table in the back for when he visits.
there was Adam Richman at 1:03
The quarter cut of onion on the side now that is Hawaiian style.
if eater replies to this comment I will watch the video and go sleep of not then all-nighter for me then currently 1:15 Australian time
Lots of requests for comments from us. We feel so popular!
Eater keep Lucas on board and you'll stay that way keep doing what you're doing guys loving the channel def one of the best food channels on CZcams
Lucas you look soo handsome in that white shirt !
I was eyeing you eyeing the ribs while eyeing the rice, since i'm a filipino
I LOVE Hawaiian Mac Salad.
the big secret is the mayonnaise... us locals will ONLY use Best Foods (called Hellmans east of the Missisippi) ==not the low fat, not the one with fancy smancy ones, but the regular Best Foods version !
"I love them pipis" 😂
Is that adam richman 1:05
I've never had authentic Hawaiian food before. Any restaurant in NY you guys can recommend? Can't go personally to Hawaii atm, but I'm sure there's a good one somewhere in NY. 😊 Would love to try some. 😊
LifewithAnnaBee - doubt you'll be able to find anything too authentic outside of Hawaiʻi. Maybe in NYC they'll have a local-style restaurant or one of those poke-esque restaurants that have become trendy recently, but in my experience those places don't tend to resemble the real deal very closely. You'd have better chances on the west coast or in Vegas where there are larger Hawaiian populations.
Lucas doesn't seem very happy in this episode
i love the fact that his grandma paid him back his wages.
Show the prices
Shenade O'Connor in the back
Bill Murray appearing nonchalantly in photos since the beginning of time.
Gotta try kitchen delight $1.75 breakfast plate
WAIT... did they put the fucking flan with THE FUCKING ONIONS ON THE SAME FUCKING PLATE!?
Damn Luke, it seems like youve been in Hawaii for a year....or we need more CONSISTENT content lol please drop more oftennn 😣😣😣
The way he said kalihi killed me. It's so painful to hear him pronounce Hawaiian words
3:23; Lucas finds his long lost brother.
lesson learned: never watch food shows while eating, you consume more than you need....>_
Oooh this was the same place on a man vs. food episode (Hawaii)
Zencann I
Lukas using his hands again to eat. And the fork is already on one hand xD
hi lucas
(eats raw onion)
"it's really nice"
2:28 Do they still eat dog?
Lucas almost slipped for a brief moment there 😅
legend says Eater replies
Who's Legend? Never met the guy.
