My lovebird Linus likes to ask for her door open, then go sit in her favourite spot in her cage and go on as if nothing happened. Then a few mins later she comes out very sneaky as if she’ll get into trouble for coming out like I didn’t know the door was open. She is odd.

I worked a temp job in an office about 6 years ago and one of the people who worked there had an African Grey. He brought her into the office one day and had a stand set up and everything, feet away from me. I was fascinated by her! I have this laugh that makes a lot of people poke fun at me and that day I was laughing at something the bird said, then without being prompted, she started laughing at me! It was the funniest thing ever.

I've had Sailor, a 20 year old CAG for about 3 months now, and he absolutely continues to surprise me.
He's still a bit wary at home so step up training is slow going - he much prefers to play in his cage than come out of the cage, so I let him make that choice.
But you are totally right about them picking up on things. He knows how to call the cats over now, he makes all the wild bird sounds in the mornings while the windows are open. He says "whut?" when we go to his cage (his favorite word too, hell say it five times in a row in different ways lol) He coughs when my mom's about to. He's figured out the tapping sound the spoon makes in the pot when we are cooking. He knows when the garbage truck is coming and does the engine sounds.
He makes fart sounds to amuse himself, and then laughs about it. He's picked up a few of my whistles and phrases. Once we heard him say "whoop de Doo" sarcastically and I realized it was something * was saying to mom a lot haha. He's also picked up things from CZcams that he decided HE likes. Like mewling kittens. He LOVES the kitten sounds!
He's definitely not an affectionate bird, he doesn't really want scratches, but when we are doing our own things, and he makes all these sounds and says phrases we say, I know he is happy, and it is great company for me. I love my little grumpy man.

Emily Chambers - That would be amazing, only, I live on a small island in the UK and there’s only one rescue facility which is mostly empty but for cats and dogs. I suppose it’s a good thing because we really love our animals here and have no strays but also means I have to rely on you tube for my fix of any animals that aren’t cats and dogs (I used to breed rare Manx cats and currently have 2 dogs). listen my bird is a 30 years old african grey and still learns new things to mimic, he’s just his own guy and he decides what he wants to mimic. it could be a beep he heard once and decided it’s a fun sound, and it could be a word or a word or a chatter. especially if they have a good stimulating environment, that makes them do stuff they never done before (like new foraging tactics, new tricks, an environment with a good flow.).

One of my brother in laws birds will whistle back and forth with my almost 2 year old, none of the birds really talk besides the occasional pretty bird, their grey doesnt speak at all and was caged for 10 years with an elderly lady who took good care of her but didnt have the energy to interact. The noise she heard the most was the battery low for the fire alarm. It's been a year and that's still one of the only noises she makes. There working with her now to get her more interactive, she used to be very aggressive if you came within a few feet of the cage unless you had a treat. Now shell get on their shoulder and snuggle her head if she wants pets. But will bite if she didnt specifically ask, sometimes even if she did. Crazy smart birds. All they need is some love and attention

Always interested in what's going on with you marlene. You doing what you do in these vidios without a doubt saves many birds from being bought for ALL THE WRONG REASONS, as 1 of your fans mentions after listening to you she would now think getting that bird was really NOT FOR HER. That's huge marlene. And that's only the 1 I noticed, as I'm sure there are thousands more over the years that have been saved from having to be Re-Homed or worse. So you my dear DO MAKE ALL THE DIFFERANCE in the world. So if any FANS out there like me dont forget those thumbs up after seeing one of her educational yet funny as heck vidios because even I forget to hit that 👍👍👍 after watching. Hey marlene, thx so much for wearing your, and MY MOST FAVORITE OF YOUR MURCH, The Black hoodie with gangster vinnie on it. I'm still really sad about birdtricks, jamie and David's death of one of their rose breasted cockatoos and it's so awful. Anyway I'm seriously going to check into how to purchase that particular hoodie as well as 1 of your Boxes. Have a great rest of your day. Number 1 fan Katie.🤗❤🧡💋.

I am very excited! We are bringing him/her home next spring! I know they are a HUGE responsibility and life long commitment. I am 37 with no children or plans for kids. No one should ever get one of these brilliant and sensitive creatures unless they REALLY do their research and planning.

My neighbor has a African Grey named Bruiser. I really want a bird so they let me go inside and see him. He is a rescue bird so he pluck and is afraid of kids because at his last home kids would poke him through the bars of the cage. When I went so see him he started swinging upside down and saying “weeeeee” and he would bark and say hello. A few months ago she fell and cracked his beak. He wouldn’t let the vets touch him so the but him under anesthesia. He’s good now and stopped plucking his flight feathers. And he’s 21. I love your videos and I’ve learned a lot about birds from you. I really want a cockatiel but my dad won’t let me. My mom dosnt really care if I have one and would enjoy it. Anyway hope you had a good day❤️

    • @marieparsons9908
      @marieparsons9908 Před 4 lety +2

I think you're doing great. You found a way to spend time with a bird so that you can learn about them. It also sounds like you can really help Bruiser by helping him get over his fear of kids. If you keep learning about birds, maybe they will let you take care of Bruiser when they go on vacation. Maybe you can spend time with other birds in a pet store or at a bird rescue.
I agree with your dad. You should wait until you're out of college to get your own bird. Your life is going to change so much in the next years. It wouldn't be fair to your bird.

I got a 3 year old African Grey about 2 mos ago & compared to my other Parrots he is really layed back. He's rarely caged & sits on his stand all day chewing toys & making different sounds with a few words mixed in there. He's not cuddly which is fine; he will step up on my down-turned hand if he flys to the floor but otherwise he's been slow to warm to me, that's ok too. 🥰🌸🍀

Not related to the video but: a few days ago I got my first parrot (a linnie) and getting a second linnie in 2 weeks and I'm so happy! Your channel is a big reason I decided to get one, and, especially why I know how to take good care of them. Of course only first hand practice will make me really good, but I'm glad I was able to learn so much beforehand. I've had my linnie for 3 days now and he's already eating from my hand and seems super content in general.

I wanted to share my bird "Frito's" story with you. I've always wanted and African Grey but they were out of my price range. After much research I decided on a Quaker. I got Frito at 4 months from someone who purchased him as a pet for their 4 year old son. I've had him going on 3 years. I work from home so he is always with me pretty much 24/7. He has all the same traits and intelligence of an African Grey. He has a vocabulary of over 200 words and phrases plus sounds such as doors creaking, dogs barking, etc... He still learns new words regularly. I think because they are illegal in alot of states (I live in Arizona), they are overlooked as one of the most intelligent species. Since I've never own a Grey, I cannot compare them, but just from general knowledge, I would rank them right up there with the Grey. Also I have a Lovebird that's about 6 months old that has learned about 5 phrases so far from Frito which is pretty good for a lovebird, although his speech is not as clear. Thankyou for all your videos and everything you do for birds!

I think you've got your 5 points spot-on for an African Grey lover :).
I got my 18 year old CAG called Shrek when he (or she? - can't be bothered to have Shrek sexed, as that's just too invasive) was just a 2 week old chick that the parrot parents booted out of the nest, and hand-raised him.
Like you mentioned, Greys are not for everyone - they take a lot of attention - more so than I've found for a multitude of other pets I've had over the past 40+ years.
It's important to learn to understand them, and most of all respect their emotions and needs. All pets need, and should be treated to understanding and respect. It's just that Greys do seem to need to be treated more like humans than most other pets.
Keep up the good work :)

Got to say that when I got my sun conure he was only a few weeks old and well he was constantly with me I was constantly petting him and so he was wanting to play with toys in the beginning but then he wanted me instead so yeah I did make that mistake. Now he's dependent on me too for entertainment and if I walk away for just a few seconds he squawks. But I love him anyway and he knows it. 🐦✨💚

Hey Marlene, my name is Rodney and the idea of getting a bird has fascinated me for years now but I knew that going feet 1st into being a bird owner without any education about what it means to properly take care of a bird is a terrible idea, as with any pet. I'm so glad that I found your channel. Since I've started watching you I've learned so much and you've proven that I was right in learning more before I even chose what kind of bird to get. Unfortunately, the nearest bird rescue/sanctuary is in Kansas City Missouri, about a 3-5 hour drive from where I live, so having the hands on experience before I decide which kind is more likely to be comfortable with my living situation and sort of preforming a good bond before transferring the bird to a new companion with a bird is impractical for me. I really hope that more people find channels like yours and look to educate themselves before living with a bird. I look forward to learning more about birds with you and that you keep up the good work. God bless you!

I really hope that you continue this series in particular and give it it's own playlist because I'm serious about learning as much as I can about properly starting out with a rescue/new bird to get them acquainted with me and their new living area with the do's and don'ts. I was/am seriously considering a Budgie for my 1st bird but it'll depend on what the shelter/rescue center has available when I take the plunge. I may end up with a pair of birds to start out with because, with as much as I've learned from your channel, I refuse to separate a bonded pair. That's almost as mean as caging them in my opinion.

One of our greys does pluck. I've been working on helping him be assured. I'd love to hear about how to increase communication with greys. We have 2, and there's been some unique challenges for us. Our grey Bingo is quite bonded to me, his previous owner got dementia and had to give him up. He bonded to me and calls me her name now.
We adopted our second, Charlie, nearly a year ago. He requires some special care He became disabled due to a previous owner who let him play with their dog, his leg got bit and unfortunately healed at a 90 angle. He wasn't eligible for the surgery anymore when I adopted him. Anyway, he is still happy bird but he plucks. We've had some issues with our first bird becoming jealous of the new one, and definitely the time and attention being split the two birds can be a challenge. You commented in your video about routine with African greys. Do you have a course about this to be purchased? I would love to learn how to use routine and self-reliance to help them both, and myself as well 😊👍
    Thank you so much!!! ❤️❤️❤️

My favorite is the Hyacinth Macaw
Reason to get a Hyacinth macaw
They are the largest flying parrot
Because of their amazing blue colour as blue is my favorite colour
They are intelligent like African grey parrots .
My favorite bird is Hyacinth macaw, scarlet macaw and green wing macaw
They are intelligent like African grey parrots but not too much intelligent
Although it is louder but we can stop them from screaming
I have decided to get two Hyacinth macaw, a Scarlet macaw and a green wing macaw soon

I have wanted a African Grey for so long and this has solidified the love for them. Sadly I can’t get one since I have a cockatiel and I was told that if you get a bird that’s another special to make sure they are if similar size just in case something goes wrong.
