Their lifespan is something not to take lightly. I owned parrots since I was in my twenties - all rescued. I finally bought a baby African Grey baby around that time. She is now 30 years old and my only parrot. As I prepare for retirement, she makes it extremely difficult for me to travel. I cannot get rid of her, but she does cramp my current lifestyle. Another thing to remember is that parrots are expensive and messy to keep. In short -- they are a huge responsibility for the rest of your life.

Getting a bird (especially a parrot) if you have a mental illness such as depression, anxiety, stress etc. is not the best idea either. I'm suffering from severe depression and anxiety. (tho I'm feeling much better now) Well, In the beginning, it was SOOO difficult to get along with my parrot, because whenever he bit me or flew away I would get SO sad. I constantly felt like I was the problem and that I was doing everything wrong. It's not that I blamed the bird, I blamed myself, which made me want to give up everything. Yet, here I am, bird sitting right next to me. Of course, a bird can be a GREAT therapy animal. Kiwi has brought me SO much joy and happiness, but holy crap has he brought me A TON of trouble too.

I have a really good example of what Marlene is describing at number 9. My mom, when visiting for like idk the 10th time ever since I got my cockatiel, accidentally knocked over Hamilton's playground with her bag while he was sitting on it. Scared him shitless and he flew straight to me. And the next MANY TIMES she came to visit, he stayed away from her. Took her a long time to regain his trust, and her having had many animals in her home in her life, same as me, didn't understand why he continued to be so wary of her. And I had to explain that birds take a long time to trust someone and if you break that trust, it's gonna take even longer to regain it. He was my first bird, so I had researched a lot about this, but my mom of course hadn't so she didn't know. She's still in awe sometimes of how smart he is.
Eventually he forgave her and now steps up on her hand and he likes to chill on her head. But it took a longass time, and she never made the same mistake again x'D

I think my caique is going through something similar. He loved my dad when we got him, cuddled him and all that- and then my dad had to go to hospital for a few days and when he returned my bird just wasn't the same around him. He now bites him to the point of bleeding, yelling at him and just generally being mean. Idk how to get him to like my dad again because he cant even be in the same room or a room across from him without him flying over to my dad and attacking him.

I love it when she comes out with these videos of why some people should not own parrots. Yes they are awesome animals, but they are indeed a lot of work and they live a LONG time. I only have three at my house, 20-year-old cockatiel and 20-year-old lovebird I got when I was 4, and then a Princess of Wales in a large indoor acrylic aviary type cage. I just spent 2 hours yesterday preparing LOADS of their fresh chop of expensive organic vegetables to go in the freezer. But the main thing is I enjoy doing it and spending too much money on them for food and toys. My husband is absolutely not a bird person and thinks I'm insane for how much I put into them. But hey, love birds and cockatiels do not typically have a long lifespan above 20 years in captivity, so I know I'm doing something right :D

@@vecnq._.cuteeeeee8232 If you do not feel ready, then there is no rush to get a bird. It all has to do with where you are in your life, do you have time to spend with your bird, do you have the financial stability to sustain and help your bird thrive, and is everyone else in your household willing to pick up any slack? This is one important aspect I love about the dynamic between Marlene and George. I understand them, how they think, act, etc. I had dogs as a kid and it was just too much for me. They need to be trained, groomed, bathed, given lots of attention, walked..ugh. I had a fish once. Nope. Nope. Nope. Cleaning the aquarium.. No. Had a hermit crab. Nope. Nope. Nope. @@MARLENEMCCOHEN that's why I was a little concerned when you got your gecko and chameleon. Lizards need such specific care and can be difficult to keep alive. I don't think they are too different from birds though via their sensitivity to their environment. So many lizard are abused because people don't understand their care.

For me I love the challenge of them. Once you've won your birds love and trust and get them to learn new things, its really rewarding. Dogs and cats are kind of boring for me. I also like how they can be found in the wild and aren't genetically modified, it sort of brings the vibe of where they are from to your house.

Most needed video ever! Byrd chose me in 2002. I was hamburger, fries, and diet coke. I did loads of research (and continue to this day) but did not understand the importance of constant fresh food. I traveled for work and she went with me everywhere. She is my companion and Byrd shares meals. I was not offering her a healthy variety. I did buy some of the mixes you cook up, but as you said, since it was not my preference it was a lot of trouble and I did not take to it. Now, I am no soda, more plant-based, organic, fresh fruits and veggies. We are healthier. She is making me a better person.

I've always loved birds so much. And actually always wanted an African grey or blue and gold macaw. After many years I actually realised through research that those parrots are not for me or my lifestyle. I live in an apartment and already have dog and cats. After so much research I ended up getting a green cheek conure. I am SO happy I choose this bird. Also that I waited for the right bird. I had met so many babies and did not feel the instant connection I felt with this boy. He's perfect for me. He's quiet unless he wants something. And he loves to shower with me. I get him a new toy and rearrange his cage each month. My only problem is he isn't afraid of the cats. He comes down to the floor and goes towards them . Lol luckily they are afraid of him since he bit one on the nose haha. Always remove him as soon as he's down. His favorite is sweet potatoes and grapes. But he eats a variety of other stuff too. :) Love my pip. Best pet I've ever owned. So much more intelligent and bonded fhan my cats or dog.

Thank you so much for all of the talk about kids owning birds!!! I want to add college students to your list. Because I was the dumb college student who (a few months before graduation) considered myself "settled" enough to get a bird. I thought I had a plan for post-graduation. Well, next thing you know, I got an internship that required me to move, and my parents didn't want to keep my bird. My poor cockatiel had to be rehomed. It was a really sad situation for this sweet bird... I'm also embarrassed to add the cockatiel I got in 8th grade and later rehomed because I didn't have time for it...
I am so passionate about not getting birds when you are a child/very young adult. It really saddens me when I see posts on Parrot Station from kids/college kids asking what type of bird they should get. Everyone thinks they have their life figured out at that age, but they don't. When you're young, you don't know what path you're going to take in life. It's an exciting time, but it's not right for a parrot. You shouldn't hold back on your own life goals for a bird's sake, nor should your bird be neglected because you got new life goals. It's much better to wait until you are an adult to get a bird. Things change too when you're an adult sometimes, but it's much less likely than when you're young.
I am now the proud owner of a green cheek and a cockatiel, but I'm 25, married, and have a stable job. I should have waited until now before I got those other 2 birds from my childhood/college life.

I completely agree, that's why I mentioned that the family has to be on board because if the family is in love with the bird then at least whem the are life changes for the kid, the family can step in as they do with the family dog. If family isn't on board and it's a sole Decision similar to right out of college, then that's a very difficult situation to be in, you're absolutely right!

I will be training not only dogs, but cats, birds, pigs, and possibly other exotics as well! I’ve been studying up on training other animals for a long time as well now, so thanks for this video! • @joannanderson2500
      @joannanderson2500 Před rokem

Parrots are NOTHING like dogs! Dogs are predators, and parrots are prey animals. Birds are a completely different animal training-wise than dogs. Parrots bite, but if you train them the same way as a dog that bites, you will lose the parrot's trust, as they do NOT understand punishment as dogs are biting due to fear or dominance, mostly dominance if they are treated the right way. Dominance doesn't work with birds, their social hierarchies are completely different than dogs or wolves who are actually very dominant and aggressive with each other.

The previous owner used to feed him a spicy chicken kebab as a “treat” he’s been with us just over a week now, he has fresh fruit at hand whenever he feels like it, he eats an amazingly balanced diet now, his eyes have gotten so much brighter, he even climbs on my shoulder! Thank you so much for your honesty. I agree with all of your reasons. I personally don’t recommend parrots for anyone. They are so much work. But if you are willing to do all it takes, and I’m talking about giving up your hole life to care for your bird, they are the most wonderful companions that exists on earth. My amazon even senses when I’m down and she will stay close to me for the day. Other days she’s a real troublemaker. But you really have to love them Because if not they will drive you crazy with the biting and screaming and destroying everything you love.
Being a parrot owner really is not for everybody. It takes a special kinda person. Someone who don’t mind getting bite, who like noise and someone who have the money to effort all the toys they need to destroy. And of course someone who care about there diet a lot and training. I had no clue the amount of care a parrot needs...so whn some1 i knew came home with a baby bird..i bought it...i was so unprepared and then a month later my dad comes home with another parrot...and then he leaves to Angola for a whole three months and whn he came back the parrot tht he bought was so inlove with me tht he ddnr care about my dad anymore so automatically i had two parrots totally obsessed with me and i have work and other stuff. ..but i make it work...as soon as i get home i spend time with them...we cook dinner...we eat together...i include them...i alrdy have them now...i couldnt just give them away u knw...so i jst made it work...i still make it work

Hi Marlene, so I’m new to the bird world and this video is flipping fantastic! I’ve been an animal lover all my life and had all sorts of animals from horses to hamsters and everything in between.
Although growing up we had a couple of caged Budgie as a kid I didn’t really have much to do with them. Now at 51 years I have recently bought a Budgie who is out of his cage all day long. Seeing how sweet funny and engaging he is I’m now obsessed with birds. As I scroll on bird preloved sites in the UK, I’m shocked at how many birds are changing homes for all the reasons that you’ve listed, how stressful that must be for them and so unfair.......it’s so heart breaking!
This video is soooooooo important it should be compulsory for people to watch before they get a bird 👍🏽😊 I love how understanding you are with how people tick, yet still give what the reality is for owning a bird.
Your videos are fantastic, thank you so much.

i love when you make these types of videos! it's so so super important we educate newcomers and people who are unfamiliar with birds on matters like these - there are just too many people out there that have birds who REALLY shouldn't. it's my hope to prevent situations like these and preventing birds from going through stress and abuse because they went to a home that wasn't a good fit for them. I'm sure this video will help people reconsider their decision to get a bird.

Amanda Warszycki start sending her links to videos of how to care for birds and what to expect. She may be more open to advice from people she doesnt know, no offense to you,but thats human nature, tho sad it may be. I hope this helps.

    Parrot tip Tuesday!!!
What is beautiful about birds is that they keep changing and surprise you day by day with new things. I worked very hard for my budgie to love me. It was not hand tamed or handfed, so it was quite the adventure to get him to not fear me and specially to come to love me. After several months he started wanting to play with me and toys and after two years he started to play with my hands which is the thing he feared the most, hands. And he keeps changing and showing new colors and that’s honestly thrilling. But yes, he’s probably the living being I’ve put more effort in my life in making he love me back lol

Same! I’m 12, and I have a cockatiel named Ari. My parents told me to spend a lot of time researching and researching. I’m assuming I read about 7 hours a day of articles about cockatiels. It was worth it ✨

Same, but i have 4 lovebirds, and i did so much research the day my mom got them but first we had 2 and 1 month later we got 2 more lovebirds, and im mostly the one who takes care of them like change their food water and give them fruits veggies, and yeah and what iv seen is the price range for their set up can go up to 500$! But luckily those cages that are like 50-300$ is 3-9$ in my country, iv got a 30$ cage for 7$

Im an 11 year old girl, who already planned out my life "pretty well". I've done tons of research on many different bird species, and im currently stuck between a conure or a severe macaw. I may get a bird when i move away from home (or maybe a bit earlier)
I googled alot of cons of having a bird, and alot of them aren't the biggest struggle (Like loud noices, messy birds, away from home etc.)Thanks for good content videos Marlene👍

Commitment is no joke. I am in college and have a parrot. I literally take all online classes just so i can still give undivided attention to my bird. I agree with Marlene a lot, if you are going to college and may move away, a bird might not be the greatest choice. Unless u are willing to prioritize your bird above all else it wont work. I live with my parents and take all online classes so I am always with my baby. I made this decision because when she accidentally swallowed a piece of her toy last year I had to skip my classes to take her to the emergency avian vet. U really need to think about how much you want to commit. These guys live a very long time

Hello. Love your channel. Used to live in So. Cali. I am a native in fact. I have been living in Israel for eight years now.. I could never have so many pets but I love observing you and your interactions with your parrots. Here, you'd have to be very affluent indeed to have so many parrots and to care for their diatery needs the way you suggest.
