Food in Hawaii - POKE BOWLS and Seafood at Tanioka’s in Waipahu, Hawaii!

Tanioka’s is a local hole in the wall food spot in Waipahu, Hawaii, that I’d been wanting to eat at for many years. Finally, we made the drive out to Waipahu (about 30 mins or so from Honolulu), ordered some food, and ate it on the beach.
Tanioka’s Seafood and Catering - Waipahu, Hawaii - It’s a local Hawaii food spot, known for their takeaway bentos and lunchboxes, poke, and musubi. They also have a full cabinet of different deep fried things - like fish patties, tempura, and mochiko chicken. When you walk in, you immediately stand in line and pass through the line ordering whatever you see that looks good. One thing you can be certain of is that all their fish is extremely fresh. I was very excited, but it’s one of those places that you order a bunch of food, but you always feel like you missed ordering something important.
Here’s most of what I ordered:
Spam musubi / deluxe spam musubi
Fish patties
Futomaki
Poke bowl with fried belly
Spicy ahi bento
Poi mochi
Total price - $67.90
It’s not cheap at all, but it’s typical Hawaii prices.
After getting the bags of food, I wanted to go eat somewhere along the beach. Since I don’t typically get out to the West Coast of Oahu very often, we decided to drive out to Kahe Point. The views were spectacular and we walked around for a little while, but there wasn’t a good grassy area to sit, so we continued on to Ko Olina. Ko Olina is a resort and golf course area, which amazing calm lagoons and grassy areas, perfect to dig into a Hawaii beach feast from Tanioka’s!

it was a lot of rice though in comparison to traditional sushi
shamal chandra lots of maki type sushi you find here in Hawaii in stores or markets are usually big like that. It’s more of a party food or snack
japanese futomaki has more ingredients than rice haha. that was a ton of rice

I've never been abroad (i'm 35). never really had the opportunity as I was on my own from the age of 18, had to find a job and survive really. I'm going to Greece in the summer! Watching your videos has helped me understand what it might be like, what food to look out for and i'm really excited! Thank you Mark for creating awesome videos! I'll be watching more of your videos to get some ideas for the next holiday in 2019! All the best

Hi there. Never tried poke? Don't fret. Poke is also a sushi bowl. 😊Yup. So, depending on were you live, find a great sushi restaurant and have them prepare one for you or better yet, go to a Fresh Market/Whole Foods, they have real sushi chef to come to their stores and make the take home sushi and the sushi bowls! Yummy. At my local Kroger- I buy freshly made sushi and the poke bowls there. And yes, they too have an onsite sushi chef. Lucky me. Lol. So, happy hunting friend and enjoy your find, poke is delicious🤗

LOL, it's like the latest trend. There are poke places opening up on every corner in CA. I worry that they seas will run out of tuna at this rate.
poke restaurants are exploding in the main land. its not the same (usually lots of fillers), but if you live in or near a major US city you will be able to find one.
I love the thing you do when you taste something great. You kind of close your eyes, lean a little and smile. It's like you're enjoying the food so much you loose yourself in the moment!

I used to get aku poki with ogo when I was 21 at Tanioka's I'm now 62 and so very glad that they are still there . I wish we had a Tanioka's in Seattle.

I love that Ying is such a devoted mother. Hawaii is my dream destination. I have tried Poke bowls with all the toppings. It is beyond delicious.
Poke Bowls normally dont have toppings. It's just the poke you have with rice. If it has toppings it's not a poke bowl.
Mainland "poke" is so different from REAL HAWAIIAN POKE. Those toppings they put in the mainland is just sooooo wrong.
Poke is the bomb. So irresistible!

I went to Hawaii two years ago and went here. The way you describe the poke is EXACTLY how i felt when I had it. The rice was amazing and the fish was perfect. Can't wait to go back again someday
